    I have been waiting for these shocks for several months. I talked to Matt at Acme about this project around the time I pulled the engine for overhaul. He thought they could make a unit that would work much better. That is an understatement. I am thrilled to have a real shock absorber now. The oleo Maule uses look like something from the 1920's. The oleo I have been using was something that I took inspiration from AOSS. The were filled with ureathane disc segments stacked up and a die spring for the big hits. It worked much better then a Maule oleo. This Acme shock is nothing short of amazing in comparison. Great job Matt at Acme Aero Fab!

    Really loving your videos. Jumping over a 12” log! What a way to test a set of shocks. This really makes me want to move my plane over to the experimental category. Fortunately on the shock side the Stinson has a great system already. Keep showing the places you can go with a good Bush plane people need to keep seeing planes are fun,

    I often get 1 little bounce with my ACME's, kind of like some of what I see in your vid here., so I feel mine are a bit too stiff, or could use a touch more rebound control... but then I load up my plane heavy and they turn to butter. They really work best when I'm heavier... I believe that was the intention from ACME, and it all works out pretty well. They are very stable on hill sides and such too which some of the other offerings don't seem to do as well with. Sideloading the gear and compressing one seems the only easy way a guy could damage these shocks. I like having a spring inside in case there is a leak it won't sag down. Great company to work with. Matt took care of me. I'd love to upgrade my T3 tail to a stinger at some point. Looking forward to your review of the stinger. -Todd

    Cow dung glue🤣. You had my wife in stitches.... Yip your undercarriage is hanging a bit lower once you're airborne but that doesn't seem to be to much of a problem? Those tires can take a pounding but you can clearly see how the shocks delay the undercarriage from bouncing when you went over those ditches. They're clearly doing their job.. Looks like a great mod Greg. Love that strip of yours.

    I know it's not how it's done, but a trailing link is way more able to take a hit from the front (like a log or rock) than standard legs that swing out to the side like this. Sure this kind of gear is great at handling a drop, but that log was taken by the bushwheel more than the gear.
    I've bent the rear tube on a conventional leg from hitting a rock, there's just not any give in the direction of the hit.

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 роки тому +1

      It is heavy and adds complexity, look at all Mike Patey went through on Draco to get the trailing link to work. Stock Wilga trailing link would not hold up to what you can through at it with 35" ABW. I know a guy that hit logs just to see what would fail and it was not the gear leg or bolts it was the lower longeron and it was an 18" log direct hit with 35" ABW and AOSS suspension. He started with smaller and worked his way up to the 18" log. His pocket book has more dollar signs in it than mine and he can afford to do this type of real world testing.

    Like others have said, the heavier you are, the better the ACMEs work. I am not on the latest gen yet, but all versions are good in my lightweight Cub. In my humble opinion, the Stinger is just as good of an improvement, better than the T3, and years ahead of a standard leaf spring. I'd love to see the fabrication that went into the top eye attach point? Your fab skills and overall design is always top notch.

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 роки тому +1

      I assume you mean the camber of the tire not toe in. I am guessing working with Acme we can fix that partially, but that is also part of the 4.5" of travel you get from their shock. Like I said they engineered them for 1.25 at static and I had 1.650, so the numbers did not fully work out in the real world. Still even if that is the best they can do I will take it, never going back to 1920's technology. If you look at the Beringer shock/gear set up it really hangs down on a Super Cub. I don't see it as too much of a problem except maybe on off camber LZ's that is why I want to test it and see how it responds. Probably look at that this weekend.

    I know you knownway more then me prob!! But cam you change your wheel angles?? it seems you’re putting a lot of undue stress sideways on your bearings and on your rods coming down like a 45° angle when you come down it’s like a 22° angle inward that seems to be too much but looking at the camera pictures if it was flatter coming down the wheels wouldn’t take so much of a sideways torsion! Strike!! Oh no doubt you def got a set!!! And your home runway lol not my level not even close if ever!!!! Love your attitide though!🦾🤙🏼🥶

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 роки тому

      Axle angle is fixed to the gear, it is a weldment. The side load you are seeing is minimal as the shock soaks up the bumps the tires take a lot of the stress too. We are still working out the amount of nitrogen to run in them but they are only tucked until you put a load on them. They have a piston and oil which is metered so that you don't get rebound. They are a huge improvement over anything I have ever had on this airplane but we are still tweaking to get it correct. If you grab the wing an rock the airplane it does not rock, as soon as you let go there is zero continuation.
