A power packed trio here, with John Stewart providing the great song, Stuart Smith with the hot licks on guitar and Roseanne's angel voice with just the right bit of grit providing the vocals, it's all you can ask for. My hope is that everyone out there has had or will have had the experience of being this much in love where you can truly say, "our love has turned into a runaway train." It has no equal.
One of the most memorable guitar outros in the history of rock! Smith remains an American guitar god, along with Vince Gill, Joe Walsh, James Burton, Paisley, Carlton, all still playing today!!
We bought a Dodge Caravan minivan to use as our family car, around 35 years ago. It came with a cassette tape. One of the songs on the tape was this one. I've loved this song ever since. My family members have grown up and away. So, now its just me, for a very long time. The song reminds me of a different time. My life will never be like that, again. C'est la vie, say the French. At least I usually have hot coffee, every morning. At least, it's something I look forward to.
Damn good guitar playing there. I could listen to old country music even without the words, just instrumental were amazingly better sounding back then. Thank God for recordings to be able to hear these songs again and again.
it's funny, we bemoan the use of technology like autotune and digital voice processing, but it's only through technology that we can listen to any music at all. technology and music have always gone hand in hand. back in 1988, people were probably bitching about SOMETHING.
I'll take Blake Shelton and Keith Urban over the drug addicted, hard living old country artists like Waylon, Willie and all those old sinners. Heck, they never wore sequins, rhinestones or even hairspray in their hair!
John Stewart who wrote this song was a member of the Kingston Trio....they were presented with the first ever Grammy for a Country and Western Song in 1958, something the traditionalists would like to erase.
It's always been a dynamite song--no matter that the key varies a little from time to time. But, especially for a live version, this one pulls out all the right stops. And, that lead guitar part? It's total killer! It has all the nuances from large to small that make the studio version such a terrific song. If the guy playing it isn't the same guy who was in the studio that day, he must have an eidetic memory for music. I suppose this is one of those songs that sometimes gets criticized for being too progressive to be called real country. But, whatever the official category, it deserved to be put somewhere important, so everyone could hear it. It's among a handful of songs I put at the very top of my personal list. No one else sounds like Rosanne Cash. She was the pefect person to sing this one.
I had saved this on VHS all those years ago. King's Record Shop had received the Grammy for Country album of the year. Steuart Smith is great on this song and was on the whole set. Great tune. One of those songs that really gets to me
I listened to this today and the intro gave me chills and flung me back to a time in my past, and for a minute i seriously considered ripping off this 20 year old band-aid, walking out the door and catch a greyhound goin' south
If you look on UA-cam, you can also find Rosanne singing a cover of her Dad's song "I Still Miss Someone" that not only is an ideal showcase for her beautiful vocals, it will bring a tear (or 10) to your eyes, Tremolux.
Always liked Roseanne's music, but this show made me a big fan. Best band I've seen her with, best version of this song I've heard. I've worn out my VCR tape, thanks for putting this up!
Heard this recently on Sirius XM, went home and found this. Great voice, guitar and drum work. Keith Urban would play the guitar part nowadays with his work.
Wow, Steuart blew the lid off at the end! I get so tickled at the bias against Steuart by so many on Eagles videos ('cause Felder did get a bad deal); but watch this video and tell me Steuart Smith is not a very talented guitarist with great taste.
hoteljason I was wondering if that was Stuart Smith. Yes, he is a brilliant player and I say that as a huge Eagles fan who loves both Bernie Leadon's and Don Felder's work in that band.
Bernie and Don, wonderful! Smith, very modest, is in a different league! Hope you have seen him early on, with Cash, Colvin, and others! Always more than impressive!
Loren Johnson The drummer is Vince Santoro, who worked with Steuart Smith in a group called "Babe" early in their careers and with Roseanne and, even more, with her ex Rodney Crowell (and Smith), on albums from the late 80's on. If you want to see Santoro looking a bit different, lsee him with Crowell and Smith on "Let Freedom Ring" or with Crowell on "Telephone Road," both in UA-cam.
I can hear Trisha Yearwood singing this. She did fantastic when she covered “Seven Year Ache”. This song however was made for Rosanne’s voice. It’s absolutely perfect.
Roseanne and Steuart Smith knocks this song out of the park! Wow!
A great song by one of America's most under-appreciated song writers, the exceptional John Stewart, beautifully performed by Rosanne Cash!
@@HeartoftheDragonColo And many more with and beyond the Kingston Trio
Love her voice...(from the UK)....her father JC would be so proud ❤

Timeless beautiful, powerful voice !

Rosanne Cash has such a very nice voice, and I love her looks. Johnny you did well with your daughters. RIP.
I have always liked the beat of this song
It's amazing how the words come back to you even if you haven't heard a song in more than 20 years. Forgot how great this song was.
❤ love it !!
Country gold from the 90s I was just a teen. Going on 50yrs. Greetings from south Africa
Roseanne is an American treasure. And Steuart too!
Runaway train and 7 yr ache, love these songs. And her voice is perfect for both❤❤
This is my fravorite song of hers.
RIP DADDY 😢his FAVORITE SONG 🎵
Damn good guitar playing there. I could listen to old country music even without the words, just instrumental were amazingly better sounding back then. Thank God for recordings to be able to hear these songs again and again.
Jeremy Lafary that's Steuart Smith who also played with Rodney Crowell, later went on to join the Eagles and now playing with Don Henley

Ugly pants on the drummer, for starters! Great tune...thanks for posting this.

Jeremy Lafary Great guitarist
From Austin City Limits Season 13, Episode 7: Rosanne Cash/Desert Rose Band (1988).
never been a fan of country. this is something in between only a few can do. what a talent!

I believe it was nominated, but lost to K.T. Oslin’s 80s Ladies
Such a great voice. ❤
Great guitar and I love Roseanne's voice.
Me, too.

Brittannia Moon I'm with ya but slow down These brakes. ! Lol
What a voice. And no AutoTune!

This should have been the official video !love it!
Never really listened to her, but now after hearing sing many songs, I am a huge fan.

had this on my mind all afternoon. great song.
🎶 Blind boys and gamblers, they invented the blues 🎶
sweet guitar work...thanks for posting
Great guitar in that one.
Thanks! This was one of my favorite episodes of ACL.
The late great John Stewart wrote this. Roseanne is simply amazing!
Stunning!!! OMG!!! :)
Am I the only one following Roseanne on Twitter? She's hilarious! Not to mention incredibly talented.
Love this style , she's got a great gift to get her version so attractive
this is top of the line!
The curves around midnight aren't easy to see. Roseanne Cash is a genius.
Songwriter: John Stewart (Kingston Trio). Roseanne did it very well.
God, I love her! Great song, soulful performance. Steuart Smith's picking is sublime. Tempo seems a tad fast compared to the record.
Awesome song. First heard it in Atlantic City performed by Culture Club. They rocked it. Wish I could find it at karaoke.
Mary Ann Brunner That woulda been awesome. Love to hear that
Roseanne has SOUL!
Yes she does and a spirit no one is allowed to break shatter or destroy ever again ...
Rosanne Cash rocks!
Oh yeah!
So right for these days🥂🔥🌎🌈
this song is great!austin city limits in the 80s fuckin' rocked
Awesome!
Heard this recently on Sirius XM, went home and found this. Great voice, guitar and drum work. Keith Urban would play the guitar part nowadays with his work.
Does anyone know who is playing lead guitar? Very good, some really slick slide work at the end. Roseanne is amazing too.
The amazing Steuart Smith..played with Rodney Crowell...and also worked with the Eagles and with Don Henley during his solo stint.
Written by the late genius that was John Stewart...look him up...you won't regret it!
where have I been...I heard this song for the first time last night...covered terribly I might add...
is it just me or is this song simular chariots of fire?
Rail Malo
all our lives are runaway trains..
Dios los bendiga
I'm sure her Dad was very proud of her.
Great song, great singer (Rosanne is fantastic), and great guitar. Who is he? Does any body know?
Steuart Smith
I want to share my book with u

Tapping into divinity

hoteljason absolutely no question. Check out Pete Anderson : early yoakam They are both great and kinda have same style
Bernie and Don, wonderful! Smith, very modest, is in a different league! Hope you have seen him early on, with Cash, Colvin, and others! Always more than impressive!
who is the drummer ? he is very good
Vince Santro
Guitarist Steurart was good enough to replace Don Felder in the Eagles. That is saying something.
♥
She has the same bass in her voice like her daddy did but more softer.
❤️🌎🌎🌎🙏🙏🙏
Albert Lee and hogans heroes do a great version of this song.
Steuart Smith
Any genre, Smith, Walsh, Gill, Urban, Osborne, and others! He is a complete guitarist!
So who is the drummer ? anybody
Overlooked and under rated performance ,

Thank you very much
who is the guitarist?
The album version is slower than this and much more potent.
looks like it's playing on an old VCR
Yes the tracking flicker along the bottom says that
Can't think of anyone offhand who could have done a better job with this song. Juice Newton? Patty Loveless?
I can hear Trisha Yearwood singing this. She did fantastic when she covered “Seven Year Ache”. This song however was made for Rosanne’s voice. It’s absolutely perfect.
Great song. And it’s interesting that she got a hit with a song without a hook.
Damn, Roseanne has to be at least 5' 4". She is a tall lady!
Great song, great singer. But this version, is playing too fast.
100th comment
I told John at the kitchen table. It’s a hit. I never liked her voice
Too fast temp damn it!
It's the live version, it's generally faster than the studio version.
"O" is for OBAMA! :-)
Steuart Smith!!
this guitar player owns this, who is he
