The Golden Age of Wireless is one of my favorite records of all time. It, in part, made me want to become a musician. I was 14 & it sounded so different-very English & also unapologetically synthetic!! Thank you for inspiring me with science, Mr. Dolby.
Amazing to see this master at work as he shares synth info with us. Thx to this channel 4 this rare tid bit. I've been a fan of Dolby since high school. ❤
After almost 40 years, I'm rediscovering TD - and what a great pleasure to come back to all this wonderful stuff. It's the icing on the cake that he's such an eloquent and interesting speaker.
A truly underappreciated artist during the 1980s, but those of us who were fans then knew what an incredible artist Thomas Dolby, and we were right! Well deserved recognition!
Always loved Europa, far more than Blinded. Early Thomas Dolby was top of his Musical game. Personal favorite was I Scare Myself. I remember the Golden Age of Wireless tour, still one of the best concerts I ever saw
I was so lucky to get to see Thomas in concert in 1987. It was and still is one of the best concerts I ever saw and I saw some amazing concerts in the 60"s,70's,80's and 90's. I got to see most of the big acts in those era's. One of the best things was how acrobatic he was, he did this somersault off of the back of the bass player that still seems fantastical. Plus the music was outstanding. All of his albums still get regularly played in my house. This was very cool to see him recreate a couple of his great hits.
no words for how beautiful and haunting this synth pop masterpiece is, i loved above all other of his songs (although I love the neon sisters almost as well).
Thank goodness someone had the nous to organize and record this ,Thomas looks and sounds amazing,,atrue pioneer of synth music and light years ahead of his time, genius many many thanx for this❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@AntwhaleNearfar Yeah, but "Whip it" basically ended DEVO. The record company, the radio stations and the fair weather "fans" all wanted another "Whip It" and DEVO just wanted to go back to being DEVO. Once they did go back to being DEVO and "New Traditionalists" failed to have another "Whip-it", they were written off as "One Hot Wonders". Sad, as IMHO, "Through being cool", "Love Without Anger" and especially "Beautiful World" are all far better songs than "Whipt it".
@@AntwhaleNearfar I swear that the Cars 45 on the jukebox at out local bowling alley go worn out it was played so much. Devo was almost too far out there. We made fun of it more than anything.
I don't think I'd heard any of his other songs except "She Blinded Me With Science." Man, I missed out. Glad to know there's more out there. I don't know why I didn't look before. The stories behind these are really cool.

One of the things I love about this is that he didn't do it on the laptop. Mr Thomas Dolby was one of the people that used the just functioning electronics as instruments (yes, there were people before, but Thomas was someone that embraced them).
Most people don't realize how freaking talented Mr. Dolby was and still is. As a producer, arranger and just a very original musical artist. Golden Age of Wireless is, of course, seminal but so many of his other albums are genius as well plus all of the other tracks, scores and other work he has done. Check Astronauts and Heretics if you haven't before.
this is funny because after one minute watching him talk i said to myself What an Legend this Guy is He is an true Pioneer/Geniuse from the very early 80s BUT someone allready used the Word Genuise befor me ha ha ha ha...? Wish he would come to Tour Australia...
It took me 25 years to find out who did this song and I had his album on my shelf since '85. Weird. It had One of our Submarines, Blinded me with Science, and Radio Silence. I'll have to see if Europa is on there.
Could you give me some advice....or shall I say, knowledge, on what program you are using on your laptop to hook up the Jupiter 4 and 8 ? It would be greatly appreciated !!!
Back in the 80's, my gang all thought that synth music wasn't truly 'artistic' unless it was made by the human hand touching an instrument in say, a rock band. Well, what did a bunch of teens in their prime in the 80's know about anything, right? Looking back on synth music made the way that he displays, does take talent. Nowadays, as a geezer of the 80's, Dolby mentions how everything is done on a computer. Imho, I don't see computerized music as taking much talent at all to make. However, in the next 40 years after this observation, I will again probably change my opinion about it. But alas, I will probably be gone by then. Opinions change, and so do tastes.
Plugins were ruined for me the instant they were put into clouds and sign-in walls owned by the distributors. The most effective way to kill inspiration is being unable to re-open a project because you’ve forgotten the password to Roland Cloud/Arturia whatever, because you haven’t used in a week or two and the license wants to confirm itself.
TMDR is my musical hero and that will never change! As for the Roland... I have Roland GW-8 which is a piece of crap - never got any answer from the Technical Support because the sequencer programming had many many bugs and they never fixed that. Roland in the 1980s and in the 21st century definitively is not the same Roland.

Outstanding. In 24 hours he prepared for and performed this highly complex song all by himself, including the vocals. That's a musician for you.
not taking anything away from him as he is great but i imagine we would have had it all down pat for many years from his shows etc
True genius at work. Thomas still gives me chills, even after 40+ years.
I miss those early 80's jams - good times. Best years of my life.
AS AWESOME AS THE 1ST TIME I HEARD THIS MYSTERIOUS SONG AS A BOY
I grew up with this music and now loved hearing Thomas Dolby talk about the way he created the music so original...
Me too I remember watching Europa and the pirate twins video on mtv getting ready for school

This remains one of my all-time favourite songs!
Innovator, pioneer, massive talent
I've always respected Thomas but honestly, my impression of him has grown by leaps and bounds after watching this series of videos. What a great guy!
First record I ever bought was Europa and the Pirate Twins and I still love it to bits :)

Damn that was bad ass! I’m a rocker and I think this kicked ass! Go get’em Thomas! 80’s forever! Rock in peace Ed Van Halen! 🎸😔
Van Halen played on a couple of Dolby songs
80’s new wave was defined by Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” and the MTV video. Period end of story. He sounds amazing.
No. “Cars” by Gary Numan or “Whip It” by Devo or “Don’t You Want Me” by Human League.

A true genius of the synthand sound:! Salute Thomas Dolby!!
Absolutely brilliant.
Awesome 1978 original analog Roland Jupiter 4.
Classic Roland synths, loving this rare gem!
Dolby's a genius.
This is my favourite song of his, but I do love his son's Covid version of this song! Brilliant! Definitely worth checking out!
Also caught the making of She Blinded Me…. This was a wonderful stroll back into my teen years. Thank you
Omg so bloody awesome
Genius

Great video and performances. He's still got it. GAoW a classic.
I just love that first album from end to end, class and talent, been making me happy for decades, thank you Mr Robertson.

I would certainly buy tickets for an Australian tour!
Genius 🙂 And no Buicks were eaten in the making of the show :-)

Thomas Dolby ... fabuloso
Personally i think these is much better than the original single.
Agreed. I’d have been dancing in place. Been a fan of Dolby since MTV first premiered the BMWS video.
Wow!
Fantastic Mister Dolby 😎👏
Fantastic!
*Genus*
amazing! thank you for posting
Genius!
Really appreciate you sharing another wonderful performance!
The title's a little misleading though as Thomas doesn't show a breakdown of this song.
Roland Announces “Thomas Dolby Live in Roland Cloud” Thursday, July 26, at 4:00 P.M. PDT facebook.com/events/1769870769761840/
I say 12 of Never quite often when giving dates
Please Mr. Dolby. Tell us. WHO was the girl on the title of the magazine. This is a real story, right? Still amazing Dolby-music ⭐ I love it!
Would love a Soft-Moog!!! Anyone know of one?
Could you give me some advice....or shall I say, knowledge, on what program you are using on your laptop to hook up the Jupiter 4 and 8 ? It would be greatly appreciated !!!
Am I right in thinking the verse is in one key and the chorus in another?
I prefer this tune over Blinded Me With Science, same with One Of Our Submarines

Sounds like very Kraftwerk 👍

This saddens me. Great tunes reduced to a corporate karaoke clusterfuck. Love you, Mr. Thomas Dolby, but this isn't the way.
