  • I love getting to answer questions that you guys have! No question is off limits... clearly! We played the violin on my hair...But now I'm realizing that might not have been exactly what the question meant but oh well. We tried. lol

Hi Corrie! Great stuff and thanks so much for answering my question regarding ear training of the little ones. I looked up Suzuki Book 1 and it seems loaded with nice tunes. I would not call it easy by any means though. Can"t even imagine Book 10! No wonder you're a champ at picking up melodies on the fly if you were trained with this method. Cheers!

Yes the Suzuki books are amazing! Book 10 is just the Mozart Concerto No 4

I grew up playing Suzuki at age 3 up into college. I developed a really great ear but always struggled with reading music and it held me back in orchestras or learning unfamiliar songs. I had music theory classes that went along with my lessons as I got older but I always struggled within being naturally good at it. I have two young kids (4 and 8) that are genuinely interested in playing the violin. Do you have any recommendations to learning through Suzuki but also being successful with sight reading and music theory? I don’t play violin anymore but I play guitar in a rock band and I am so thankful for my Suzuki background because ear training is the best thing when playing in a band environment.

Wow, this is such a real thing. I almost had the exact same experience. I was in a Suzuki program that also had a string orchestra. This helped a little with some basics of reading music.
But the main pivot happened when I was 10. My mom put me into a youth symphony and that really forced me to level up. Then at 14, I started college music theory courses. By the time I was 16, I was tutoring college students on music theory, playing in symphonies, shows, operas, orchestras, ballets, quartets, and writing music. This all helped sooo much as I was literally sight reading brand new repertoire almost daily…and getting paid to do it.
All that to say, the Suzuki method is one of the most incredible ways to learn the violin. You can tell if a kid learned through Suzuki because their ear is so sharp and they play so so well. The downfall is when Suzuki students stay in their Suzuki bubble and don’t ever join orchestras or symphonies or anything like that. Let your kids learn to play for a few years and then have them jump into a youth orchestra.
This was a ramble but I hope that helps!! Good luck.

Hi Corrie, thank you for doing these video, just couple of question I can do vibrato but my hand and fingers won't let me move freely I just try to relax however looking is easy than doing very frustrated, it supposes to press down on the note by the finger and rolling and pivoting, I can only do it very short and stop
Second question , even though people have perfect pitch, I can hear the music and play it , I still need to work out the fingering and shifting. I guess having perfect pitch , it doesn't mean to play the music instantly. Fingering and bowing how do you determine what kind of bowing if there is no markings

Hi! I’m not 100% sure about your vibrato question?
But for your second question, that’s relative pitch and very impressive you can do that! You don’t need perfect pitch to play the violin.
Figuring out the fingering and showing that works is just playing a ton of different music and figuring out what you like and what flows with the music.

I think the one that asked about your hair, meant do you ever play with your hair down and your violin resting over your hair? 😂
