dave091790 I haven't seen any ice bucket challenges that costed more than $10 worth of ice to do, and I think any money spent TOWARDS the challenge is money that could be put towards the donation amount itself. a helicopter for a donation video? hundreds if not thousands of dollars to operate.
Wow my father passed away from als the day after this video was released. Thank you for contributing to research for the disease Linus. Really means a lot even 6 years later
One thing that can help you when cleaning your monitor is to turn it off for like 15 minutes just incase its hot, and when cleaning it, to use a flashlight so you can see all of the gunk on your screen easily.
Water? What kind of water, tap water, mineral water, distilled water? I used to use tap water on my monitor and it leaves some streaks than can be seen on dark scenes of games. Now using a 50-50 alcohol and distilled water and it doesn't leave streaks anymore... but am I going to hurt my monitor by using alcohol solution on it?
I've been using alcohol to clean all my electronics and screens for the past 5 years and have never had an issue and I'm really picky about keeping my screen crystal clear. I think it's fine, although I don't have any research to back that up other than personal experience.
Water doesn't work for me. It's always leaving streaks. I use lots of 70% Alcohol and a micro fibre cloth. Never had any problems with the anti glare coating of my Samsung TFTs. Only the plastic bezel may get some grey shadows but as long as it doesn't completely dissolve, I don't care.
Distilled water is best but I find that a 1/3 mix of alcohol and distilled gets me good results. I also use a small spray bottle so I don't have to make up the solution to often.
Alcohol is fine. DON'T USE AMMONIA! That is what is in windex. Basically the rule is, in electronics, never use ammonia. The main reason for that is it dissolves alkali metals and becomes quite conductive. Since anti-glare screens are typically a chemical coating of magnesium fluoride, and magnesium is an alkaline metal, you can see the problem here.
Thanks Linus. Got my UW monitor a week ago and it had now unwanted stuff on the screen. I thought about buying those fancy solutions especially made to clean a monitor but water works just fine.
One: i would never use paper based material to clean any screen or class surface, because the fibers in the paper may couse microscopic scratches, that will get more intence over time. Two: the isopropyl alcohol is great for glass surfaces, but I would recommend using rubber gloves, because your skin can absorb the alcohol, and it is very bad for your health. But still a nice guide, always enjoy watching :)
@@shikabaneconga Do you see anyone doing this in 2023? No, because it was in fact a stupid and (not for me) amusing trend that made people feel like a good person without making an actual effort.
For Monitors - White Vinegar and Distilled Water. 1:3 ratio is perfect, no streaks or smearing looking at the screen at different angles 4 inches from the screen and from different light sources.
I really like the idea of Techquickie tech maintenance guides! If more could be made in the future - I'm sure myself and many others will appreciate it.
Same here. I get annoyed every time I see my phone full of fingerprints. So I've decided to start using atom cleanse mobile phone sanitizer which I find it safer, easier and effective. It gets the job done faster than I thought.
I use a alcohol-free screen cleaning solution from a company called *Rogge*. It is super effective, and there are no streaks left after the cleaning process. I always recommend this. For touchscreens, I simpy use a microfiber cloth. I'd never use alcohol on any screen. Touchscreens usually have oleophobic coating. Alcohol will kill that coating.
I bought a screen cleaning kit at Micro Center for like $6. Comes with a good size bottle of alcohol and ammonia free solution and a microfiber cloth. Works perfect for monitors, TV's, etc. and is extremely safe.
I had some REALLY nasty insect blood stains (summer + late night gaming sessions don't mix). Used some plain water and a micro fiber cloth which came with my phone and it cleaned perfectly. REMEMBER to clean clockwise and anti-clockwise! Thanks linus
At 2:25, if that's a clean screen, then I might as well be the next president of the USA. Use only distilled water, and if the stain persist mix 50/50 distilled water with white vinegar.
I almost go Super Saiyan when someone touches my monitor. I got new monitor recently and it's perfectly clean, except for normal dust particles. I had a friend over and we were playing DOOM Eternal and he went to touch the screen and I immediately yelled "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH THE SCREEN!" He about shat himself. I can't stand when people don't respect other's tech property or property in general. It should be common sense not to touch a monitor or TV screen. "A clean screen without streaks" as your video clearly shows... streaks... You can clean streaks off of anti-glare screens using rubbing alcohol. But it has to be done properly. You need a reasonable amount to make a pure "black" wet mark with a microfiber cloth that covers the entire segment of the area of the screen, and dry off quickly with a polishing motion with a dry microfiber cloth. Heavy Duty Bounty or Kirkland Paper Towels make good substitutes for microfiber clothes as well. This method takes practice, I recommend a junk anti-glare screen to test this method on, until you perfect it. Warning: There may be some odd ball screens out there, that do not react well to alcohol. Although, I haven't found one yet. Some companies issue warnings about not using alcohol on their screens, but I half suspect that is more related to the paint of the shell of the product, and not the screen itself.
cleaning my computer screen with a wet cloth made looking at it so much nicer & easier.. even when light literally shines directly on to my screen; esp. because all the dust got whipped away.. This is awesome.

Good vid - Completely agree on using only water. I have a question though, specifically when people I shall not name (someone I live with) decided to wipe, what looks like greasy, pizza grease stained fingers across my screen? I have tested this on old devices with no ill effects and it has been awesome for the shiny non antiglare plastic screens.
I always think a dab and remove process is required before any swiping motions (ie. circular or straight), thus removing as much as possible without any movement, as movement of the dust/dirt highly increases the likelihood of scratches. Yes, it takes a lot more time.
For my glasses as well is use foam soap from a public bathroom (I live in a facility) and put some on each lens on all sides and then rinse your glasses with hot course water then wipe off with paper towels-my glasses after are so immaculately clean it's like new. I use a small cloth that comes with glasses. Nobody wants stains on their glasses and so it cleans very well. It is also free. I just went to a eye glass store and they gave it to me.

Well if you're looking to clean your screen "as fast as possible" you'll probably want something powerful, like a fire hose!
