I am a grandmother who has worn only dresses for many years. Here are some tips for wearing dresses in the winter where gets cold. The first layer on my legs is a comfy pair of tights. I prefer ones that are european made and have a mixture of cotton , wool or cashmere in them. I have found these online. I find nice soft thigh high woolen socks to go over the tights and and I wear a pair of bloomers, which I make from marino wool long johns that I cut so that they don't show below the dress.
Combined with nice cozy sweaters and coats, I am warm! ❤

I think it's quite easy to be casual in a skirt/dress - cotton, loosely fitted dress with footless tights, trainer socks and converse in summer, and leggings, thick socks and ankle boots in winter. Dresses lend themselves more to layering.

Do you know there are about 30 countries in Europe ? Makes no sense to say that you have been to Europe. We European women are completely different one from another. (And even within the same nation, although I would argue that we French women all tend to wear minimal makeup/simple hairstyles/outfits and that is a true stereotype)

This! I'm originally from a small town in a third world country and suddenly going to Europe really opened my eyes on how much women can get dolled up, they all seemed ready to appear on live TV lol. I relate so much to the feeling overdressed! That is a biggie for me. A few years back I tried to transition into skirts and dresses all at once and it really did set me back because of the identity shift and legalism in my circle, but I still want to get back into wearing more now several years later! I am loving this video Abbey!

I also wanted to say another practical tip I've found is find dresses that flatter your body shape! I find this makes all the difference for me. For years I didn't know my body type and still learning what looks good vs. What is unflattering! I don't mean to show off your body obviously, but it really has helped me fo figure out my body type so I can pick items that make me feel good and still look modest.

Lovely presentation and I agree 100%. I have always enjoyed being a woman. I was in Vienna Austria years ago and my Austrian friends invited me to a summer afternoon function in the hills outside the city. I asked what are you wearing and they said jeans and blazer. I wore a favourite black off the shoulder cotton and lace dress . I don’t own jeans. The friends looked surprised when they saw me and while at the event someone asked me if I am an Opera singer. I went to the function in what I liked to wear and I enjoyed myself

About 9 years ago I was at goodwill and saw a dress that I liked and I bought it. It was a black cotton stretch dress with straps and it flaired somewhat at the bottom. It was not tight, it fit comfortable so I wore it to my daughter's birthday and to my surprise I was given many compliments. The dress was not fancy just a black casual dress. I was very happy and felt great so I went back to Goodwill and bought a couple more. It took a bit of trial and error to find dresses that fit my shape and height but in time I have collected several good looks. Dresses don't have to be formal looking or like your going to church or a party. A shift dress and a maxi or summer dress are the kinds I've stuck with because they are comfortable and suite my figure. You don't have to dress in frills or crazy fancy fabrics unless you really want those styles but can use some simple styles that will make you look great. Don't be intimidated by switching to dresses find some tshirt dresses to start off with or sweater dresses if you live in cooler weather. You can also find maybe a maxi dress and wear it once and a while which are great at hiding any figure flaws. Believe me it has been so nice to just put on a dress and shoes and go about my day without tucking in blouses, zipping tight pants and in my weather , feeling hot. I know alot of women would really also like the fact that laundry is much less a hassle because there is less clothes to wash. Simply put women could really benefit from trying on and using dresses because they are comfortable, inexpensive if you shop cheap and less of a hassle to figure out what to wear. Try it out ... I can guarantee you won't go back to pants.

As a child I hated wearing dresses and skirts, as a young women I wore them rarely and mostly in summer to stay cool, and now in my fifties I started hating to wear pants lol. I'm thinking of even getting short dresses I can wear with leggings for things like hiking. It's a matter of wanting to feel comfortable, literally and feel attractive and not wanting my hips squashed with ill fitting material anymore. For some women this is about filling a feminine role but that's not really how I see it, although I don't have a lot of "masculine" interests I happen to be good at hammering nails for example. One day I realized that dressing like a guy or wearing a frilly dress makes a zero percent difference to hitting the nail on the head. Anyway it's really good to see more girls and women getting back to dresses.

Hello beautiful! It has been almost a year since I started wearing only maxi dresses and omg, I love it! I wish I could have started earlier but the problem was that long dresses was not that available and if they were then price would be WAY too high. So, one day I happily discovered shein and finally I could find long dresses that are colorful and have reasonable price. I wish I didn't have to buy from shein because I know they don't treat their workers the best but girl...what choice do I have? To make dresses myself? Maybe, but I don't know how and here in Denmark you can't even find material in colors, we have all mainly black, white and beige....I am not about that life. So yeah, from the day I discovered shein, I have been wearing dresses in all 4 seasons. Sometimes I have to be creative and make dresses wearable because most of them tend to be quite transparent, so I layer up. And the last thing that I want to say - we don't have to have a special reason for wearing or doing what we like, the reason itself that we like it, is special enough. P.S. in my profile picture you can see me wearing saree, I have so many of those, this is just another long dress option for me, and no, I am not from India, originally from Latvia, living in Denmark. :)

I am trying to lose 40 pounds in the next 5 months. I can count on one hand how many times I have worn a dress in my life. But I feel a conviction that I need to start dressing like a women. I have to buy all new clothes when I drop the rest of this weight so what better time than now? I am considering cold turkey. Sometimes though, when I set my mind on something (like this diet) I just know I can do it. This last year I gave up FB after over a decade if having it. I gave up cursing (ex sailor...didn't curse a day in my life until I joined the navy). I gave up drinking any alcohol, not even on occasion. This week is stopped drinking cream and sugar in my coffee cold turkey. I can do the cold turkey thing if I have a stubborn mind frame on it. I think I have that mind frame on dresses and feminine outfits. I do live on a farm though and it gets cold here so jeans might be allowed for a while. And what to do about the boots issue? I need a boot that can be practical on the farm but look decent in a skirt.... 5.5 months and my weight loss journey should be at maintain level and dress buying will commence. I have told my sister and my best friend and my husband already. I can't wait to feel comfortable being feminine and not a lumberjack lol I am sooo happy I just found your channel!

Update: Day 29 of my journey. I'm down 15 pounds and going strong. I did find my first maxi skirt last week and I wore it out in town! It was soooo comfortable. I have been missing out. Jeans can not compare.

I am now down 37 pounds! A couple days ago I went to the Goodwill and found a lot of skirts and shirts to buy. I just received some new, feminine boots to wear with them. The skirt I got before had become basically all I could wear recently because my pants and shorts kept trying to fall off. It's not easy doing farm work while holding your pants up. I have a nice dress on its way to my house also. I am pretty comfortable in skirts now and can see ditching everything else besides dresses here shortly. I still have another 17 pounds or so to go before my ultimate goal but I'm still holding the course.

I wish I didnt have to go cold turkey. I had surgery while in process of experiencing a traumatic miscarriage and the way I was cut pants just won't work for probably a year. I know from a previous surgery I wasnt able to wear normal pants for about a year and it was pretty painless switching to high wasted elastic. But even that will not work with the way I was cut. To top it off I am having the learning curve of wearing them at work because my job entails helping others raise and educate their very young children. I bought some dresses om Amazon and they arent working too well. I care for an 18 month old who likes to grab the top of my shirts and they are a bit more stretchy than I would like...seems important enough that I will have to get lace covers or something to protect my modesty. I was at work the other day and I noticed mind you after looking in the mirror probably in different lighting several times that my brand new dress was more sheer than I would have liked after only a few washes. I am only 3 weeks into this and I havent worn dresses mostly at all for Years! I was so mortified but all I could do is power through the day knowing my clients are aware of what I have been through. Dressing for the day has become completely stressful and I feel like I need to start sewing again to find something that will work for my job. This morning I cried to and and from work because I am so stressed about getting dressed and being able to stay modest. I always found pants more modest just because I wore stuff that wouldnt show skin in places that aren't appropriate. I dont have the luxury of wearing things around my waste and really am grieving pants right now as well as what happened.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I have found some decent dresses on sites like SHEIN and Temu. They are inexpensive enough that you can get a few and try different styles without breaking the bank. I will share a haul soon. Best of luck with finding dresses that you feel comfortable in. I also wear stretchy bloomer shorts under mine; maybe there are some with gentle enough waistbands for you.

I'm 51 and haven't worn pants for 20 years. I prefer dresses. My house burned a couple of months ago and I only had my pajamas. I need to buy a couple of summer dresses but am having trouble finding modest plus size dresses that are made from hot weather friendly fabric. Any recommendations?

Dainty Jewells. They also have a foundation site that is discounted and 100% of the purchase price goes to the charity. They also have sample sales.
      Skirt society is another brand.

    I’m a 20 years old Muslim woman.
in islam we’re encouraged to body our sex so if you’re male you should dress & act like male, if you’re a female you should act and dress like a female so that’s my main reason like it’s the root that I go back to, but beside that I always LOOOOOOVED dresses and skirts I’m obsessed with them pants make me so uncomfortable because of the material and how they hold and restrict my legs, I also have big hips so my jeans are not easy to get in.
I grew up doing what others do
not taking in consideration my body type, my preferences but now I want to wear what I like, what makes me comfortable and look feminine.
I believe that when u look great u feel great so you do great ❤
I wish we could all bring back modesty dresses and skirt !

I think that blouses make pants look much more feminine. So if you can wear girly blouses. Also, certain pants are more feminine, such as high waisted trousers.

There are appropriate fabrics and patterns for skirts and dresses for each season as well as colors. Pastels and florals are more appropriate for spring. Bold colors, stripes, Madras plaids and check patterns known as ginghams are best for summertime. Light weight cottons and linens are good for spring and summer.
Heavier fabrics, patterns and colors are for fall and winter. That would be tweeds, worsted wool (which can be a little itchy) and knits are appropriate for the time of year. Houndstooth, paisleys, tartan plaids are good for that time of year. Of course colors like browns, Forrest green, dark greys and navy are great for fall and winter. It’s hard to find skirts and dresses in these fabrics and prints so you may have to thrift those at places OTHER THAN Goodwill, Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul.
Polka dots can be worn year round. They come in light weight fabrics most of the time. It’s always good to have these basic colors in your wardrobe year round in heavy and lightweight fabrics; black, navy, tan, grey, white, red and cream. Heals in each of these colors will be a good base for your shoe wardrobe as well as flats and matching purses.

We should be avoiding things made in sweat shops as much as possible and the polyester dresses don't break down very well and it is better to avoid purchasing these brand new.
