When I was little my family had a three-legged cat named Crash! I found him laying in the middle of the street when I was about 9 years old. He was the sweetest cat and I’m so glad my mom was brave enough to run out into traffic to rescue him

My cats leg is being amputated because he got hit by a car we thought we were going to have to put him down because we can not afford the costs but a local charity has said they will pay for it and the vets are only charging cost so doing their labour for free he is going into surgery tomorrow!❤️😸💞 I hope he will be ok!!!

My cat had his leg amputated 5 days ago. Seeing him for the first time made me cry, it was stressful for the both of us because it was a traumatic situation. I’ll be honest I still find it difficult because I keep picturing the way he looked before. But I still love him with all my heart. I’m so happy he survived his ordeal. Now he’s back on his 3 feet and healing quite well. And he’s the sassy chatty cat he always was. I can’t wait for his stitches to come out so he doesn’t have to wear a cone all the time and can really get stuck back in to normal life

We are in the process of deciding to complete a partial arthrodesis for ankle repair on our 1.5 yr old cat Valley Blue or amputating. It’s been 4 days since he was hit by a car. He has a wound that needs to heal before it can be splinted for 8 weeks to see if it heals with regained mobility and vet thinks amputation should be a strong consideration. I am torn about the surgery option. We could save his leg but it is an invasive and painful procedure and recovery will be 16 weeks with most in confinement. Whereas amputation could bring short recovery and sooner pain relief. Thank you for this video.

I have a tripod kitty! He's the best! He was found as a stray, badly mauled by another cat, and they fixed him up but the shelter was so overcrowded no one caught that he had an untreated wound on his leg until it was too late and infection had set in.
An added bonus of tripods missing their back legs is that they can't jump very high, so it's easy to keep him out of things. I did have to make some minor accessibility tweaks to my living area (stairs up to the bed, making sure I got a cat tree that required no big leaps to get to the highest spot) but they're super easy tweaks and totally worth it to give him a great life.
    Adopt tripods!

    • @pawprints1986

I hope youll see this... it has me wondering how they do (or will do) with the litterbox? Once they become on the older side and that squatting or even arthritis starts in the remaining back leg. how do they manage? Or are you not at this point yet?
One of mine hurt her back leg, just a muscular thing, but trying to potty every time would re-injure what she had done. After not long i wondered what she would do if i held her in the litter, putting her down enough to feel the litter but still supporting her weight from underneath her belly area - this helped her fully heal! luckily she understood what i was trying to do seemingly instantly. Took a few weeks of setting alarms and inventing the phrase "I have to go pee the cat" but it was all worth it. I kind of wonder if similar support could be done either via person or device for these tripod kitties once they get older, if squatting is the only issue and theyre otherwise healthy?

    • @pballen9745
      @pballen9745 4 роки тому +19

@@pawprints1986 Thankfully that's not an issue I've run into so far. He had his leg amputated when the vets think he was approximately four years old, and it's been about seven years since then. So far no signs of arthritis, thank god. He did at one point somehow tweak his remaining back leg to the point he could still walk but tried not to if possible for a couple days, and he still managed to use the litterbox just fine then.
So far the only problem the litterbox has presented is that tripods have a much larger turning radius than other cats, so he needs an uncovered, largeish box to be able to turn around in it. And not too much litter, since his balance is wobbly.
TBH I don't have a plan if he does develop arthritis, because he also contracted FIV from his assault and as cold as it sounds, I don't expect he'll be around that long. Of course, I've heard FIV+ cats only have a 5-year life expectancy after contracting the virus, and he's still spry and perfectly healthy after seven years, so if I'm very lucky arthritis will be a problem I'll have to solve at some point. I guess I'll have to deal with it when it comes!

My 16 year old just had hers amputated from a bad rabbies vaccine. When I first got her home I was hit with that emotional shock you described. She's overweight and older so I thought I made a terrible mistake. She's doing better now. It's been a couple months. She will never move like your little one. She's old but she's doing OK. I got a ramp by my bed and she uses it. Sometimes she has to take a rest

So happy to see a tripod cat on here!!!! One of my cats is a tripod!!! His back leg was shot by his last owner, and it had to be removed. So he was a rescue baby, and I love him.

my step mom brought home a kitten who was in bad shape. she was a day old, and her momma had gotten hit by a car and killed. her back right foot had been mangled from the car, and we had to make the decision to amputate the foot at just a day old. we were told she wouldn’t survive. today is her first birthday. i’m so proud of how far she has come, and she is the perfect little tri-pawed kitty!

Ruthie goes in for her amputation on Monday (36 hours?). An outside kitten that was abandoned then suffered trauma snapping her femur. She’s a bit older but still a kitten. Now an inside cat for sure. Amazing that she crawled to the guy who has two three-legged dogs. 😂❤️

I am going through this now. Was your cat able to go outside again? My cat is 1.5 and an outside kitty. This is a hard decision for us.

Yes, you definitely made the right decision for Jez! Once his fur grows out, I bet a lot of people won't even notice that he has three legs. He is such a little beauty! Thank you for doing right by him! 💞 Oh, and the video at the end with Jez and Emmett sleeping together is EVERYTHING!! 🙌🏼

What a legend! One of our family cats came home with a broken leg at age 10 and had to have it amputated. She didn't let it stop her doing *anything* at all, she was the most loving and determined cat and lived a full life making it to age 16!

My friend woke up one morning to find her older cat hanging upside down with her leg caught in the wooden fence. The neighbors had to remove a plank to free the cat and her leg was so badly damaged, it had to be amputated. She adapted very well-- and now stays inside!

I have a male Tuxedo who lost a rear leg at an early age. He adapted so quickly that I never had time to feel sorry for him. I have 2 other cats and he is a better climber than both of them. He is so quick that you never even notice his loss of a limb and he can jump very well as his one rear leg is now incredibly strong. He is also a fantastic rat killer so he is in no way handicapped.
To anyone with a cat that loses a leg, they are the most resilient and adaptable animal possible and will live a long and fruitful life as well as give much pleasure with their practical quirks.

He had to feel so much better after getting rid of that dead leg. I have a tripod kitty too. My Murray lost his front leg when he was only 8 weeks old. His leg was shattered and had a gaping infected wound. Once we got that bad leg off, there was no stopping him. He's almost 12 now. Good job Jez! You're a warrior!

Honestly, I hesitated to watch this feeling it would be hard to watch the little guy suffer. Just feeling sorry selfish for myself - shows it really is good to prepare yourself. So glad you made the video! Volunteering in my humane society we had a kitten I had to exercise following paw surgery. Amazing how I didn't have to micro-manage his recovery afterall (that he'd want to jump too soon). Kittens know their limitations! 🐾💞👣😻

OMG!! I really needed this video. This morning my 5 year old cat, Promise had his left hind limb remove due to a recurring malignant tumor (resulting from receiving the Feline Leukemia Vaccine). I was devastated because I feared he would wake up depressed. They're keeping him overnight, but the nurse was nice enough to send me several photos of before and after. They say he's up using the litter box and eating as if nothing's wrong. He's on heavy pain killers and I look forward to picking him up tomorrow. I was so fearful he would not enjoy his life as a tripod. He was always such an avid hunter, enjoyed climbing trees, roof and fence tops. Seeing your little guy gives me hope that Promise will do just as well. Your kitten is so vibrant, happy and energetic. Your video is comforting, informative and most of all it prepared me for what I'm about to face tomorrow when I pick him up. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
