I wish that we had better recording technology back then, because this is an unbelievably incredible performance. Obviously its the composer conducting, so he knows exactly what it should sound like, but my god, this is the best performance I've ever heard of it. The harmonies and moments that fall flat in other recordings are brought out here. Unbelievable.

A historic performance & the recording of a great composition by the composer himself.
Humble tributes to Herr Richard Strauss on the occasion of his 159th birth anniversary today.

Whoosh-What a performance! First time I’ve heard Strauss conduct himself, and the recording was so masterfully produced (and re-mastered?). Took my breath away, thank you so much for sharing!

Strauss made a number of high fidelity recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1944, using the Magnetophon tape recording system. These are amazing performances that were part of the 80th birthday celebrations for the composer. By the way, we now know that he was anti-Nazi and his son actually married a Jewish woman; Strauss had to do everything possible to protect his family from the Nazis.

How good the performance is doesnt surprise me because Strauss was a great conductor but I am surprised by how good the sound is.

It's one of my favorite performances of this piece. Almost 50 years after he wrote it, Strauss clearly remembered how it should be performed.

What an amazing recording. Thank you for posting. In my opinion, the Vienna Phil is one orchestra that can surpass all others when it pulls out the stops and really tries. This was obviously a special occasion for them. Vienna, like most of the world, was suffering appallingly in 1944. This performance generates tremendous energy. I hope it helped counterbalance the negativity to a certain extent.

Ah! The pleasure of hearing Strauss conduct two of thee most Straussian of Strauss passages: The first beginning at 2:24 thru 5:33 and the second at 7:20 until 9:20 is simply Heaven. I could listen to them eternally. I've always imagined that they should be played just like this but no conductor I've heard has managed to succeed in realizing them in this manner. Wow! What a treasure you've shared with us! Thanks.

I’ve read so many things recently about new recordings and how this piece should be interpreted and all of that but I would imagine that if you really wanna know go to the source and listen to the composer conducting it himself. No question about it this is how the piece is supposed to be performed. TY

There are stronger overtones of "Rosenkavalier" and "Till Eulenspiegel" and more poignancy in Strauss' recording than in many others.

Great job, Don. Is this from the Vanguard issue? I think that was better than the M&A version, (My source) or the Turnabout on LP. My ex made off with mine, I've been looking for that set for 30 years.
