I've been preaching this for years and finally my commute has been trying to do this .

As a traffic controller, knowing how people drive in America and knowing that this won't *actually* work out in the way it's intended only serving to cause road rage wrecks at the start of my buffer - please don't.

Intuitively this is true because, imagine there are 50 cars in the left lane and 50 in the right. What matters is that stops are minimized aka speed is maintained. If the car at the front tries to merge in at an unexpected spot, in practice this means 49 right lane cars behind are braking and say 25 left lane cars are braking. In theory, if there was plenty of space between cars in the left lane, sure you can just move in and everyone maintains speed, but this is not the case in reality.

Please make another video demonstrating how this is faster (eg the 2 behaviours compared side by side, demonstrating increased throughput, average speeds in both lanes) as this video concentrated on PSAs and telling us the public they are misinformed.

Hmm, may I ask how doing zipper merge 50 meters before the line ends makes it worse than doing the same thing at the end of the lane? 🤷

Because when you do it 50 meters early you're basically making the lane closure 50 meters longer than it is

They do this in New York City a lot more I’ve noticed. I’ll admit I’d never heard of it until my grandpa actually took me to the city when I was about eight and explained it to me. I’d since forgotten about it though until now. I’ll try to stick to it moving forward I hate bad drivers thanks for the reminder!

Every week I go past a merged road, and EVERYONE merges as soon as they can and almost drive over the pedestrian island, when they have 1/2 mile to merge or, as you said, merge at the end

The creator doesn't point out why people are hesitant to leave merging to a last possible moment.
The left lane will not let you in and you're forced to come to a full stop making it even harder to merge.
Many drivers in us are imigrants and first generation drivers.
Too many and diferent or no driving cultures are a problem.
Go to india see how they drive there!
Driving in 5 lines over a 3 lane road all cars present honking at the same time
Thats THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF CARS HONKING AT THE SAME TIME
I know you dont believe me but it's true.
The DMV can't afford not to issue drivers licences because no driving no going to work no economy no country

Zipper Merging fails mainly because people are either:
    1) Kind or Cautious, and defer to other drivers to avoid danger and rage
    2) Äzzholes
If you don't get over early, there's a very strong chance they won't let you over later, as they assume you're a selfish prick and have an "every man for himself", "dog eat dog" mentality on the road. The slowdown and difficulty getting in tend to be worse when you DO try to zip merge because the lane that remains is filled with people who feel entitled not to let you in. Forcing your way in is nerve-wracking and dangerous.
The only solution I can think of is that drivers in the main lane MUST, by law, each let one car in front of them, if a car is available in the lane that is disappearing.

IT will NEVER work. PPL are not robots, they don't behave logiacaly. In reality merging lanes just creates worse traffic, because ppl don't take turns, they don't merge safely and force ppl behind to break or stop. In that case a single lane would just be faster. Imagine having two lanes to the same cashier in the store? Good luck explaining that one to ppl. We have to stop basing traffic planning on simulations that need perfect execution and start basing in on human behaviour.
