Internal and lateral thoracic (or mammary) arteries

- There are internal and external mammary arteries, and internal and lateral thoracic arteries. They're the same things, but their names have changed over the years.
Let's look at where these arteries are, where they run, how they get their names, and why they're often not considered as a pair.
Once we've looked at this anatomy we'll be able to work out how a collateral circulatory route may form with coarctation (narrowing) of the aorta.

Your teaching style is better than most anatomy teachers ive come across
I started watching your videos in the beginning of my 1st year and i loved them and will إنشاء الله krrp watching.
Your explanation of collateral blood flow along the branches of the LITA has helped me understand the finding of rib notching with coarctation. Thank you!
We all in Iraqi medical collages watch your helpful videos, thank you very much sir 🌺
The easiest way ever to clear at these complex site....I m so thankful to you..

You are a life saver...sending you respect from Saudi 🇸🇦
Maybe an interesting topic: anatomy of varices and caput medusae in relation to liver cirrhosis. I almost forgot all the veins and collaterals in the thoracic/abdominal region that may play a role in these symptoms. Greetings from Germany! Vielen Dank für die tollen Anatomy-Videos 😁
Superb 🎉
Thank you for another great video!
Absolutely amazing. Thank you
Thanks a lot! Just took out a thoracic drain put by somebodyelse and now the patient developped a rapid massive hemothorax
What an amazing way of teaching , thank you 💜💜💜💜💜
This is a very interesting channel, and it reminds me of Life Drawing, (when we had to build models of the human form).
That was so awesome thank you so much ! I have an anatomy exam and did not get this before! Your the best
Thank you very much I am from Iraq too 😊. I really like you channel you covered everything . Thank you again
You’re a life saviour!!!!💙
U r great teacher of anatomy 👍🏼😍
Dr Sam you're the best
Yes, it is funky!
Thank you! I work in cardiac surgery. We take down the internal mammary arteries as bypass grafts. The lateral thoracic artery however hides more under the pectoralis muscle (I hope). When we put in chest drains, we use the triangle of safety between pectoralis muscle and latissimus. About a patients hand down from the highest point of the axilla in the anrerior axillary line. Never caudal to the mamilla. We push away the serratus muscle and the intercostal muscles until we penetrate the parietal pleura. However, if the lateral thoracic artery would run there, I'd have damaged it several times. But that never happened in about 60+ cases. (or as a surgeon would say: it would have found me). Do you have cadaver studies on its course?
Yes, that lateral thoracic artery pipe cleaner is too lateral. It should be up against pectoralis minor. I still don't have a model on which I can lift up pectoralis major and should have demonstrated this on the other side. Its origin is variable but its course is fairly reliable. It is absent in about 3% of people. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24281130/
ThankYou so much!

1:55 Internal Thoracic Artery (originating from the Subclavian artery)
6:22 Lateral Thoraracic Artery/External Mammary Arter (originating from the Axillary artery)
Does this mean that the internal thoracic artery supply blood of the superior part of the breast and medial side of the breast
