- Due to a copyright claim with Saban, I have had to make a slight change to this review in this special UA-cam edition.
With Jetman's success, Toei decided to keep the Super Sentai franchise going and hired cop drama writer Noboru Sugimura to helm their next iteration along with a few of the series that followed. His first attempt at a Super Sentai show dealt with eastern fantasy set in modern day Japan and included dinosaurs. How does Zyuranger fair? Watch to find out.

Fun Fact: The first two seasons of Super Sentai were not offically added into the Super Sentai lineup until some point after Dairanger which makes Dairanger an anniversary season.
Not quite. It's Kaku that would have been an anniversary series since BFJ was 79, Dai was 93 while Kaku is 94.

Actually, Goranger and JAKQ have always been apart of Super Sentai since the beginning. Check out a video called 'Toku Misconceptions', it explains all about it, and another misconception that Ninja Captor was a 'lost sentai'.
Now I will say this the first season of mmpr is mixed at most it's definitely a product of its time but I will give credit to him Saban he discovered super Sentai in Japan and just knew it could work in America and he was right when I think about it when mmpr debuted in 1993 there wasn't really a show like it on the air at that time
There most definitely wasn't. I am still curious to see how things would have turned out when Stan Lee wanted to do it.
Its such a shame that the voice actors in the american dubb had to go through with so much shit and got such crappy treatment from saban and others involved with the show behind the scenes for those first few seasons . The red and green ranger hated each other’s guts for a while because of uneven unfair pay between the actors. it got show bad that Jason Zack and trinity went on strike during season 2 and tried to unionize and saban hired body doubles and then flat out axed them. Poor billy got it the worst I don’t know most of the more specific details but I can generalize from what I found out several years was billy left the show midway through zeo the execuse written into the show was that he went into space to help the aquatar rangers a set of american only canon rangers from another plant that had to show up for part of mighty morphin season 3 because all the rangers got turned into kids again except billy he managed to restore him self to being a tenn by master vile Rita fathers the secondary main villain of kakuranger spoiler warning he’s absent for the first part of the series which focus on Prince junior as the main villain for a while. What really happened with billy was he came out of the closet aka it came out he was gay he got the living day lights harshed out of him verbally thats the really reason why he left it was not the main cast the loved and adored billy it was other people that were the problem. I think a certain Star treak actor can sympathize with poor billy he went through the exact same shit when he came out of the closet. It royal pisses me of billy was treated like that billy was the coolest ranger on the American series in my opinion the guy was there dam equivalent of miles prowler for crying out loud our Clemont from Pokémon kalos anima series if you want a more current example.

Personal opinion: I think Burai was kinda more special than Tommy in a morbid way. He only appeared a handful of times before his death, but you got a sense of his character when he did appear. It was rumored that Tommy was supposed to die when he transferred his powers to Jason, but was so popular that the writers let him come back. I think the writers, along with parents overreacting about the show, didn't think kids in the 90s weren't ready for a mature lesson like that.
Would Tommy dying made PR different? Yes, it would have. WOuld it be for better or worse? I can't say. Burai wasn't the only Sentai hero to die, there were those before and after he did, but that didn't mean his death was any less emotional. I myself would have been crush if Tommy died, but maybe that's the lesson. Characters you root for aren't exactly safe should the writing demand they go in one direction. If anything, Burai's death and all before and after shows that, even with all their powers and weapons... they're not invincable. They can get hurt like anyone else, and yes, they can die if anything goes wrong.
I'd say Burai and Tommy are equally impactful. For Sentai, it was the first time a sixth ranger had ever truly been done and no one knew what to expect. For PR, Tommy was what really solidified the franchise with audiences, causing PR to become the phenomenon it was.
Another thing I "liked" about Burai's passing is the zyurangers' sad road towards accepting the fact he's dead. Even after going through the challenge of getting the water of life from Clotho they are told that even that won't revive him because no one and nothing can go against the limits that she sets.
The scene with the putties running into the house after they were let in by the girl and then the rangers chase after them was funny as hell

@@asherzerbib3461 They already were from the very beginning when Power Rangers was adapted to western audiences to begin with but this scene is like a Power Ranger adaptation of a Benny Hill chase scene

I was really surprised when I finally got to watch this with my wife. It was fun pointing out which episodes from MMPR the footage got adapted into and it was also rather neat seeing the show as it was intended. The show definitely had whimsy and a great sense of the fantastic given the fantasy elements. Hard to choose a favorite episode, as I found the series itself a lot of fun to watch. I think maybe a top contender for favorite has to be the Goushi focus episode that involve him going up against a black knight, and the whole thing is being recorded or broadcast live, and the Rangers see the broadcast and they decide to jump into the television in order to be transported to his location. It's absolutely absurd, and frustratingly funny that they would just decide to jump into the television like that's the most obvious and rational thing to do. Lol. Another top contender is the one that features the snake monster that is causing apples to grow out of children's heads and then turn them into giant apples for Bandora to consume and obtain youth. That had a lot of great bits of symbolism and mythos combined together. The snake like the serpent from the garden of eden, the apple first grows out of the head like it's from the tree of knowledge, and the fact that the apple bestows youth and immortality is right out of the legends of the golden apples.
I did like how this show gave us more of Lami and showcased her badassery. And Machiko Soga was an absolute hoot as always.
Yeah, I like a lot of the mythology involved that some tend to gloss over initially. Bandora was a real treat and I wish they had given Rita a tragic backstory, but whatever.
Imagine the number of traumatized kids if MMPR kept that certain scene where we get to see Jason waking up to find skeletons of Billy, Kimberly, Trini and Zack.

Ironically the actress played as a villain in Maskman in 1987 and X1 is the sixth ranger he only appears in one episode. The six ranger is also the green ranger. The green ranger loses his morphin ability at the end of the episode. I grow up watching Burai as my favorite ranger as well.

Kaiju no Kami I started watching power ranger and super sentai in the 90’s my cousin that growing up in the 80’s told me Machiko Soga is also a villain in maskman. I believed she play as the Earth Imperial Empress

This sentai crossed over to America and became an overnight sensation I bet Haim Saban didn’t think super sentai would blow up as big as it did when he adapted it for American audience
Actually no, Saban knew it would be a hit in the states, which is why he had been trying to bring it over since Bioman. It was everyone else that didn't believe in it.

Yeah man, Zyuranger was the first Super Sentai dvd I ever bought since I was curious of how different it was from Power Rangers. I like both though to be honest, though I will say the 1st season of Power Rangers is definitely the cheesiest season out of all of them.

I liked this series because you could understand Bandora's reasons for hating the rangers. She blamed them for the death of her son. Some of Bandora's plans were dark like stealing the souls of children and putting them into marionettes.
Also Goldar was a lot more intimidating in Zyuuranger compared to Power Rangers.
All in all I really enjoyed the series.
I agree with you on all fronts. I loved how threatening all of the villains were when they wanted to be. I don't mind the children of the week plots since they make sense with the overall narrative, though I wouldn't have minded less of them.
Yuta has actually met one of his American Counterparts in Austin St John, when they did the morphing/henshin scene recreation it was hilarious as I believe the coin in Austin's Morpher popped out.

maximaldinotrap not a power rangers fan hated power rangers since I was nine in 1993 on,y saw episodes 1 and 7 the reason why I saw episode 7 was my sister who was 7 at the time my teacher told me that power rangers used stock footage from dinosaur squad zyuranger and dubbed it the stock. Footage was when the teens morph into the rangers and monsters and zords were the same. Footage witch bandora was Rita and bandora's gang was Rita's gang that is what my teacher told me at the time 😊

Now that I think about it, while it's a coincidence but Barbara Goodson being a English voice dub for Enya in Stardust Crusaders became somewhat more fitting than it seems. While Rita Repulsa's backstory is different from Bandora but still with how Enya wanting revenge for her son's death, it's a funny thing. Difference being that Enya was already evil to begin with.

Toei actually had a fan poll to see if fans wanted Burai to live or die and they said live. But you’re probably thinking “Then why did they still kill him off?." Well it was the same reason they killed Gai In the previous series. To show that even hero’s can die too.

Zyutei Daizyuzin barely appears in show on it's own compared to the other mecha modes because the shoulder appliance made was so heavy it actually risked injuring the suit actor.

I don’t hate this show the way most the fandom does but I still wouldn’t call myself a fan. There’s things I like and things I dislike. It all balances out into a 3/5 guis show for me. Favorite episode was episode where Goushi disguises himself and fought Geki to remind him about how he’s supposed to be the leader.
That episode is definitely great and I think it really defines Goushi's character beyond the one with his sister.

While Rita has her own charm I have to say I prefer Bandora over her. Not only is she more competent but she also treats her minions like actual living beings and her backstory really makes you feel sorry for her. And of course who could forget her theme!
Then there's also Bandora's backstory that fuels her entire being.

Nope. I'm only reviewing the series when Kraken releases them. I'll be doing Makai Senki during Halloween Month in Oct since I should have both volumes by then.
Oh yeah, I also haven't even watched those seasons at all yet. Outside of the terrible Zero minis, I gave up on the series after the less than stellar Makai no Hana, especially when they keep bringing back Ryuga and his crappy universe.
Kaiju no Kami the SG1(Stargate:)) paramilitaries in yami terasu mono were lame when chasing Ryuga, like hello you have P90 rifles! Lol
I love Zyuranger, but I've heard some reviewers complain about the extensive use of Deus ex machina in this series. For example, the team retrieving the weapons upgrade after getting trapped in one of the first few episodes.
I like that they have to acquire new weapons right in the beginning of the show as it shows that their weapons did not hold up over the centuries.

Let's get to this from a nostalgia standpoint this series to me was certainly great as i grew up watching both, Zyuranger and MMPR however when it comes the package as a whole. Meh
Don't get me wrong Geki and Burai are great charactets but the rest i wish they could have done more. The villains sans Dai-Satan, are all enjoyable characters too. The idea of blending in mythology is also fantastic, where Zyuranger fails at is the children of the week plots.
I found Zyuranger to be just a great watch nostalgia or not.

Just finished this series last night.
Instead of giving it a score at the end due to how I felt watching the show, I ranked each episode out of 10 and then calculated the average to give the final score for the series a 7.30.
I plan to do this for all the series now and see hoe they all rank in order lol.
Anyway the Zyuranger feel underdeveloped because the show puts more emphasis on developing the child of the week instead of our main cast and by the time you reach the doraunicorn episode and they're hitting you over the head with save nature you're just about ready to give up, thankfully the series ends 5 episodes later lol.
Episode 11 with the genie really is the worst episode in the series it's annoying and should be skipped, just pretend the show has 49 episodes instead of 50. episode 40 isnt much better since its a clip show but it starts of the death of burai arc so its a little better.
As for Burai, he's such a missed opportunity, he doenst get to really develop any kind of bond with the rest of the zyuranger as he's trapped in that room the whole time, he doesn't get to fight a single dora monster in his suit as part of the team, it's just zord battles and that's hugely disappointing.
Despite my negatives the show does have very good episodes, most of the main plot stuff aka the first 6 episodes, 17-22 the burai arc, 28-31 the dokita clay/great satan arc, 41 & 42 the death of burai and 47-50 are very enjoyable and shows when the focus is on the main plot there's a great show in there.
Episode 43 showing Dragon Ceaser and Geki dealing with their grief over Burai is probably my favourite episode in the series. Episode 39 with the goda creature is a really good episode too and i actually liked that you didnt get the usual save the day ending.
I know it was late in the series and the public turning against teh Zyuranger is too easy but Episode 46 is still a great episode to me.
Mei also has some of my favourite episodes too, she's probably the best of the Zyuranger and episodes 26 and 38 with her becoming a punk and having to save the day alone is great as is her disguise battle with Lami.
so overall the series has some serious hinderances with the children basically stealing the spotlight from the main heroes and not doing enough with Burai but when the main plot kicks in there is a good show to be seen here. just skip episode 11.

I was really amazed they showed Dragon Caesar mourning Burai's passing. I never expected to see that ever happen.
Since this review, I've actually grown more fond of the genie episode whereas the sneezing episode gets worse for me every time I see it.

Zyuranger looks visually different from Turboranger, Fiveman, and Jetman since Zyuranger was something different for Super Sentai and a turning point for the whole franchise.
Yep. I really feel part of that has to do with Sugimura taking over as head writer and doing something completely different with the franchise from what came before.
Zyurangr does not have a strong entensive plot but it handled the western myth element so well.
Well it does, but it's more subdued compared to some others.
Remember how in your previous upload of this video, I made a suggestion as how to improve characterization, particularly with Dan the Blue Ranger of this series? Well allow me to further elaborate on how it could’ve been done.
I honestly feel that the show could’ve benefited from at least one extra episode to flesh out Dan’s character. Specifically, I would’ve made the episode with Eye Guy a two-parter and have Dan quit being a Zyuranger out of rage due to being fed up with the burden. However, we discover that his anger, deep down inside stems from fear and he learns to overcome it, re-joins the team and all is well.
Do you like my suggestion? If so, please tell me what you would’ve done to make this series as good as Dairanger in your opinion.

I definitely think they could have improved Dan. I don't think quitting would have been the right choice since those episodes miss more often than they hit, especially since the first 6 episodes were developing the rangers as having to work as a team, but him being immature from fear could have been an interesting plot point.
As for making the series as good as Dairanger, I'm not sure really. I guess drop the child of the week plots and give each ranger a subplot that is built up throughout the series. It's weird though, but I feel Dairanger is what it is because Sugimura didn't want to just redo Zyuranger.

MMPR was pretty much just a bunch of stand alone stories though whereas Zyuranger had a story to tell with its tales.
I'm so glad to find someone else who likes Zyuranger like I do. Alot of other reviews i've seen are just hating on this season and I don't think it's as bad as they think it is. Also I actually liked the genie episode it wasn't the greatest but it was better than the power rangers adaptation where they barely even used the genie in the episode and destroyed it way to easily at least in my opinion
I honestly don't get the hate for Zyuranger either. Like I get if people aren't a fan of it due to the child of the week plots, but I feel the series' greatness overshadows the negatives.
As for the genie episode, if I were to rereview the series today (which I will do after I've finished every other Sentai series so I can have a Zyuranger review in the same style as my others), it would be the sneezing episode I would put as my least favorite instead. The genie one does have a charm to it the more I've watched it, whereas I disdain the sneezing one more with each viewing.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork My least favorite episode would be the one with Dora Narcissus the plant monster that qas really vain. I can't remember it a whole lot but it annoyed me that the monster was defeated cause it was distracted by admiring it's reflection at least I think that's what happened. Either way that was one of the stupidest weakness i've ever seen for a monster at least in my opinion
I thought it made a lot of sense given his name describes what he is. Plus, that episode had the brillaint bits of Geki learning about Burai's impending doom and Goushi donning the armor, pretending to be a villain.

It sucks that Saban copyright claimed so many of your super sentai videos when it comes to the Japanese to American comparison between Sentai and Power Rangers footage.
It seemed like they were on a claim binge as they were claiming everyone's videos even if they had a picture of a ranger costume in it.
That sucks, it is like Saban does not want people to know of Super Sentai if they are copyright claim any video with a ranger costume from Zyuranger onwards.
That really is a pain to have to deal with this especially on youtube where fair use law does not seem to exist to these people.

I wished they'd worked Burai into Power Rangers where he could've been the original Green Ranger that Rita defeated and killed.
What they did with this show is that when this show was sent to the U.S.A they filmed new human scenes and used stock footage for the monster action. Also they changed the villans name to reta repulsa

Zyuranger is way better than mighty morphin power rangers because they don't mind killing the sixth ranger (Burai in this case).
Among the story just being better.
But it really is steel fantastic that Super sentai was appealing to American audience because what works in Japan doesn’t necessarily translate well with American audience sometimes but Power Rangers/super sentai did
True, but I think in this case it was just because American audiences had never seen anything like it before. I can't speak for others, but I was instantly enamored by Power Rangers the moment I read about it in a toy magazine like three days before I saw the first commercial for it.

I finished watching this season yesterday and with all honesty it was okay. The villains were entertaining and the costumes were great but the story is not there and the main 5 rangers could be replaced by the wood from Ed,edd, and eddy and nothing would change and the 6th ranger was decent.
There is an ongoing story, however, it wasn't until my second viewing of the show where I saw its brilliance.
Zyuranger is really good its the series that brought us power rangers so allot of people give it browny points for.
And it;'s just a great series from a writing perspective.

No need to apologize, this was my first Sentai review ever, which was about a month after I started the channel. As such, it taught me how to NOT make a TV series review.
To answer your question though, I do plan on re-reviewing both Zyuranger and Dairanger once I have knocked out every other Sentai series first so that their styles match the style I started with Kakuranger.
Geeki and buria our half brothers. Meaning they had the same mom but different dads our it was the other way around.
If I recall, they had the same parents, but Geki was given away to another kingdom because they lacked an heir.
It wuold love seeing an Dino sentai that didn’t use magic instead using pure technology

Few years later, seeing how MMPR is still getting stuff even though its past its prime at this point, I'm surprised we never have a Zyuranger manga remake or something. That and because I'm sick to death of a lot of MMPR shilling sans the ZAP Megazord by Hasbro.
Why not? It would make Zyuranger stand out and leave out the child of the week formula for a more character driven story for the Zyurangers and I think we might have ourselves something that would stand along with the Kamen Rider W and Kuuga mangas. That...would be amazing to see.
It could be interesting, but I would rather see Dairanger or Kakuranger get a manga adaptation.

Toei probably though nobody would notice . . . that or they did that on purpose to have paleo nerds scratching their heads. I wouldn't be surprised if they did that for that purpose as it is Japan.
Also kid's show allegedly. Even though Toei could have easily used a more accurate Cretaceous date as a way to educate kids.
At least King Brachion fits in the Jurassic so that one is a plus.
Then again this is a world where humans lived alongside dinosaurs so our real world science need not apply.

lol I don't even care what's scientifically realistic in Sentai. They're grown ups wearing rainbow colored spandex fighting monsters. As long as the story, action, and character development are good, I'm happy. Oh, and not be boring, definitely not boring.

This was a good Sentai to adapt for American audience because Jurassic Park debuted in 1993 and smashed the box office. So mmpr came right in the mist of the dinosaur craze besides kids love dinosaurs

on tv tropes this was said abotu zyuranger what u tink Zyuranger is often cited as being better to MMPR due to being more overt with its darker themes such as death, god-vs-devil conflict, and a revenge quest. Yet, those who have actually watched both and compared them have cited that much of these supposedly more mature elements fall apart with the smaller details, from contrivances, lack of character focus, agency, or development by the heroes, the divine forces that are supposed to be helping them actively hamper them for the flimsiest of reasons, and so on. Burai's Heroic Sacrifice, while in concept is not bad, is guilty of all of the above, and in many ways could have been easily avoided, or at least played out in better ways. Plus, many have pointed that a character dying is not automatically better than a character getting to live, especially if more can be done with the character.
I disagree about story details falling part and I would also agree that Zyuranger is better than MMPR. MMPR had no true story arc in its first season beyond Welcome Green Ranger, Bye Green Ranger, Hi Again Green Ranger.

I know power rangers is based off of super Sentai but I do want to share something I'm 22 years old and power rangers got me through my childhood I was getting bullied at school my parents got divorced and in the midst of all of that I discovered power rangers it gave me a beacon of Hope taught me to be strong and dispatch my angels and shoot the darkness up so I'm thankful for super Sentai without it I would not have power rangers to get me through the dark times in my life

I really wish the main plot started before episode 17. I believe "Beware of Shaved Ice" is written by Toshiki Inoue and directed by Keita Amemiya. It couldn't go wrong at all with those two.

Looking back... honestly, if I'm going to be honest, I don't really like Dai-Satan as the final villain. If anything... DAIZYUJIN fits better.
Like, Daizyujin has a lot of questionable actions. More than I can count. With the most notorious ones being only needing Burai for Ultimate Daizyujin, and taking away the Dino Bucklers during the Burai death arc.
Say what one will about MMPR, but Zordon is easily the better mentor.

Haim Saban tried for years to get super sentai adapted for American audience he kept on pitching it to tv networks and they all thought it was the worst thing they ever seen they were like combining Japanese footage with American footage is stupid this idea could never work. You know I respect that mmpr was the first power rangers season and without it we win have all the other ones including one of my favorite I also respect what it started the first year of American toku with all that being said yeah I really don't like it it is way too cheesy for me the effects are terrible at have aged poorly and the characters we're all bland yeah that's basically my opinion on it
Some of the effects I can agree on, but for the most part, I'll take the effects in Zyuranger over anything released in the last ten years. Too much CGI these days.

I love the battle royale aspect of the show and the story complements it pretty well but I have to negatives with this show the first deals with the effects most notably the cgi the way the monsters are animated in this show is just so bad and the green screen in this show is also pretty bad as well as for the second negative (this one is small so it's not that big of a deal) is the lack of appearances of previous riders mostly from the showa era as it would've been cool to see them help shinji kido.
