@AdBlock plus Nothing illegal about buying a BMP, although you might have to jump through some hoops and a tax stamp or two to get one with the autocannon still installed. But still very doable. Tanks and other AFVs are very much legal to buy in the US and they go up for auction all of the time.

TBH if this were my passion, it'd be more about the building of international connections any way I could - the internet is a wonderful thing, as are conventions/trade shows - and being willing to make this my 'money-hobby' for lack of a better term. For example, I built and continuously upgrade a gaming computer, which has easily cost me five thousand dollars over the past seven years. If instead I did not care so much about this, I could easily afford to do this import process to acquire some C&R weapon I found out about. As with most non-trivially expensive things, it just all depends on how much of your expendable income you are willing to dedicate to any given passion project.

Seller in Australia (with copy of my Import form, and his Export form) shipped it UPS. It was stopped by Customs, stamped "Inspected", and delivered to my door by UPS (I was an FFL then). The rifle cost me $180 USD ( $300 AUD at the time), and $100 for shipping.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm trying to import a VZ 58 and 7.5FK BRNO PSD from the Czech Republic that I plan on buying when I go on my vacation there. There's a gun UA-camr from there who talks about and I've been talking to him about it. He says they're very permissive and I found a consulate website that says they literally honor our state permits to carry by paying a $20 fee and filing a paper to have them issue me a Czech one. You've gave me a bunch of stuff and let me know things I didn't know about on the US end and logistics end that I can use to get my task accomplished. Especially the fact that a normal FFL can pay for the permit specifically for occasional guns a customer wants to import. The hardest problem is getting the serial numbers ahead of time so I'm going to see if I can find a company that would store the gun for me while I wait for the process to complete since clearly I'd only get the number once I'm there to make the purchase.

My only experience with importation happened about 16 years ago. A customer who had moved from Canada wanted to import his own rifles. The group was a mixture of sporting and mil-surp. Some of the items were approved by ATF and some were rejected. All the rejects were mil-surp, but at least one of the approved rifles was mil- surp, so that criterion alone was not controlling.
Eventually, the approved items were shipped to LAX. My boss went there to claim them. Customs would not release them to him. He explained the situation to the supervisor and showed the ATF approval documentation. We're not ATF, the supervisor said, we're Customs. We don't care what ATF says.
He drove back empty-handed and got in contact with ATF, who replied, essentially, we're ATF; we can't control what Customs does.
So he embarked on a phone back-and-forth with bureaucrats at both Customs and ATF until he climbed the ladder to the point that he got decision makers from both agencies who could mutually approve the deal. So then he went back to LAX and was able to get the rifles released.
The upshot was that the importation was possible, but it was too much of a hassle to be worth repeating. When I opened my own gun store, I had a customer or two ask me to facilitate an importation, but I declined, given the memory of the previous one.

Not all semi-autos meet the features list for the '89 ban. I just read a 1989 NY Times article that specified by name that the Valmet Hunter (AK variant without pistol grip supplied with 9rd mags) was not covered by the import ban. Also many rimfire rifles. Your STG-58 probably won't qualify for import. But some semi-auto hunting rifles probably would, if they're not covered by other import bans.

So not from Russia and need to be civilian owned etc.
I have not asked alphabet gang about this and they tend to have different info anyway sometimes depending on an agent, day or if moon is in Uranus etc.

That said, what a freaking hassle to go through just to spend your own money on an item and bring it to your door! Sheesh! We may have, overall, in most places, the best gun laws in the world, but some things really need to be eased up. I can see careful overseeing of large importation companies to ensure each gov't gets their due [eye-roll] but for we common folk, I don't think .gov is gonna miss any three martini lunches if they ease back on the fees and restrictions. --- Okay, off me soap box. :)
