ABOUT THE SCORE: Catalan-born composer Marc Timón Barceló has to date composed a series of extremely impressive, and all-too little-heard, scores that harken back mostly to an older, more melodic and orchestrally-savvy form of music-making. For "Coliseum", which I gather to be a live show whose musical identity leaves little doubt as to the "Gladiator"-style histrionics on display, Barceló has composed a rousing and extremely impressive score of the Miklos Rozsa variety, with brilliant brass writing in particular and just enough ethnic, archaic music to transport one back to ancient Greece (and to appease modern ears unaccustomed to the more grandiloquent symphonic scoring on display). One will hear requisite choral nods to Orff later in the suite also, and a Holstian rhythm setter. A highly impressive work, even with clear sources of inspiration.
The painting is Paris Paschalinus Bordon's "Gladiator Camp".
