  • On Saturday, June 5, 2021 Pepperdine School of Public Policy hosted its annual Augustus and Patricia Tagliaferri Dean's Distinguished lecture entitled, Preserving the American Project: The Bias Narrative vs. the Development Narrative featuring Dr. Glenn C. Loury is the Merton P. Stoltz Professor of Economics at Brown University.
The Augustus and Patricia Tagliaferri Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series was established through an endowment for the School of Public Policy by benefactor Dr. Augustus "Gus" Tagliaferri (MBA '74). From its founding, the School of Public Policy has uniquely considered the role all the liberal arts play in shaping sustainable policy and great leaders.
The Augustus and Patricia Tagliaferri Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series hosts leading scholars to explore the many facets that comprise wise public decision-making.
Last year's wave of public protests across America literally and figuratively placed the question of race front and center in the nation's public square. The debates around the best ways forward-politically and in public policy-have been polarizing and wide-ranging. But a common thread running through even disparate policy proposals has been the quest for increasing the "social capital"-the relational foundations of economic opportunity-of African Americans.
In this lecture by one of the country's foremost experts on social capital, economist Dr. Glenn Loury will explore the components that lead to greater economic opportunity and broader societal flourishing . . . and those that don't. In so doing, we might realize anew the common aspirations we all have for "the pursuit of happiness."

Would love to see more from this nuanced, deep thinker. I’m always inspired when people of such depth are able to articulate their thoughts so clearly as Dr. Loury has.

Whew! I feel like I’ve just taken an exhilarating, almost 90-minute mental tour of a vibrant Amazon Rainforest of ideas; trailing Dr. Glenn Loury, a tutor and guide whose agility and alacrity sometimes far outpaced my ability to keep up. There were times I fell far behind, needing to rest and rewind, occasionally requiring multiple iterations to comprehend an underlying message built from graduate-level language and two-dollar words (I had to look up the definition of "endogenous").
And, as usual, the brilliance of Dr. Loury’s cogent reasoning does not disappoint. He even gives the audience an intimate peek into his heart during the Q&A. He remains one of my heroes.

This is probably the greatest speech I've ever heard. This level of searing honesty and and clarity of thought reflects great character and towering intellect on Loury's part. This needs about sixty million more views. Share it people, as much as you can.

Very few will listen to this good and brilliant man. The message I get from him is that there are real solutions but they require hard effort. This will not resonate with many.
I really appreciate the distinction he makes between blaming the victim and realizing that certain aspects of a culture still need to change for meaningful progress to take place.
    Thanks Glenn.

Yes Indeed! Glenn Loury has won me over for the second time. He is genuinely brilliant but even more impressive, he is intellectually honest. I have seen him struggle with his conscience, and finally 'ground himself' in some lousy truths. He gives us all hope.

I love Glenn Loury. Brilliant mind! I was introduced to him very shortly after G. Floyd’s death and I’ve listened to just about everything before and since. But now I feel like he’s family. And I’m worried about his health. ☹️

Many people on the left consider Michael Dyson an expert on such subjects. I think Glenn Loury is the most rational person I have heard to talk about this topic. He understands its a complex issue and not one view narrative and looks at it as such.

Take the stand. Make a contribution to preservation of the republic. Toil planting trees in which shadows not you, but the subsequent generation will sit. That is the way of civilization and this is how we develop as a group.
I don't mean everyone has to thoughtlessly sacrifice every step, but within reason we have a duty to some sacrifice. Giving what we can give. That is what made the difference generations ago for us, this is what will make the difference downstream. I think Glenns talk here is an admirable example. He's not a zealot warrior jumping into every fire, but he walked the walk over the years, took some fights on, and now that it matters and when he's got a position to make a difference he goes into the foxhole. Especially as he's in best case scenario, if the conversation favors development and it starts to work out in USA, only going to have a short satisfaction late in life and never much of reward. We can't pay back, but we can pay forward.
