I refer to standing order six, in chapter seventeen of book twelve of the rules and regulations of Parliament, subsection seventy three, paragraph thirty four, which states that the Speaker of the House is not to show clear bias to one party or another.

We need truly independent speakers of parliament, regardless of which party/parties are in government. Be them an independent MP or a totally seperately elected independent individual (as in voted for by the public but who isn't aligned with any political party and who isn't representing a given electorate) the system needs to change otherwise MPs who are either unduly equipped for the role OR are biased in their actions as speaker will continue to be elected time and time again.
This change is sorely needed, both for the benefit of parliamentary processes and debates (within and outside of parliament, including on how parliament and its members are viewed by the general public), the parliamentarians presided over by the speaker as well as benefiting whoever are the parliamentarians who are selected by a parliament (namely by the sitting government of the day) as it would better allow them to directly advocate for their own electorate as well as the wider population (rather than being constrained by the limits placed on whicher member of parliament is elected to the speaker, which additionally also prevents that member from attending things such as party room meetings).
Although I sadly can't foresee this happening in Australia (or in any other democratic governments around the world that I can think of) it would greatly benefit both Federal and State/Territory parliaments, the public and the direct members involved.

@@psych0536 agreed that it's a tricky one, but something better than the current system is needed as not only are there partisan issues with a speaker coming from one of the major parties (including any parties that are within a coalition or as part of a minority government) but also a strong tendency not to have enough time granted to the the questions/wants of the backbenchers as occurs in a few other democratic countries.
It's a tricky one all around.

This is a high-quality laughing stock. The Speaker of the house should be removed from their party status automatically after they are elected as a speaker.

      Campaign of noise & interjection?
More like a campaign of the speaker abusing 94a.

      Alice Noonan
You can't change history, it was just a flow of hypocrisy since Abbott became PM & the government relied on Bronwyn's bias to silence the opposition & push through the massive cuts & new taxes.
It was the same with the HRC.
The only thing they didn't count on was the strong response from their own electorate, that got them all kicked out of their respective roles when the lies became obvious.
Abbott only used a fake budget as a cover for the real one when he told all those pre-election lies.
