Just watched a couple of episodes on the making of the Channel Tunnel think this might be the ones you are remembering, she was demonstrating the tunnelling machines in one of them

In 1984 as a 8yo I remember this,was it zigzag that had a series within it that had an alien from space chasing children, he was called the thin man, am I right or wrong?
