Whether you are Catholic or not, you have to recognize that the Vatican is basically the most important place in the West in terms of art and symbolism, and nothing about the character's design is random.
The shell is a symbol of Christian pilgrims from the 12th century. Its origin is strictly historical and is related to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which was a cathedral that many people from around the world visited on foot, as pilgrims.
The shell was sold by the merchants of Compostela and was sewn into clothes and hats.
When the pilgrims, after a tiring journey, saw the shell (that is, had the shell in their eyes), it meant that they had reached the destination of their pilgrimage.
This detail in the character is simply perfect!
