Hi hy 😍💐 it is good to see you again! I hope that you are doing well 🫶🏼 thank you so much for your feedback on this video, I appreciate it very much and thank you for watching 🤗 they can be stinky orchids for sure, but considering there are so many others that do have a nice fragrance with super interesting blooms, if my conditions were more favorable, there would be a lot more of these in my collection. 😃 Have a great Easter, if you celebrate! If not, have yourself a great weekend 👍🏼👍🏼🌸

Anna-Karin 😍 hi! 💐 thank YOU for watching and your feedback, I appreciate it very much. Truly a fabulous ride, researching this genus to the fullest degree! It is so unique, weird... and incredibly well evolved. I wish that, back when I was building this collection, that I could have gone ahead and made this genus my first and foremost, but... realization hit when Elizabeth Ann joined the collection and to this day, I have only bloomed her once and am still making sure that she will grow better. Not so easy when conditions are not within the parameters. 😬 enjoy your bulbos!! I hope you had a fabulous day 🥰🌸

HI Michelle 😍💐 its so good to see you!! They really are in a league of their own. And, the experts have tried to reclassify some of them because the genus is soooo vast, and yet they can't (just yet) because they keep coming back to the same conclusion, a bulbo is a bulbo is a bulbo 😅 no strawberries on your lasciochilum? Ooohh, I hope that that will change someday, because a bulbo that smells like strawberries would be fabulous, imo! Thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I so appreciate you being here and hope your day is nothing short of beautiful 🥰🌸

Hi Nina, I just got around to commenting to this video, I’m absolutely loving the care cards and extensive information! You might only have 4 bulbophyllum, but they look pristine and spotless, so gorgeous! There are some bulbo’s that really need a lot lower light than others, so if you are worried about the light situation you should look into those! Most of those are small as well, so well suited for your micro climates.
I do have a few questions if that is ok?:
    - You say to flush after every feeding, and to feed with every watering. But my bulbo’s are bought from a nursery that grows them on spaghnum packed cage mounts. So they are wire folded into a 1 inch thick rectangle, tightly packed with spaghnum. The bulbo’s grow amazingly on these and most look very happy, but flushing them means completely drenching them and that is way too wet to do daily or maybe even weekly. I have been feeding them with their daily watering with rainmix at 160ppm, so I should for sure reduce that for most of them, thank you for including ppm, that is sooo useful! (I’m not adjusting PH yet, still waiting for my PH meter)
    - You didn’t have carecards for all of mine and some I have are hybrids, so is there a way to find out which ppm level I should give mine (or any new ones) not covered by the care cards? I wouldn’t dare request additional care cards as they are so much work 🫣 but so so useful. I’ve got a bunch printed out that I use all the time!
    - Another question about flushing would be how to handle that in winter, especially for species that like to go a bit drier. Some don’t fully stop growing in winter for a rest so they do need some fertilizer.
    - Troubleshooting: two of my bulbo’s have developed thinner leaves than they used to have, on one (dearii) they are really papery and thinner than they where when I got them. On the other (mastersianum) they are still thick but noticeably softer and more floppy than on the older bulbs. I’m thinking this might be similar to phals where floppy leaves are a sign of trouble, and I’d love to know my options.
    - Troubleshooting. The mastersianum is also pulling resources out of its oldest leaf and it is yellowing. It is in active growth on a new bulb and roots, but it seems to be relocating resources? Or do you think something else might be going on?
    - Info: All the other ones are growing well and looking good. (I have 8 bulbo’s total, and more on the way as we speak) growing indoor at 18-27°C in the current season, but these nights most nights the temperature doesn’t even drop below 20°C. A recent light upgrade for about 10.000 lux, humidity that is usually in 50-65% this season but still drops into the 40’s sometimes when the humidifier can’t keep up. (I manage to pump the humidity on those nights to around 60% so they can catch up). I feed rainmix at 160ppm (will reduce to 100) with their spray every morning (I mix once every 2-3 days) and since it says no flushes needed on the rainmix pot (and is a hassle with the cagemounts) I haven’t been doing that. I found they like to be a little wetter than I thought would be correct with “moist” but they might be compensating that way for the lower humidity. There is a fan going next to their grow board for airflow but don’t know how to measure if it is enough as they have thick leaves that don’t move. With the current season I open the door and window on most days in the living room for fresh air. No pests (although some fungus gnats might be present I haven’t found any larvae), recently had preventative treatment with garlic alcohol.
And a few notes that perhaps are of interest for you and readers:
    - Some bulbo’s grow flowers from the base of the bulb, others flower along the rhizome.
    - Some species like the popular bulbo. Ambrosia need a winter period of colder temperatures to flower well. Many growers that had trouble flowering theirs reported good results with this!
    - Some species, like the african bulbo. Saltatorium need a drier than a little drier winter rest to produce flowers well. Looking at the climate they come from it makes sense they’d need to dry out more.
    - A few more good smelling bulbophyllum: Tingabarinum/pecten-veneris (like cilantro and/or carrots), Elassonotum (like pinapple), cocoinum (like coconut), Vaginatum (citrus, almost lemony, light and very pleasant), Picturatum (watermelon), Laxiflorum (mild, sweet, and a little musky)
Again, wonderful video! I love learning more about bulbophyllum from you. There are so many things still difficult to find info about about these orchids, such as the different types of flowering, some have very different ways of growing roots (I haven’t found much info on that at all!), some even seem to grow pendulous? There is one (bulbo. Sesille) that seems common in vendors in my country (NL) but it grows so radically different from the others I know…
Very exciting genus to get into, and I’ve found that their care requirements sound scary but they are actually really easy and tolerant orchids! I haven’t lost a single one even with suboptimal humidity and light for a few months back in winter, and clearly I have been overfeeding and not flushing enough. I highly recommend anyone even slightly interested to just give bulbo’s a try!
Thanks again so much for reading my book and questions, Nina ♥️🧡💛

Hi Blais 😍💐 1.) as your bulbos are in sphagnum moss mounts, gravity will pull the water down to the lower part of the mount, and that could be your focus to pour plain water every once in a while. You can also reduce the fertilizer, but if your bulbos are happy with what you are giving them, then at least once a week, just use plain water. This way, they will always get what they are used to and a flush as well. Keep in mind how quickly sphagnum moss can degrade as it is damp all the time. If you can, the occasional plain water application is advisable so that the moss stays fresher and doesn't compact and load up with minerals, the majority of which will be at the bottom of the mount.
2.) Follow the CareCard recommendations for the bulbos in your collection that match the size of those I have in the CareCards. That will give you the base line, and then you can see how your's perform based on the base line and can adjust accordingly. When it comes to hybrids, the only difference would be to check what temperature tolerance both parents have. This way you can dial in what the ideal temperature would be for your hybrid. Fertilizing would be according to the size.
3.) Winter flushing should be taken into consideration a little more than during the summer, because, as your media needs to go a little drier, any unabsorbed fertilizer will accumulate in the media as salts, which in turn will burn the fussy bulbo roots. So, while the bulbo may still be in active growth but needs to be on the drier end of damp, the roots need to be protected and the focus should be on their health as opposed to trying to push a new growth to size. UNLESS, you have a hybrid that does what it does, that does not need drier media during the winter, and grows vigorously no matter the time of year.
4.) Thinner leaves on bulbos usually is a sign of acclimating. Stress due to change of environment and getting settled in. OR, as they size increases, the fertilizer needs to be adjusted to accommodate all the structures, as well as the new growth. Maybe, take those bulbos and give them some Calcium nitrate only, on the odd occasion to get more calcium into the newer structures. With the floppy leaves, that could be a sign that there are problems with the root system. Not knowing how long you have had the bulbo with the floppy leaves, but spahgnum moss will degrade within 6 months, because it has to be constantly damp, after 8 months it becomes acidic and the pH adjusting can be done up to 12 months of the moss as media, but then it is high noon to change the moss out, because the roots will suffocate as the moss compacts. ua-cam.com/video/WlGux2za9wE/v-deo.html Sphagnum Moss MasterClass video if you would like to have a look / listen 👍🏼
5.) Relocating resources. But, now you know that your mastersianum needs more fertilizer when in active growth, so that it does not repeat that stunt the next time around. It would be too late for the structure that is being absorbed now, but for future reference. Also, keep in mind, if the bulb is not soft, or looking unsightly with some form of mold around it, then its being absorbed. If it is soft, the cut the rhizome where that bulb is and get rid of it.
Airflow is enough as long as the air is moving, you do not need to see the leaves flutter or move 👍🏼
      Regarding your notes:
The CareCards show where the spikes form because that is a really cool characteristic of the different bulbos 👍🏼
Thank you for the heads up on the ambrosia & saltatorium blooming recommendation tips 👍🏼
I tried to pick bulbos that have pleasant fragrances, and described the fragrances in the CareCards, but... of course, you cannot do a bulbo Care Video without a few smelly ones in the mix. I mean, after all, that is their reputation and I wanted to ensure that the stunning bloom does not make it a must have orchid, without knowing what the purchaser of said bulbo is in for! 😂
A question I have for you, ... have you asked your bulbo supplier the questions you had and if so, what have they told you? Just out of curiosity 😆 thank YOU so much for watching and for being here! I hope that my answers were of help, and thank you for reading my novel 🙏🏼🫶🏼❤️🌸

🦇😍💐 good evening!! Well, good afternoon 🫣 no! Don't touch face! COLD hands 🥶😠 I would have loved to have had the majority of my collection be bulbos, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Love them, but I cannot do stinky! Even a coelogyne pandurata is intense in the fragrance, which isn't quite stinky, but dusty stale...not really my cup of tea! Meanwhile, I have not had to worry about that in the past 2 years, because she isn't blooming due to lack of light. But she is alive 😅 hope I don't jinx that now. Getting discounted orchids because a tag is missing, sounds like nirvana to me! Here, they stuff another tag into the pot and then .... yeah! No prizes for guessing what happens next. That is how I got my coilostylis ciliare var. oerstedii. I wanted a cattleya, and I got that instead. Meanwhile, the growth habit already tells you it is not a cattleya 🤪 but hey, I like coilostylis so, no harm no foul. But I did not get a refund either. Really appreciate you watching / listening, Robert, and thank you so much for your feedback. I feel as though I am now 'in the know' about bulbos!! 😅 hope your day is going great!! Thank you so much for being here ❤️🌸

Well, now I understand why it took a while to get the video out. Even though I hate Bulbos, I'll say you did a great job on the deep dive. I know, Bulbos are a diverse group and I shouldn't discount them all but there just isn't even one I have seen that interests me at all.
In other news, I've been trying to candle the latest growth on my Cattleya cernua aurea and I can see something in there. I'm hoping for a bud (or buds) but it fooled me before by growing a growth with two leaves. Given the growth rate, I'm thinking it is more likely bud than leaf but only time will tell. So I'm impatiently waiting on that leaf to open to find out what is in there.

There are so many layers in this video. If it were the filming only... I wonder why I make it so complicated for myself. But, it is one of the character traits that has always either bugged me, or propelled me 😆 sometimes I can't stand being like 'that' but if I don't listen to my inner voice, and plans and execute them to the best of my ability with the tools I have available, then I can't stand myself either, sooooo 🤪 I love bulbos, and wish I could grow more, but the plumatum from MattbyNature, that was a surprise... I saw your video on bulbophyllums it was great but I have a bulbo that I have had since year 2021 and I still can't find good information on it. My leaves have dark green lines length ways with short lines the width way. If the light is more than phalaenopsis light the leaves turn yellow. This has been happening since I got it. This is how I keep it. Low light grow light , grows in moss moist, temperatures winter is high 60s to 70s summer high 70s to 80s, humidity 68 to 90 ,. Here is the name of the orchid. Bulbophyllum binnendijkii Sarawak × lasianthum. There it is .I hope you can find info on it good luck and thank you. Have a great day 😊

      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +4

HI Donna 🤩💐 thank you so much for watching the video, I really appreciate it! The Care Card for Bulbophyllum ericssonii is the one you need to double check on, because B. binnendijkii is a synonym for ericssonii, or visa versa. So, what you are telling me brings me to the conclusion that the binnendijkii parent is more predominant in this hybrid, than lasianthum. When I read your second comment, about the leaves curling under, my first thought is, the orchid is being exposed to too cold temperatures. When I went to check my care cards and came across the ericssonii and binnendijkii are the same, the temperatures that I recommend for this orchid are higher than what you are providing. The other parent, although not in my care cards, is also a warm to 'cool' growing orchid, but the binnendijkii does not appreciate the cool part. The markings, I would have to see in images, so feel free to send me an email ninjaorchids@gmail.com so that I can have a closer look. I can picture what you are describing, because it is very detailed, but would prefer to have a look. Also, please let me know how long you have had the orchid. Thank you! As you have not mentioned any pests, which could be another reason for discoloration or leaf curling, I am going with temperature for that one. Hope this helps, somewhat, and I look forward to your email 🤗🌸

I have just purchased two Bulbophyllum Medusae (if that is how you spell it). I'm so excited! So thank you for this wonderful video. I'm sharing to it fb. I also just got an absolute dream plant, Cattleya Bow Bells 'Purity. I lost an auction on ebay for one a month ago and was beside myself. At the same time that I was introduced to this rare beauty, a stark white homeless and deaf cat was showing up at my house and I wanted to trap/spay her and bring her in. She proved to be elusive and I lost the auction. Now, I've got her used to eating here and she is ready to be trapped, so I thought, hmmm. Is there another white elusive thing that I want so badly? Yes, the bow bells. I went back on and found a larger and more expensive one and got it! Now I'm going to have both little white beauties! And I send blessings to you. You are such a treasure to me!
