  • This one was bought as a "Refurbished" unit for big dollars.
    Not only was it improperly repaired but one of the most common faults was completely missed.

    One thing to keep in mind, finding these units for $25 to $50 is one thing. Having the equipment, tools, supplies, parts and ability to get them working is another. If someone has all of that, it adds value to the unit. How much? It’s up to the buyer. And if a buyer is willing to pay extra for the confidence that the unit is in top condition, that doesn’t make them ignorant. It just means they value the effort put into it. If you’re a repair technician, your time (and the equipment, tools and supplies you’ve invested in) has value. Just like a mechanic, plumber, electrician or painter.

      Yes but they are still not worth 600.00 for a very old machine. A couple hundred is fair and the ones I have picked up have had very little if anything wrong with them.
      If you look around they are out there and they are not expensive. Just saying, I have never paid more than 25.00 for them. I picked up a JVC HRS9911 for 20.00 a Samsung SV5000 multi system converting machine for 25, SVO2000 for 25, and all 3 of these were functional. Could I sell them for great profit, sure I could because people that have no idea what these are worth will pay the price. Just saying that they are available for cheap and I didn't look hard, just scanned Craigslist, Facebook and the local thrift stores. The thrift stores are cranking up their prices these days however.

    Thank you! I used to change out that capstan bearing back when you could easily get them . . Just obtained a beautiful R1000 to rebuild for old time's sake - already did the gear, but it had the scrape noise. I do not know why I never thought to give them a little bend - fixed it, silent operation now. You're awesome! I have had Doc Sony recap several Hi8 Sony camcorders for me, no problems, but noone is perfect. I enjoy your videos, thanks again!

      I did this for a living for over 20 years. When in a high pressure shop to perform you get to be good and fast. I am glad however that I don't do this for a living anymore. now it's more to try to save the old equipment when possible. Not all of it though can be saved because there are machines that are just worn out or you can't get parts for.

SP tapes would play fine. i could have gotten the part about 15yrs ago from studio sound electronics but i don't think i wanted to put any more money into it. i did replace the white gear in it it was broken because of the frozen p6 guide.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому +1

      The frozen p6 guide was a common fault, as was the the capstan bearing housing and the left threading gear. Anyone that claims that they work on Sony vcrs would know these faults and make corrective actions to prevent the bearing from sticking.

    It would be a pain to do but I would have been tempted to have first secured a small length of insulation over the crack-line before wiring over it. This would have added some strain relief.
    When I repaired a similar problem years ago it reduced the chances of the copper trace lifting. Any thoughts?

    • @12voltvids

      Never had that issue of trace lifting. 700'F is the temperature I use on my iron. Fixed these type of hairline fractures many times and have never had an issue. The back of the board was reinforced with epoxy and the top side had a conformal coating of flex seal rubber sealant put on it after the camera was turned off before reassembly.

I’m getting continuity throughout the circuits of the main power board, capacitors tested good, tightened ground screws, checked ribbon cable connections. Yet, it still cycles on and off, trying to determine what I’m missing here to resolve the issue. Also, changed power cords and tried different outlets. No signs of bulging or leaking on caps.

      Have you unplugged the leds and see if it boots up? If so could be a shorted led strip shutting it down. you won't have a picture obviously with the LEDs unplugged but if the set boots up and you've got sound you should be able to do the flashlight test by shining a flashlight at the screen and see an image if so then you know it's a backlight problem if not it could be a problem on the main board itself

      @@azshaw123 Magenta is hard to record on NTSC analog tape no matter what the format. All the color under machines have trouble with magenta as it is both full red and blue components at maximum amplitude. Just the way the signal is recorded it becomes noisy. PAL doesn't have this issue as the color is inverted 180" every line so the noise cancels itself out. That was one of the limitations of NTSC but a necessary one as the goal was to maintain compatibility with the millions of existing black and white televisions already in use. Something that wasn't a problem in PAL countries as they moved to different frequencies for color broadcasts and ran a simulcast for old B/W tv viewers for a few years and then turned the 405 line system off. Magenta was not a problem once the move was made to digital recording.

      @12voltvids  Рік тому +3

      I shoot in 1080p60. I do have 4k cameras at much better quality then any GoPro. You just tuned in before UA-cam finished processing. I could have shot it in 4k and uploaded it and it would have looked exactly the same thing until you waited for UA-cam to finish processing. There's a reason I don't shoot in 4k and the reason for that is editing time. This video renders out in pretty much the same amount of time as it takes for it to run so once I've added a video in 60 frame 1080p if it's a 30 minute video it takes about 30 minutes to render out and then I can upload. Shoot the same video in 4k and I'm waiting 6 to 7 hours of the computer grinding away to turn on a huge file which the Zen going to take even longer to upload with very little gain because so few people would actually watch in 4k. For example the house move video that I did which took about 8 hours to render I look at the stats about 1% of viewers have watched it in 4k the rest watch it in 1080p so what's the point just to prove that I can do it in 4k?

    • @RadOo
      @RadOo Рік тому +3

      In my opinion 1440p is quite common and great middle of the road between 4k and FHD. I actually watch at 1440p quite often. But I think 1080p60 is enough for most people, it is hard to settle on something.

      @@mraaron1584 For sure as there are always people that over pay. The problem with ebay is the money laundering that has been going on for decades. Shady people use it to transfer funds around and wash ill gained cash. I saw a documentary a few years ago that showed how it was done. Associate A needs to clean a few grand. He gets associete B to list something (that he probably doesn't own) on ebay and the bids start rolling in. At the last few seconds associate A makes a huge big to win the auction. Deposits some cash to fill his paypal account and then pays for fake product with his associate. The paypal/ebay fees are just a cost of doing business. Many times an empty box was even shipped to provide a paper trail so it looks like a legit business transaction. This happens over and over associates buy and sell fake products for much higher than this item would normally go for. Usually it is vintage and antiques. For the longest time they were getting away with it, bit now they are clamping down because taxes are now collected on paypal transactions over 600 a year to sellers. The trickle down effect it that it drives up the selling prices of legitimate items listed because people look at the histor of the fake sales and believe that this is the real going price. People get caught up in the bidding war and over pay because they "really want it". If people stopped paying these ridicules prices this stuff would drop back to where it belongs quickly. As I mentioned I bought one for 25.00 about 3 weeks ago. They are out these dirt cheap if you look around.
