Low Maintenance Planted Betta Tank - Step By Step!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- I built a nice low maintenance planted betta tank while I was on a holiday road trip! This was a gift for 88-year-old grandma so I wanted it to be as simple and easy as I could possibly make it! I only used supplies from a trip to a nearby Petco. I think I succeeded - She loves her tank.

Man, your grandma got hooked up!!
Ayyyy I found you on a video! Cool
Hey, you said you didn't really watch any other fish youtubers
Chrissssss
CHIRS?
hello.
When getting beta you really don’t have to consider their health at the pet store unless they’re dead. One that isn’t very active or looks unhealthy will quickly recover in a properly heated and filtered tank
cole hawkins I think she wanted to get a fish that her grandma didn’t have to worry about much in terms of getting sick or dying.
Not true! I lost 15 bettas when I pick the sick one at the fish store just last year. Both male and females!
mentoswatthehell if you have 15 fish and they die, you’re doing something wrong
@@colehawkins1803 i wish, they never recover, i used over night water with filter and put plants and so on.
@@mentoswatthehell
No... if you lost 15 bettas in one year, you are definitely doing something wrong.....
Awww so sweet of you to mail your beneficial bacteria to your grandma! Only a veteran fish keeper would care so much. :)
Either a veteran fishkeeper or a huge dork! ;)
What's a beneficial bacteria?
Love your videos and fish so much
@@jenniferperez3772 Long story short, it's bacteria that will consume amonnia from fish waste and produce less toxic substances. Look up nitrogen cycle for more information.
@@ErrdilPhalar Thank you very much for the info. Now I know the benefit of it.
“Java fern are really hard plants to kill”
Me who’s killed every single one I’ve had 👁👄👁
Same 😉👌 don’t worry we in the same boat
I have tons of regular plants doing fine but tank plants I kill I have no idea why. It’s a slow long death. One time tho. I had a beta with a Java fern and the fern lived up till the week or week after the fish died. I tried to keep it for the next fish but it died and had lived for probably 2 years. I was so confused. Because it was the only underwater plant I’ve had that lived longer than a couple months and I think it was the fish. That beta had a green thumb. I’ll also point out out of all the beta fish I’ve owned that was my favorite we had a special connection and that makes it even more special. But not I’m like oh u stupid fish why can’t u take care of this fern like my other one did? But I, getting a new tank tmro. I’m making adjustments and hopefully it works out this time!
Here’s a little tip. The Java fern you get from the tubes at pet stores, are wrapped with a black thread that kills them eventually. There are actually multiple plants with their own rhizome. So when you think your getting one plant you are getting like four
@@user-qo6il9vg3n oh wow. Thanks!
@@adriannarichman765 no problem
I love that you said “little” and got a 10 gallon tank. When I worked at a pet store, so many times I asked customers their tank size and they’d answer “pretty big! At least like 10 gallons. I’d want to say “yeah, that’s not big at all” in a really smartass tone of voice (I never did that lol, just wanted to)
That is pretty big.
Yeah Abigail C, 10 gallons is a small tank
@@vols24png I'll consider it medium sized? Not small but medium sized.
Abigail C still small to me.
I used to work at one. I had a guy tell me he has the "biggest tank they make". I said "I'm sorry, I still need to know the gallon size." "A 75." "Sir, I have a 125 gallon. Now, what types of fish are you thinking?" "8 oscars and I'll need 4 of them allergy eaters, then..."
I still have nightmares.
Breaks my heart to see pet stores keep bettas in that way... It should be outlawed.
Jotta H. Have you ever seen how they are delivered to the pet stores? In little tiny plastic bags that look like they have a spoonful of water in them they also send the cups with them and have everything pre labeled I work at a petco and the one I work for we try to keep all the bettas and every other animal in the store happy and healthy we do water changes every 3 days and add stress coat to the water to keep them happy
Yes it is but you would have to get a lot of tanks for each fish because males do fight sometimes and are better alone same for females but can work in groups better
@@lilveggieplant2362 Look at how aquarium co-op keeps their bettas. There's better ways to hold bettas than in a tiny cup, yes even the males.
JaydenDSin that’s is true but things do cost money and can be expensive all that stuff for one fish I mean I can’t blame them
Lil veggie Plant actually I do blame them. Aquarium co-op is hardly a conglomerate chain pet store but they manage to give their bettas good husbandry. Meanwhile petsmart with all the money and resources at their disposal, can’t be bothered to do do more than put bettas on a cupcake display.
Your Petco looks so nice. Mine is always never stocked with what I need.
I read "pleco", I was afraid.
Same here
Same, my Petco is always dirty. Thank goodness there a pet plus and supplies where I live. That place is always so neat and clean. All the fish look healthy as well.
lmao mine is so rank. Literally one of the bettas they had for sale was dead...and they only had like 10 to choose from. Some of them being small females and males.
“It’s really cold” caught me out tf guard bc it looks super hot and dry there💀 it’s so beautiful though like omgggg
Get your Grandma a couple of Nirite snails they wont eat the plants and there wont be any algae in the tank as they are machines. They dont breed in freshwater aswell. The leaves on the sword will die but leave it even though it will look dead new leaves will grow back.
Yeah the sword is dying back already! Thanks :)
Most stem plants lose their big leaves and grow usually smaller and different shapes leaves, once they're acclimated to their new tank. Every plant grows differently based on water parameters, temp, and food (ferts). Most plants are farmed out of water with just the roots underwater and this is why most of the original leaves will die off and the new ones look different! 😉
Ooh yeah right there right here. Thats what she said.
Tony Martin thank you cuz she was getting super judgemental, they can't keep them all in tanks. it's not rational.
@@SimplyBetta Swords are a little similar to crypts in that they melt back a bit when introduced to different water chemistry.
You can put large hygrophila and wisteria from Petco (they have both usually) as background plants. They grow well even with low lights.
I nearly got some wisteria, oh well. I’ll ship my mom some to put in there :)
For some reason I've never been able to keep Wisteria alive. Maybe I'll try again whenever I set up a new tank since its been years and I've learned a lot more since trying
This is a sword. I’m gonna break off the ones that are sworda dying
The Betta is beautiful such a shame about the others in pots drives me mad Your grandmother is going to love the tank and will become addicted like all us other fish lovers What is she going to name him?
Did the period key break?
" No I'm not precious " . She's adorable.
How dare you! I like how she defends her honor.
This was so cute! I wish I could visit the south oneday..it looks so cool!
It is pretty cool and so alien to me!

princess Luna kusuma hey don’t cuss my BFF out. I think you should apologize or I’ll smash the ban hammer
Your daughter is so stinking cute. Love the tank.
Haha thank you
13:26 Riley is just so cute, my God. I hope your grandma is enjoying that fish tank.
This is how gifting animals during the holidays (or anytime) should be! Simple yet beautiful tank! 💕
my old carnival goldfish passed away recently and now I'm thinking of making a betta tank so I'm glad you made this video!
Make sure you do your research, because people who win carnival goldfish always put them in some crappy ass 1 gallon bowl. Bettas need at least a 5 gallon tank, but aim for a 10 gallon.
This was such a sweet video! I hope your grandma loves the tank :) It makes me so happy to see people making videos about making actual filtered, heated, cycled tanks for bettas instead of 1 gallon bowls so hopefully more and more fishkeepers provide good care for their bettas!
Thanks! Even though I use small grow-out containers for my betta breeding setup, I always suggest bigger water volumes for petkeepers. Because the average person doesn't spend an hour each day caring for their fish!
All my rescue Bettas are now doing great in their 1 Gal habitat. I had to down size from the bigger tanks because they were not using it swimming around but just hanging around the plant only. Because they are territorial they get stressed easily pacing back and forth trying to guard the tank from predators. They now are content inside a smaller area. It's okay to try a 1 gal tank for your Betta and see how they do before deciding to get a larger habitat.
@@StarShaddow1 Absolutely! I've heard quite a few people say their fish are less stressed in a smaller aquarium. If that's what works, that's okay, what's really important is the water quality and heating (which is why I say 1 gallon bowl, because most of the time they aren't filtered, cycled, heated, etc.). As long as you tried a bigger tank and realized that a smaller one is better, I see no problem with that. Maybe you could add more hiding places and more dense plants? I'm not sure what your set-up looked like, but I'm curious to know if it would work because I usually have bettas in a 4-5 gallon and haven't experienced any problems like this.
I picked my guy because he puffed up at my finger and when I picked him up he showed curiosity at the new perspective. He's a good little guy!
It’s videos like this and fish keepers like you that make me so excited to start keeping betta again!
So glad you put it in a 10 gallon tank. Not a little two gallon. I have one in a 10-gallon it's so easy to take care of. Once a week I take a cup an empty out a little bit of water and then put fresh water in it.Very very easy. Your grandma should be able to do it so nice of you to do this for your grandma. Grandma's are awesome
Yeah I did a 10 gallon to make a maintenance way way easier. Last thing I would do is give my grandma a little fish tank that needs bi-weekly maintenance! Ha ha, she’s loving it thank you
I wish I saw this video before I got my betta. This is a very helpful step by step video and it's so sweet you did this for your grandma
Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful
That's a beautiful tank and your Betta is beautiful and he has plenty of room to swim.
Thank you for posting this! I am in the beginnings of wanting to upgrade my tank for my betta! He is currently in a 3 gallon, which worked perfectly fine for my first betta I had years ago, but I want to give him loads of room to roam and I want to get some live plants! 10 gallon was the size I was playing around with and I think this video helped me make up my mind! 👍🏻
That looks like Monument Valley where many old westerns were filmed. 👍👍👍
You seem so sweet. I love the tank, what a great thing to do for your grandma.
OMG Riley... Doesn't even understand how precious saying "No, I'm not precious" and trying to climb rocks is. Ack. That was the cutest thing I've seen all week.
Awww how nice. This makes me want to try again. ☺️
The little guy is cute, enjoying the video, I'm so lost in an pet store.
Wow you choose a beautiful betta!
That's honestly the best gift ever. You're such a sweet and smart person. I just think it's an adorable idea to give your grandma a little friend to look forward t taking care of and watching everyday. You're inspiring!
awwww thanks
your mix of gentle personality and knowledge is perfect!! love this!
Thank you so much! Sending good vibes all the way from UK 🇬🇧❤️
😊 nice to hear how she liked the decor! Great gift!
Swords like light. Position it to get the benefit of the center of the florescent lamp. It's a centerpiece plant; grows large if happy.
Thanks! You’re the first to offer sword advice
Looks nice!!!! Hope your grandma likes it!!
Thanks she does! It is her nightlight ;)
That's a cool lookin' betta! It drives me nuts that those places sell emersed grown plants, hopefully your grandma knows about the inevitable die back stage?
I wanna go rock climbing! That looks like such a fun place to hang around.#MyPrecious
I’ll keep an eye on the plants but I like that anubias and java ferns aren’t known for dying back. Not sure about swords though
Lol #myprecious
@@SimplyBetta The sword should grow fast with the fluval stratum and really fill out the aquarium!:) I have yet to have mine propagate, but they send out a long vine like growth that starts growing a chain of little plants attached to it. :)
That's so sweet, love the rock formations that y'all were climbing on.
My Petco is the best Petco ever. the people who take care of the fish really take care of the fish and know what they're doing
I love your videos. Please keep us posted on how your grandma's tank is doing I'd love to see how it looks when it's all finished
The amazon sword will do very well! The way they propagate is very similar to a jungle val. They will send off shoots BUT you will end up having to replant them yourself. You’re super sweet to have set this up for your grandma!
What a beautiful fish and tank!!
What a coincidence! Got a FB memory yesterday of our hike at Arches exactly 3 years ago 😃
It is so beautiful there... oh, and nice video about the Betta tank. Almost forgot why I’m here 😄
Cheers from The Netherlands
My husband and I had a wall of swords in the background of our tank, we found that they didn’t do so well close to the heater and filter, I’m not sure if it had something to do with too much movement and eventually you’ll want to switch to a different led to support the plant growth, you can also buy liquid plant food for the water which helped our plants stay green! 🐠
I follow a lot of fish keeping channels but yours is the one I await for a new video. Amazing Editing, Great Content! Keep up the good work. Cheers!
That’s very kind thank you :)
Love it! That is so sweet to do for your grandma. Great video!
I love this ❤️ I have a 10 gallon planted tank now. I started with a 3 gallon, and it just wasn’t big enough for Him. He’s much happier and I added black neon tetras and a sucker fish. Mine betta is really chill and hasn’t attacked any of them. He’s never even flared since I’ve had him. Love that he’s so chill. My boyfriend thinks I’m obsessed. Maybe I am...
Very helpful getting live plants tomorrow, my betta texted me get rid of fake plants . God bless your family and grand ma
I loved this I had no idea it could be this easy to start a planted tank! Thanks for the tips on starting mine!
Glad you liked it!
That betta is absolutely stunning!
The sword is going to melt back and then grow back different leaves, the new leaves are going to be long instead of the paddle-shape.
The anubias species appears to be hastifolia, which I personally love because of its arrow-shaped leaves. The java fern with the little fingers at the tips is species windelov, and the other is just the common variety of java fern. Great plant choices!
Thanks for the names! Hasifolia gets huge. Too bad it takes like a decade though lol
Yep common and windolov java fern, but never stick them in the soil, their roots are not meant for it, you tie the plants to some wood or stones, Java fern take their plantfood out of the water not out the soil.
I’d just like to say the babies honestly are gold they also live longer than the adults with proper care
Good to hear you've had luck!
That is a beautiful betta. Nice set up for grandma
I hope someone would give me the same gift like this. 😍😍😍
FYI Fluval Stratum is not nutrient rich, you still need to add root tabs and or ferts for the swords.
Nope Fluval Stratum is meant for plants too - it is not an inert substrate.
@@SimplyBetta yes that is true it does contain some minerals and has a good cec cation exchange capacity which means it can absorb nutrients and release them to plant roots. But you still have to dose ferts either root tabs or to the water column. ADA OR tropical soil are actual soil based substrates containing high levels of ammonia needed for good root growth. But no matter what substrate you use for good plant growth co2 and ferts are the only way to go. Without co2 and ferts you will need very very low light and get ready for algae and stunted growth.
Richard Portelli ah gotcha
you are awesome, I know that your granny is loving the fish tank you bought because it's beautiful and it's what she has been wanting, your awesome❤💯❤💯
That was fun...yay....so yep its been confirmed
I need better substrate....i like the light timer ...so do plants....you can modify the filter media..
This is the best and most understandable setup video I’ve seen after searching for weeks 🤡 thank you!
“I’m not precious” girl!! You lying 😂😂❤️😭
Haha my thoughts exactly
“Momma, I am not precious, and can climb the rocks”. She is too cute!

Love this! I want to make my aunt a little betta tank and this is a great guide for those of us out of state visiting family this holiday season!
some hides and a betta leaf near the surface would be nice additions. I hope your mom will be testing the water and doing water changes etc. for your grandma. I don’t personally think there’s such a thing as a low maintenance tank lol. And while I love the rocks, I’ve found them to be too rough for a Betta’s tail. Hope it works out.
Wow that is one cute eeeh... betta!
This video made really happy! God bless your grandma! She’s rocking with Mr. Betta
And the tank is still going strong! ;)
Simply Betta super!
Oh cool, I'm watching from New Mexico!
Beautiful Betta. I see lots of people posting those nice blue/white bettas they really are stunners.
So for future reference please rinse decorations and gravel and stuff like that because the oils on you’re hands can get in the betta fish gills and cause sicknesses witch can leave to death
I love how much you care for your family ❤️
You should save the betta fish at petco
I also set my grandmother up with a 10g betta tank! They are truly some interactive and wonderful fish. I catch her talking to her crown tail and she seems to be really enjoying it. Nice set up and video!
That’s great! Grannies need fish tanks now and then :)
As someone from New Mexico... I was really shocked to hear you say you were here! 😂😂 usually nobody knows what New Mexico even is!
New Mexico? What is that
Thank you for making this, it's definitely gonna help me make a nice tank.
That's a great gift, made with caring and love. I think you did a great job building something that would fit her needs. Also, I totally get the No Man's Sky thing
Glad you got it! And thank you :)
Me watching in year 2021, inspired and motivated to have like this tank myself, thank you for this video!
i always make sure to get the fish that look like theyre almost dead so that at least if they die, they aren't dying in a tiny cup at the pet store. normally they end up recovering super fast once they get some food and better. conditions in their system
I live in New Mexico
Where? I'm in ABQ.
please make another video about this place... like a travelling vibe
This was the first video I watched from you and got it saved!

Thanks, have a nice Christmas too!
That's very nice of you. Everything looks great.
What a nice gift. It's beautiful. Your daughter is adorable too. 💚🐡💚
haha thank you :)
Hello, is it possible to redo a tank? How would you go about doing that? So you don’t interrupt the water cycle or anything
Hillary Fritz hello. :) just popping in on this week old comment. One of your best bets with doing that is to take some of the water from the tank and put it in a big bucket or second tank and let your fish chill in there while you work. After they are safely out of the way you can adjust things as you see fit or even completely redo everything. To keep the water good a cycled as it already is be sure to keep your the decorations, your filter, and your substrate nice and wet to keep the Beneficial bacteria alive and well. After your done resetting up the tank you can slowly introduce your fish again after the water has settled. I would suggest doing a Partial water change a day or 2 after just to be careful.
I don’t claim to be an expert but I hope that helps. :)
New Mexico is truly beautiful!
Thank god we don't have these "box fishes" in Germany
You have. They are in the whole Europe, but you don't see them. How do you think your pet reseller get his fish? Betta are in fish box in Europe, that's the reality, and stuffed with a lot of chemicals to anesthetize them during the shipping.
I love seeing your channel grow. You've created a wonderful community around your work. Thank you for your hard work! And no: she is "not precious!!!" Lol
