  • Class discussion of the 'Bhagavad-gita,' particularly of the role of dharma and Krishna as avatar of Vishnu.
Whenever I post a video on this text, it generates a lot of comments. I welcome such comments if they are constructive. I am happy to answer any questions about the sources I used in preparing for this lecture. I would also ask that you be aware of the context for the video before you post - this is for a World Literature course for second-year undergraduates at a small public university in the rural southeastern US, most of whom have little to no experience with Hinduism or with Indian history or culture more broadly. They have also only read a few excerpts from Chapters 1-3, 6, and 11. As such, some simplification of concepts is necessary.

    1. First birth -when you born
    2. Second birth - when you take knowledge from guru/master
From first birth every is shudra
But after second birth each one get own varna according to thier knowledge
    Varna ( khastriya , vaisya , bharamin )

Additionally, in the vedas and Gita, caste was used to determine your duty by your aptitude or what you were good at. Never by birth and untouchables was never a concept. That was a convoluted concept much later on in history. And no, foreigners are not classified as Dalits.

The word caste being translated here is actually misinterpreted by the instructor, its similar to other words like " dharma". Caste systems are not birth related social order as its presumed but work related. Earlier, society was divided into 4 basic castes based on their work and no single person cannot belong to more than 1 caste at any point of time. However, the children of particular caste acquire the same caste as they learn about it from their parents. example- brahmins: learned scholar, could also work as teacher, advisor, priest, saints, seers etc; Khatriya: security experts, can become ruler, kings, soldiers and gaurds etc; Vaishya: Business people, profession includes business men, trading, shopkeepers etc; Shudra: experts in farming, ironsmith, fishing and other work related profession. This profession related social order got converted into birth related in recent 500-700 years history. Similar confusion is also about the word Dharma which loosely translates as religion but its actually refers to duty for example the dharma of a tiger when its hungry is hunt, kill and eat.
What Krishna was worried about at 14.30 was if Arjuna didnt fight, he is demeaning the khatriya dharma [ his caste's sole duty] and if he didnt follow his duty then the society structure would break and would lead to fall of civilization.
I would like to point out that sanskrit as a language has 1000 (not exact) times more vocabulary than english language so meanings usually get lost in translation. Its always better to have true knowledge rather wrong knowledge. And these Vedas, Upanisads, Mahabharat, Gita, Ramayana and other books are not so easy to interpret even for Indians so people prefer to understand from any learned (sanskrit) guru first and then debate and research helps to refine the understanding. So I would request to please clarify the knowledge with any person ( indian or non indian) who has studied sanskrit to get the truth.

caste system does not determine moksha. we forget that chandaleshwara was a shudra, krishna was a kshatriya, rama was a kshatriya, buddha was a kshatriya and all have been said to have attained perfection. the first thing would be to get your heads straight about this-in hindu religion, the atman of all is the same. there is no shudra, vaishya, kshatriya, brahmana. they all apply to societal arrangements. the saints could come from any jati. in fact, there is a saying in many languages of India-dont look for the origins of a river or a saint.

I really enjoyed your video and the deep dive into the Bhagavad Gita. I'm sorry you've received so much hate from people who actually haven't read the text (because if they had, they'd not be so certain that what they believe is the Truth). I think the depth you bring to a 50-minute lecture is truly astounding, because there are so many dilemmas wrapped up in the text, and you've pretty much broad-stroked the history of Hinduism while explaining (like you rightly mentioned) a friggin huge text. If you're still reading the comment section, here's letting you know that not all of us feel the way some of these people have attacked you.

He doesn't know about Upanishads that actually preach same things as Gita but at around 900 BC (the oldest one Chandogya and Brihadaranyaka), Upanishads are written after Veda and are called Vedanta. Buddhism and Jainism took things both from Vedas and these early Upanishads but all school of thoughts in Hinduism were independent, so Buddha or Mahavir or any other guru could have taught whatever makes sens for him

***Britisher colonist missionary created Caste System*** (Casta word in Spanish/ Portuguese has been used as a racial), which was a doctrine part of the divide rule in INDIA. In Hindu Santana Dharma work divide system called as Varna system “वर्ण व्यवस्था” (CASTE NAMED was NOT in the HINDU Santana Vedic dharma text scriptures). Hindu Vedic dharma text scriptures called as varna system which was NOT on the basis of birth but on the basis of KARMA (person's actions). According to Hindu scriptures, the society has been given stability by the work of four varnas - Brahman (work related to education), Kshatriya (protection from enemies), Vaishya (commerce) and Shudra (industry and art). Each person first born in Shudra Varna and then after him/her knowledge go to the next level, even 1st class to the degree of master. If you, born in the Brahman family, are free to choose, you can go work on the Shudra family to become Shudra same if you were born in Shudra you can go to Brahman Varna as the Valmiki Shudra family wrote Ramayana. Britisher missionary created Caste System to divide rule millions of people and looted 45 Trillion from Bharat.

It's not called "Caste System" sir... It's called Varna System...And Varna System was more like a division of labour that later turned into "Caste System" due to Brahmins who would turn arrogant towards others and wanted to show their superiority in the society as in the ancient times, Brahmin was known to be the first among the other classes...
They wanted to belittle others and show their superiority in the society which is why they started spreading lies and would refrain others from getting knowledge from the Vedas etc...So they wrote Manusmriti and asked people to follow it... Manusmriti turned Varna System into Caste System...
In Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says Varna System should be defined accordingly by a person's mode of nature...That is each person has a specific talent...Some can be artists, some can be businessmen or traders, some can be teachers and gurus, so these classes will define their potentials...What they can do! It has never been mentioned from the Bhagavad Gita that a person should be following caste system that is to make discrimination and treat others poorly because they belong from the lower class...
And nowhere has Krishna ever mentioned that Caste System should be practised by birth.... It's not by birth, it's by a person's mode of nature...Whatever they want to do or become or what they are good at doing...

You must have heard of the word "Karma". Well "Karma" is the consequences of "Dharma", which is based on your "Varna" (NOT Caste by Birth & are fluid based on the role you are playing).
For example, when you go to buy a shirt (car oil change) & the shopkeeper (Vaishya) try to sells you pants, tie, belt, jacket, sox, shoes along with Shirt. It is a Vaishya's Dharma is to sell you more. However, a Doctor/Healthcare professional/Vaidya/Teacher/Guru is a Brahmin. And, a Brahmin's Dharma is to save life & server humanity by his/her knowledge and cannot exploit any human, or in this example try to sell a patient more medications or unnecessary medical procedures. A soldier/police/politician/fireman/warrior must follow his/her Kshatriya Dharma of providing protection to ALL fellow citizens, and cannot be biased based on Race, Religion, Class, Gender, etc. An artist/craftman/smith/etc. must be a good Sudra/citizen and produce goods and services for the nation.
All the Dharmic religion: Hindu/Buddhist/Jain/Sikh/Surya scriptures contains Varna.
"Discrimination" is "A-0harma", The scriptures states that if you hurt anyone or even kill an ant, you will have to take birth in that yoni (species 8.4 million) and pay your debt.

A few things: Kauravas were paternal cousins. Krishna himself is a maternal cousin of the Pandavas. The Mahabharata occurred at least 5000 years back at least so timing wise it would have been around 3000 BCE. This is a Westernized influence on the historical timings which is incorrect. Rigveda is much older than that. Hinduism is actually more than 10000 years old but West doesn't want to accept it. There were only Varnas no caste system as we know it today. There were no Dalits or untouchables at.that time. Overall though for a newcomer this was a good intro

"Brahman" had only knowledge & no wealth( not even permanent house, not even a bed sleep on carpet, not even more than 2 cloths) can not horde any kind of wealth, no power BUT lives(RUNS THEIR FAMILY, WIFE, KIDS) on donation/bhiksha/daan by all other VARNAS/casts (teachers, scientist, doctors, engineers, diplomats, intellectuals, policy makers, makes laws, gurus , architect, teaching every skill, yogis,,). THEIR DHARMA is to teach KNOWLEDGE/SCIENCE to all peoples without charging them anything for it.
"Kshatriyas" had power but not property & not make govt. policy/laws/taxes ( mostly r foot soldiers gets 1 time salary in month or year, very less r administrators, very less king, very less nobles). lives a very short life mostly lives till 20, 30, 35 yrs. THEIR DHARMA is to protect all peoples against any kind of atrocity.
"Vaishyas" had money/property , but they r respected only if they do philanthropy ( merchants, craftsman, farmers, jewellers, milkman, shopkeeper, musician, dancer, painters, fisherman, washerman, tailor, any kind of skilled labour & business) all Profesional people. THEIR DHARMA is to produce necessary things for consumption of all peoples.
"Sudras" were all General/rural/forest people (unskilled labour/not interested in studying, hard labourer/messengers/ construction workers/ shepherd, DAILY WAGE LABOURERS, low iq people/not educated,). THEIR DHARMA is to do what ever UNSKILLED work/task given to them, IF THEY R IN SERVICE UNDER A ADMINISTRATOR/VAISHYAS/PROJECT/TASK
ITS NOT BIRTH BASED but KARMA/choice/GUNA's/interest/work BASED, ACCORDING TO VEDAS. in rigveda there is a mantra where a person is saying that all his family members of 4 people belong to different VARNAS & lives in complete harmony under the same roof with each other.
MODERN DAY CASTE SYSTEM IN HINDUS (including dalits/untouchables/shudras) have a lot of thing to do :
    1. because of 1000 yrs of muslim invasion/ genocide/ plunder/ destruction of hindu institutions, setups & systems/ cruelty/ loot/ barbarism, forced feeding cow meat/ forced people to chop off cows & forced cobblers to work on cow skin, forced conversion techniques, denigrating all cast hindus, outcast hindus(of all cast) by forcing them to do most unholy things according to hindu dharma so that they converts into islam (Like marrying them forcely between cousin brother sisters like muslim does normally which is most unholy in hindus,
& also Like killing cows through hands of hindu males, then forced their females to cook that cow meat, then forced everybody to eat it which is most unholy thing in hinduism).
    2. also the 200yrs of british rule by "divide & rule" policy , they drafted/created/lured/incentivize people discriminating on cast. they r the 1st people in india who arranged >5000 cast according to their(british) perception of hierarchy of indian casts in their british system, which was later after their ~100 yrs rule on that policy becomes a habit in india & which is also inherited by india when it got freedom from british colonial power.

There’s lotta misinterpretation of what a caste system is. Society was divided into 4 parts Brahmins(teachers), kchatriyas, (worriers and managers)vaishyas,(Merchants and entrepreneurs)Sudras,(Farmers, tradesmen’s,and labors) They are all equally important in the society but our Brahmins Who were very smart and cunning in politics and the most important part of the society because they were the teachers and the instructors of the Society … have twisted the meaning of the 4 structure of the society and set some rules and turned it into a caste system So it favors them the most In this Hindu caste Structure…very short explanation in a nutshell!

Even the Bhagwat Geeta was Written or compiled by Maharishi Vyas who was a son of Fisherwoman which is Shudra. Brahmana means the knowledgeable one, anybody who has a knowledge is Brahman. I'm adding a link for your reference about the Vyasa

You are more closer to truth in traditional sense than many common hindus. People are a little averse to Casteism and caste by birth. But that is the right understanding according to traditional scriptures. All the scriptures and bhashyams(commentaries) will agree to caste by birth. A brahmin can be born as shudra in his next birth or outcaste(i.e what you call as dalit here) or even as a foreigner(i.e. mlechha who cannot understand truth or with no access to truth). It happens when that Brahmin might have committed a mistake or error, which is the case of Nandanar who was a Brahmin in his previous birth but showed unnecessary wrath on shudra working for him. Even if castes as mentioned in Vedas is completely removed (because many believe it leads to inequality), the law of karma will be perfectly fine as it will maintain inequality by other means like money, status etc. Inequality will always exist, infact the right understanding of scriptures is inequality will only increase without varnashrama which is what Kaliyuga is about. So casteism is a necessary inequality(evil) accpeted as divine ordinance to keep the inequality under check. So accordingly 4 resources -Knowledge(Brahmins), Power(Kshatriya), Wealth(Vaisya), Human Resources(Shudras) were divided so that everyone is kept interdependent and the inequality never goes out of hand. Anyways, at a particular state of evolution of jiva caste becomes irrelevant and at that point, you may or may not abide by rules of casteism. This state is below the state of enlightenment(jivanmukta) and devatas will interfere directly in such a man's life and ask him to leave casteism out(there were many stories of this in past atleast till 16th century, but as such evolved men aren't to be found now, Devatas don't interfere, even to witness a devata's miracle we need punya and most of us don't have it). Understanding casteism(by birth) is extremely difficult and can be understood thoroughly by a man of detachment without having an iota of sympathy(that doesn't mean he wont help others in need, just that the feeling of pity would be absent). Sympathy may be a divine emotion in beginning but is an impediment to spiritual progress. An Gnani will not even blink an eye when the most gruesome crime happens in front of his eyes as he knows the world to be unreal, in that sense casteism is also unreal. But casteism is real as long as we feel this is real world, even though some evolved souls speak against it. A Gnani or evolved jiva can be found in any jati. The word jati itself means by birth. Every jati belongs to a particular varna. As many may not receive the knowledge of Vedas if too much importance is given to casteism, some reject the idea of caste. So men like Swami Vivekananda speak against casteism just to take the knowledge of Advaita to the masses. But that deosn't mean casteism by birth of Vedas is wrong. It just means for his followers casteism was too risky a pill to digest. The situation in which a man is born into.. his caste, his father, his lineage, his village , his surrounding etc. are all an effect of his previous karma. If a man finds himself in the presence of an enlightened man it is the effect of his previous karma, even an exposure to these teaching, even if you dont believe in it is a previous karma. Again previous karma can be modified by free will of current birth so...shudra can be born as a brahmin. The animal births are punishments for previous wrong karmas. If you do a grave mistake there will be punishments in hell before being born as an animal or as an outcaste etc. Finally Devas(like Shiva, Vishnu), rishis etc are just jivas like humans, cows, dogs etc. Karma affects even Gods or Devas. Among gods six divities(shanmatha gods) are enlightened. Like humans varnas(castes) exist for these Gods too, but the difference being. For Gods the karmas(their duties) and their purpose of birth is simultaneous when creation happened and hence the varnas for Gods are according to the actions they perform. Many take these verses and believe that even for humans the varnas are to be decided by actions. Finally the only thing unaffected by all these things is Brahman...... PS I listened to this videos of your by chance and that too only for 10 mins by skipping pieces. Wrote this long comment because I felt like it...

I forgot to mention that the above understanding was the common understanding in all Pagan traditions, they all had caste system by birth, they all worshipped devatas, they all believed in immortality of souls etc. Basically the Vedic tradition existed all over the globe, now it exists only in India to very limited extent as original understanding exists only with a few who still goto gurukulas or those who have reached out to learn from traditional sources. The family names like Smith, Blackwood, Knight or Noble families are remnants of once previously followed casteism in other parts of world.

There are several flaws in the teaching here. Bhagwat geeta was written way before buddhism and jainism were born. When it was written, it was not in competition with buddhism and jainism at all. Then why are you saying what krishna says in geeta is an effect of competetion with buddhism and jainism.
Next, the first student asked a great question. But it was not explained right. Hindusim does not teach giving up desires. Hindusim is all about yoga( yoga of action, meditation, etc..) and yoga means union. Union means adding something to something not removing. Hence hinduism does not teach giving up or removing desires from life.
Next, stop comparing sanatana dharma to greek and roman religions. Dont make these religions as a baseline to explain things in sanatana dharma please. If you can, please provide fresh perspective to students.

Vedic and Gita mentioned Varna and Jati are different to the corrupted system practiced later on and now! The Varna is related to the occupation one ends up with by one's talent and innateness! There was a free flow of the system that got corrupted afterwards in the civilisation. Class systems of the West is also somewhat alike the Varna concepts. Even today there are Royals, Barons and Lords alike! Bhagavad Gita is not written as a reaction to Buddhism or Jainism which were newer religions to Gita, which was written long before! In regards to Dharma, we can see it even now in most societies! If one is a soldier, his job is to fight, when ordered, and if he refuses, he will be court-martialled! If your a Hangman your job is to hang the convicts and that is his Dharma!

There is no Trinity ..People can't understand it. Vishnu means one who is present everywhere. So Vishnu is the supreme god who does everything. He is in every soul and material but he is not those souls and material. so he does all works through us. It's not that easy to understand using English translation.

hello friends. I believe that Brahman don't go away after creation but reside within the creation as entity of time. his creation is called brahmaic which consist of past present and future. visnu is reside in each building block of the fundamental element as he be the material for the creation of Brahman. Siva is the ultimate god for soul and the Atman is part of the soul. Brahman and visnu also part of this soul. visnu be material for this universe which makes the universe Maya/illusion so that the soul can experience something like real. Brahmaic in this illusion will paused if Brahman went out. so all this three divine entity is always within us all time. i believe Brahman 4 head is symbolic but describing 4 corners within the universe where the time is same to Brahman. nobody able to contact or see Brahman in this illusionary universe because of its nature we can't be in the all places at once and the time is paused if we can do so. but it maybe possible spiritually. mostly my opinion since I'm a seeker for god too. thank you.

Bhagwat Geeta is a message of Krishna and there is no mention of any caste system in the scriptures..
Caste system is recorded in one of the vedas but the actual meaning of the caste or jaati during that time has nothing to do with birth but caste was decided by karma or by your actions.. During that period caste system was not like today's. Today's prevailing caste system in India is fucked up and has nothing to do with religion...

Can you name one Pope of Hinduism? Or the name of a Hindu Caliphate?
The word "Casta" was coined by the Portuguese missionary and exploited by the British by showing them a fictitious "Pyramid" with Bhraman (Priest) on top, Kshatriya (Warriors) below them, Vaisyas (Businessmen) below them, Sudras (Craftsmen workers) lowest. First of all, no powerful Kings/warriors, rich Businessman, or a famous successful Sudra would ever bend their knees to a Bhraman. They would invite Bhramans, feed them, honor them and do Yagyas, but never have kept them above them. In fact, as soon as a knowledgeable Rishi, Muni, Bhraman have realized the presence of Bhramha, forces of the universe, they have retreated to forest away from towns to meditate to connect to these forces. ALL Children until they graduate and start working and get married are called "Brahmachari" and are "Brahmins", and their Dharma is to intellectually study and gain knowledge to serve all humanity. Based on Rig Veda, every Purusha (Men/Women) Head where all the intellectual thinking and speaking happens is Bhraman, Hands act as defense and doing things to earn are Kshatriya, Torso where all the systems and processes are happening are Vaishya, Legs are responsible to take forward in good direction the entire body are Sudra.
The invaders then added "Dalits", "Untouchables" for those who don't convert give them low jobs like cleaning their shit. You will not find words like "Untouchable" or "Dalits", "Bastard", "Divorce", in any of the Vedic Scriptures.
Untouchables in Bible: LEVITICUS 12:1-3 and 15:4-12: ...if you touch a ceremonially unclean man/woman you will have to wash...break vessels touched by the unclean person...

Sir... I am a ph. D scholar interested in this area. I have the texts, with me if you want them. Please see to it... Originally there we're only three castes brahmins, kshatriya and vaishya. Later there is added a fourth one shudra. Fifth part came later ati shudra, untouchables, dalits. Now according to this...there are four different origins of men in Rigveda...mouth, arms, thighs, and feet of bramh...making men into brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishya and Shudras. Brahmins are told living God's here, highest in social and religious status and khshatriyas are 2nd,vaishya 3rd into the rank. Shudra are the lowest in the cast hierarchy. The caste system does give enormous rights to the above three cates but Shudra have been facing the atrocities from the time these things called scriptures were written. Redemption is only for the above three castes and for shudras there are only punishments because they are born shudras. There is nothing in this world that can change the caste so every unit is stagnant in itself. There was a law that permitted chage of religion so that one could go to any other religion like Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam which offer only one origin and equal status atleast on religious and social level promoting equality to humans, seeing men as humans not high and low. That law has been change now and again redemption is only for the above three castes. Sir you want to know anything about scripture Geeta and Manusmriti... Please ask me.. I will be obliged.

    • @ragas93
      @ragas93 2 роки тому +4

If you are a phd scholar, then you have a very bad knowledge about what you are talking about. I'm a student of sociology and sociologist agree that caste system is not a rigid system. The movement among different castes was quite common. Different castes rose and fell in their statuses. Srikrishna Devaraya (very renowned king in south India) was a Vaishya. Shatavahana Dynasty kings were Brahmins. Infact, Manusmriti talks about Sudra kings too. Also, Manusmriti is only one of the many Hinu Dharmashastras that existed in the length and breadth of Indian subcontinent. It was the British who took Manusmriti as the one and only Hindu law code and applied it to all Hindus across the subcontinent. Now, I really doubt your phd credentials.
