      Why? There is no benefit to putting 1000s of people into space now or the near future. It makes an interesting story, but we don't have trillions of dollars to spend just to put a few hundred people on the moon, for example. There are the moon they would be in constant danger and completely dependent on people on earth for everything and it would cost enormous amounts of money. We have young children all over the world who don't have enough food, poor housing, no heat or air conditioning, and drinking dirty water. Putting wealthy, highly educated, privileged people up in space to live is unthinkable at the point.

    Ideas for future episodes: 1.) How to Escape from the solar system without being caught. (Avoid being pursued by the hegemonic dyson swarm empire. Or something like that) 2.) How living in the space between stars might be a preference for humans once we have had enough time to do so, as there will be plenty of time before we can traverse the vast spaces between stars. If human intelligence is truly adaptable, it may decide to skip the stars altogether in favor of this vastly larger volume of the galaxy and universe. Might the resources in between stars be a better environment in which to thrive, outside of a gravity well entirely?

    • @isaacarthurSFIA

      True, them and black holes almost got in there, but I was trying to avoid spending too much time on drives though since we've got a compendium devoted to that already. They're faster but overlap conceptually with both fusion and ion drives, and the net effect of access to either is sufficient speed and energy abundance to make colonization much easier.

    I would argue that there are 5 possible scenarios for interstellar colonisation:
    1. We never leave our solar system.
    2. We use interstellar arcs to reach other stars taking many generations to complete the journey (most likely the arcs would be powered by a fusion reactor).
    3. Relativistic speeds will allow us to travel to nearby stars taking many years to complete the journey but still within a human lifespan timeframe. These ships would be driven by antimatter engines.
    4. Faster than light travel (using a warp drive) will allow us to quickly colonise and move throughout the galaxy.
    5. Instantaneous travel (using wormholes) will regularly let us travel to other galaxies.

      Fair point, but I think we have to assume a lot of systems won't stay static, this generation's separatist group, 10 generations down the road, might have very different views on the matter, and might also view a small trickle of trade or tourism very differently and see that expand over time.

    Fusion drives dont really need to break even to be good thrusters. If you consider the neutrons emitted from a homemade fusor running at 1-2 kW total you can get 10^6s of Isp just only with a thrust of 10^-5 N. This ignores the alpha particles cause I was lazy and requires significant shielding over half the core and then uses a very simplified emission profile for the neutrons

    Terraforming planets will be made easier when we learn to move the planet in question's orbit and fine tune it with a moon such as ours. Using the Earth/Moon/Sun model we have and emulating it. Building moons that 'fit' the target planet, and moving orbits are two technologies we can set as goals and as foundational to terraforming. Also, we should answer the question: Can several planets occupy the same orbit, perhaps on opposite sides of the sun? Will more than one planet using the same orbit affect the anchoring sun similar to lunar tidal effects? At least, that is imho

      Not yet, I'm not terribly optimistic about it but I think even its critics are prematurely overhyping it, I think. I don't want to kneejerk assume its nonsense, as I tihnk that happens too often, but thus far I'm not seeing anything lending it much credence either,

    great compendium. FYI, I don't remember if it was on Anton Petrov or Fraser Cain, but one of them went into a publication that showed that producing a Kügelblitz black hole was impossible.

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  5 місяців тому +3

      I know Anton did one, Fraser might have too, but tbh I didn't think the paper changed much on the basic reasoning, when I talked about black hole tech earlier this year I was pretty blunt that I doubted we could make anything sub-megaton or even gigaton. We have a lot of papers come out that more or less formally state stuff folks have been discussing on forums for years before. Though often with much better rigor of course, the problem is without an actual functional theory of quantum gravity nothing is even vaguely conclusive.

    The most important thing (besides ability to transfer/store mind/memories in a digital or biochem-augmented, artificial way)
    IS people colonizing be 'relatively' free in such 'Frontier' as space colonies/edges of space empires.
    Heinlein himself argued that TRUE FREEDOM could only ever exist on the frontier (IE very edge of civilization), and that the end of the 'West' was also the end of that true freedom: exchanged for laws, social conveniences (IE stores, gov, etc).

    • @djdrack4681
      @djdrack4681 5 місяців тому

      The same way that corporate power being consolidated into even a few dozen companies (IE auto, aerospace, mil-indy, aggri-chem industries) = 'innovation' is limited severely; I don't see massive space colonization (with ppl, not just probes/machines) IF the controlling power is AUTHORITARIAN: They would seem (from human standpoint) to be mutually exclusive in long-term

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  5 місяців тому +1

      Oh yes, his writing definitely emphasizes the frontier = freedom idea, along with a generalized education, academic and hands-on DIY skills. That's practically the theme of our "Have Spacesuit - Will Travel" episode from last year. I don't particularly disagree, given that I actively chose to live in the country on my farm, but it depends on what sort of freedoms you're focusing on, as one can make a case the wild west and frontier intrinsically lacked a lot of freedoms a person can get from civilization, like freer access to information and selection of goods. Though I'll acknowledge the point might be a bit semantic.

    • @djdrack4681
      @djdrack4681 5 місяців тому

      @@isaacarthurSFIA philosophy is nearly as vast as space, so semantics do matter.
      I was pointing to concepts like:
      - domain (freedom to do 'as you please') with your private property, which is lost in urban areas here;
      - scientific experimentation freedom (no bans on cloning etc): how can gov 'limit' your research when your fam farm 'a 200km asteroid' could have 100x the defenses of all Earth's militaries. (excl. bio-chem weapons).
      - freedom of travel: IE you get to a untouched planet and your fam claims the whole thing = its yours as long as you can 'control/possess' it. No "you can only travel here, settle there"
      - Financial/Economic freedom. IF you have centralized gov, these may be optional...and no guarantee anything beyond barter system may be needed: BUT if you wanted to, you could still print your own currency/trade in 'asteroid futures'.
      I suspect centralized groups (IE gov, corps, colleges) aren't stupid (at highest levels). Just as schools know the moment 'degree needed to be in med field' goes away; they'll lose $$$/control over resident placement (and maybe their college hospitals); The KNOW that space presents a 'unbound frontier'...IE they lose control the moment general population has access.
      Airline industry has stagnated and Bwing has QA/QC probs due to corp bureaucracy/monopoly. How does current civilization manage to get even 1mil ppl in space habitats/initial colonies on asteroids/moons when gov/corps will try to control 100% of lives (IE neo-slavery of the colonists)? ITs not 'hyperbolic', 20th century both soviets/US had gov AND corp 'towns' where they controlled ALL aspects of the 'employees' lives.
      ...and who would volunteer to live in a bubble habitat on ganymede where everything from workday, to mate, to what they eat/when, to use of 'press' (IE access to satellite internet connections back to Earth/comms off-colony) is dictated by a foreman, who's just a mouthpiece for distant venture capitalist/gov?
      ^^^
      This seems to be a current hurdle, that is almost nigh-impossible to overcome in Earth's current $/gov bound economy of life.
      Somewhat broad follow-up, but you get the idea.

    Hypothetical game time now, considering what has been discussed in this video and other SFIA videos on colonizing various planetary bodies, If you had to write the plan for human colonization of space over the next millennium what would you build and in what order? If you knew Earth would be destroyed in 1000 years and it was your job to plan the continuation of the human race through the colonization of space, what would you do?

    Cloning fatigue is real but it takes a long time to set in and even when it does the results are not immediate. Cloning fatigue is a mix of various factors working together to degrade the viability of the individual. There are issues with genetic damage from the Cloning process itself and issues with genetic damage from the age of the cells used to make the clones and issues regarding the condition of the cells used to make them and the exposure of harmful substances. In other words the more clones that have been made and allowed to reach adulthood before cells are harvested for additional Cloning the more likely genetic damage is to have occurred.
