Cost Of A Firewood Processor

  • Got to take a look at a firewood processor in person. Will from the weekend homestead rented a Dyna sc-14 firewood processor. A machine that can process 2 cords an hour.
    We ran into some issues with eh oiler on the machine so never got to see it run at its peak performance but brought to light what one of these machines would cost to rent. I am sure you could get creative and find a way for the machine to pay for itself. Just processing a couple extra cords would pay for the weekend rental.

    About Life In Farmland: Our family strives to be as self-sufficient as we can be. We grow a lot of food in the garden, raise or hunt for our meat, cut and use firewood to heat our house in the cold Minnesota winters. We want to know where our food comes from, what goes into it. We strive to live a slower and sustainable lifestyle with family being our first priority. On this channel, you will find a lot of how-tos, shared experiences, recipes, and videos of things we are trying and learning more about.

    Thanks for sharing! I always appreciate when you are cutting your firewood by hand. I come from a logging family/community, so have seen my Grandfather cut by hand to the days of folks using big equipment. I realize that as a business they can cut way more wood, but the other end of that is that also have to work way more hours in order to pay for all of that equipment. So the end result is something that I guess each person makes a decision on. Always love watching videos, thanks for sharing!

    2 things 1) said not to operate without a gaurd..
    I never noticed any security there during operation
    2) I can not stand RENTING machines and working on them ... drives me NUTS
    If it is my own equipment I can except that there are hiccups but these rental places get machines back and just gas them and wait for the next customer... they should inspect and run the equipment before and after every rental
    Ps just for the haters, I am just sayn that when you rent the equipment it should work ....knowing full well its not 100%, but come on.. a couple of cuts in and it stoped.. we have had that stuff happen here with rentals and it was easily avoided
    Had me worried at the end, sounded like you were gonna get one for the weekend then I really would never catch ya 🤠👍 🤣😂🤣😂

      Regarding the Guard - Safety is in our top 5 at the weekend homestead. Nice thing was got a full refund for the day and re-scheduled for 2 weeks out. If your free and want to help out, send me a message and ill send the homestead jet to come pick you up. Only private jet that has a sawdust toilet and free range chickens onboard.

    I can vouch for Eric, we all got a bit teary eyed as it was loaded up. We did have a moment of silence as the processor headed back to the shop. Hopefully we will try again in the next 2 weeks. Thanks for coming out that day. It was fun even if we didn't make epic sawdust!

    Thanks for sharing! I have never seen it on a small scale. With a machine like this, you can be splitting firewood all day! Technology is a great and wonderful thing, but the downside is maintenance. Please keep up the great work and sharing with your subscribers!

    Nice video. In the beginning of your video when you were driving you flashed to sign resort signs. One was Nystroms resort. Funny because we will be staying there for a week this summer. Not sure how to get there from southern Mn though. we will figure it out..

    I rented one of these last summer. We had accumulated a large stockpile of logs from a n acreage being cleared. It was a learning experience to say the least. When running at full speed we processed 12 cords in 8 hours. Only drawback was the logs I had were large. The processor had a limit of 22” diameter. 20% of the logs I had were beyond that and are still waiting to be blocked and split.

    Those are awesome, I have to buy my firewood and they have a huge setup like this indoors. Their Dad is a logger so they probably get a good deal on that. They cut, split and loads right in the truck/trailer in no time. Then off for delivery. I think she just told me they have 450 customers now. Great video brother 👍👍

    I pass a place every time we go to town that has a commercial set up. I can see the logs being loaded and the split would coming off a conveyor in to a dump truck. He can sure split a bunch of wood with the machine he has!

    Been watching your videos lately. Cool to see a younger guy into firewood etc. So you are burning a little more than a cord a month.
    We cut mostly oak and walnut in Missouri. A good splitter that is awesome and more affordable is the Timberwolf series. Four-way head, extended catch table, Kohler Engine, and hydraulic log lift make this one great machine. How much snow do ya’ll get in Minnesota annually?

    I own the Dyna sc12xp . It can outwork 2 people + . If I can keep up feeding it logs it eats 1.5cd per hr. 2 yr ago $14K it pays for its self .

  • @ravenfeather7087
    @ravenfeather7087 5 років тому +1

    At $100 per full cord purchased locally it would cost me $600 per year (maximum) to heat my home. So $300 per say seems a lot to pay. Assuming I could even get it all processed in one day (without a breakdown). Plus you have to get full length logs to a specific site to make the processing efficient with a processor. All those transportation and non-processor equipment costs would eat away at whatever savings you think might be accrued by using a processor.
    In some instances there might be a savings in time but even that is questionable. In fact, doing the labor oneself (using your own time as a source of savings) is one of the few savings accrued when processing and burning firewood. Using firewood for heat is a marginally profitably process to start with. Add something like the cost of a processor and you may as well buy already cut, split, and delivered firewood or buy a fossil fuel.

    you should have put on a different chain that one wasn't sharpened correctly or was way to dull , my processor does the exact same thing when the chain is really dull it may appear to be sharp but its not just my personal experience

    Issues like this,even on any hyd circuit,check relief valve,check directional control valve on stack,check pump pressures ,Even a collapsed or pinched line or fitting,this is relevant on any circuit.I would have called the rental company and have them shoot out there,most are very good.

    If a person preps and preps (or cheats and has a load of logs delivered) and has a skid with grapple or tines, one could definitely make some hills of firewood! More of a two person operation. I always figure by the time I buck logs, sort out the ones that won't work and process them separately and drag the rest from all different locations and then just run the firewood out in a pile that I couldn't stand to look at unstacked, it's waaaayy better for me personally to get them where they lay and work them up a couple three trailer loads at a time. Waaayyy more satisfying too if one really enjoys making firewood from tree to stove. Seeeeee, it's actually a blessing it didn't work!

    I own the Dyna SC12XP it is the little brother to the one in your vid. It makes about 1.5cd per hr. You would need a firewood business to go with it. I'm in N. central TN and weight wood goes for about $25ton.
    My guess the problem with the processor is it has water in the hyd system and some water settled in a hyd line and frozen.

      Solidwoods are you close to Oneida in Scott County? You said wood costs $25 a ton in central Tennessee, how much would a cord of hardwood weigh ? Tim

    • @solidwoods6999
      @solidwoods6999 5 років тому

      Howdy I'm in Fentress. I don't sell weight wood, I purchase it.I don't sell firewood , I use it for the lumber kiln and heating (hot water system) so I don't stack it neat . I've looked it up before but I can't remember the #. A good way to find out is find the nearest weight scales and load a measured qty. and weigh the truck empty/heavy .One of the hard parts with weight wood is finding a logger with a dump truck or you could go to the woods and they load on your trailer/truck. I have a knuckleboom truck for the mill .

    I can certainly see the attraction and the potential of a machine like that. I also think the experience you had there with the break down was all too common. I looked at the three of you and thought that with three good keen men on saws you would have made a big dent in that job, while saving some money and frustration. We always look for the most low-tech and simple way to tackle a job and that works pretty well for us. Enjoyed the video and understand the pleasure you get from working with a friend. Thanks.

    Firewood,not always based on money.if you own a woodlot,the time in the woods,the outdoors give you a good workout,yes you do get to use motorized equipment that most mechanical guys enjoy,the dry heat of a wood fire is better than oil,gas and propane combined,and finally,the sheer independence from solely relying on someone else to keep you warm,namely big oil,thats why I burn.I really do not care about the cost factor,im on mother earth once,live it!!
