Despite being teased throughout the final arc of Bleach, we never got to see Shuhei Hisagi's much anticipated Bankai - that was, until the last volume of CFYOW. With the story coming to a close, Hisagi reveals his Bankai, Fushi no Kojo, in the most desperate hour. In this video, we'll unpack what his Bankai is, how it relates back to Kazeshini, and how it redefines him as a character.

What did you think of Hisagi's Bankai? A video on the final volume of CFYOW is coming soon - I know it's been a long time. But let me know if you enjoyed his Bankai and if you felt it suited him!
He is the Shinigami who cant kill anyone. Not because he is weak, he just fears death/dying. His bankai representing a not dead-not alive state fits him, being trapped inside it kinda feels like Schrödinger's cat for me. I was also dissapointed that he wasnt using it in TYBW arc, although I think the Quincies could have absorbed Reishi to refill themselves and not die in Hisagi's bankai. Also, he is my favourite Liutenant tied with Kira.

If you're fighting a Quincy and he steals a bankai you can attack him with another bankai cuz he can only hold one at a time

I love that his bankai embodies how much he doesn't want to kill, the opponet literally has to surrender in order not to die and if the opponent wont surrender then they both perish almost as if hisagi cant live with taking a life.

I think a key point missing here, is that his Bankai allows for a period of negotiation, philsophical reflection. It allows Shuhei to fall back on his most precious gift...his memories of Tosen....to impart a philsophy to an adversary and erode their will.
I never thought of it that way but this makes the a lot of sense.

Hisagi is honestly dope. Kubo doesn't miss with most of his character designs.
He does miss when exploring those characters tho and showing off Bankai 😂

Hisagi's bankai is forcing enemies to 69 (spiritually).
CFYOW was a treat, and I'm glad it gave Shuhei his chance to shine.

people just saying it's weak and only that are missing the point. This is the bankai that fully showcases the relationship between a shinigami and it's spirit and how the personality and feelings of someone can shape their powers and influence them. Shuhei being the "perfect shinigami" who takes full responsibility over life and death and his bankai perfectly reflecting that.
Shunsui follows the ahinigami philosophy more so than many others, captains included.
His honor and morals put people like Yamamoto to shame

@@justifano7046 It doesn't suck, it's gimmicky. If he's going against someone more powerful, he can level the Reiatsu level and the person besides him can deal a killing blow. It's a Bankai which is amazing in a situation, but not in all situations. It's not a Byakuya or Hitsugaya whose Bankai's are all rounders.

I’m a huge fan of Hisagi’s character design. He has the best design out of all of the vice captains in my opinion.

Fun Fact: in Japanese culture, pinwheels are used to symbolize death. Furthermore, it's pretty cool how Kubo combined the Japanese symbol of death and the western symbol of death (the scythe) into Shuhei's zanpakuto.

I'd have to disagree with describing him as a coward. Yes, he is afraid of his own power and yes, at his root he is a pacifist, but that doesn't make him a coward. His fear doesn't cripple him or disable him from carrying out his duties. When necessary he will fight, and he doesn't run from battles. I also didnt initially like his Bankai, but I think it does show his true natural, and it justifies his initial feelings (fearing his sword and that his weapon looks like it was meant to reap life). I think it's awesome that his opponent must sacrifice everything if they choose violence and in a sense makes it so that they to must fear their own power/weapon/"sword". It adds to his character, to try and avoid violence but if given no other choice give everything. Aside from that I agree with everything in your video.
I agree with this sentiment, Hisagi isn't really a coward he just thinks of himself as one. A Coward would run away the first chance they get but no matter how scared Hisagi gets he always stands up to fight for his beliefs.

@@umelgaming3177 that what makes him so human and relatable to most people from what I have read and heard. It is how we would probably feel and if anyone is int the army (??) You are going in knowing you can potentially die, ofc its natural to feel some fear nerves doubts that totally normal but calm yourself down and proceed to carry out your mssion/duty. He isnt bloodthirsty enjoy fighting like the 11squad and he isn't overpowered royal clan or a prodigy or a master mind. Hes just normal to and extend. He was also shown to play the guitar lol

I just realized that Hisagi's chain like choker and armbands are the same spots where his bankai chains wrap around him
Its also terrifying how Shuhei willingly wears a bomb around his neck.
Or is it a subconscious choice since if he went shikai he can just reattach his head if that bomb exploded by accident.

Hisagi Is a straight up GOAT. Love his character. That Bankai sound so cool and fits him perfectly
He is one of those shinigami that really defines a shinigami (God of death) aesthetically.
Seems like Hisago was subconsciously using his dormant abilities. Due to the fact his relationship with his Zanpaktou wasn’t on the best terms. It’s a wild sword that he really didn’t mesh with at first

@@Snzn18 that’s exactly how o see it. Both were so repulsed by their true nature their abilities were halted. Both could only summon them in times of dire need. Both Zanpaktou spirits were prideful about their abilities, bloodthirsty as hell, but incredibly confident, hard on yet protective of their masters

I really like Hisagi's Bankai. I think it fits him very well and it really reflects Hisagi's personality and core beliefs. I really need to actually read Can't Fear Your Own World. I haven't read any of it yet.
First book is a chore to get though IMO because it's all set-up, but the second and third were pretty good. Definitely recommend as there is a lot of lore

I was hoping Love would take up Komamura's place, since he was the former captain of 7th division. But no. Let the guy with unknown shikai, bankai and basically no fight scenes take that place.

I remember buying these novels when got my first job a few months ago and I still remember them fondly. The lore in these novels are so good and I hope they get animated as a movie or a couple of seasons for the anime.
I hope they add the novel as a follow up for when they animate the TYBW, I mean theyre animating one arc which to be fair is a pretty long one, but if it does well enough, if they were to make a season after this one, it would be CFYOW followed by the new Hell Arc assuming that gets continued before the anime wraps up again
@@youhaveayds8975 in case you didn’t know, recently a new bleach domain was registered (I assume for the bleach anime) but the contract for the domain ends in 10+ years. I’m certain we will get novel content and even more
@@youhaveayds8975 I m pretty sure that after the TYBW anime ends, they will announce an anime adaptation for CFYOW, the novel is purely amazing and for them it will make a good amount of money
I previously stated that Hisagi and Kensei should’ve fought Cang Du together. Cang’s Schrift: I - The Iron would be amazing against Kensei’s Bankai: Tekken Tachikaze or ‘Iron Fist Severing Wind’ in a hand-to-hand battle we haven’t seen since Yoruichi vs. Soi Fon.
ALSO, Cang Du’s philosophy of ‘whatever lives together should die together’ is legit a perfect description of Shuhei’s Bankai as both he and his opponent are having their spiritual pressures drained by the chain. Cang stealing Shuhei’s Bankai in a scenario where he’s already achieved it before TYBW would be so good.
Plus Shuhei and Cang look similar so that’s another cool visual…

That fodder captain trained the man that would go onto inspire Hisagi. Also Kenseo is kind of slept on. Got mismatched in both his major outings but his bankai dps is pretty nuts.

He is one of them. You could make the claim most to all the vizards are fodder. Aside from Shinji who himself was important in training Ichigo, but has been put aside plenty.
Rose, Kensei, Lisa are definite FODDER captains. It is what it is. They can have story implications and still be that.

Hisagi is one of the best characters in Bleach, his story is pretty good, i've been a fan since he was shown in the Rukia/Renji flashback, with him getting injured and becoming afraid of hollows, even though he was very boastful early on and was thought off as a prodigy.
"Hisagi? oh yeah, that badass dude that shows up sometimes when shi* goes wild and has do hold everything togheter somehow and nobody ever talks about! Yeah, that guy is awesome."
Seriously, hisagi was always underrated for no reason, everytime he shows up, he is the guys who takes the bomb and somehow takes the responsability and nobody ever talks about him, he did so much stuff that represents what shinigami do and knows but no one else does.
So his ability, as I understand it, basically means that he can only win with bankai if his opponent gives up? Otherwise the fight would end in a draw as both parties would die?
Yeah, pretty much, unless he is able to yeet at the last second and heals himself with Shikai Kazeshini and lets the enemy die
But that ability is broken, because he can sacrifice himself, if alone, to kill any enemy who is a monstrous threat, say Yhwach or Aizen
It drains him and his opponent, so in a 1v1 or however many enemies he snags, it only works as a way to forcibly end the fight. If he has a single ally however, even a generic Soul Reaper, that ally can then mop up once Hisagi weakens them enough. Otherwise yeah, if he were forced to, Husagi could keep weakening them all to death, himself included.

@@extonjonas6820 i heard Hikone is a candidate for the next Soul King so they must've been as powerful as Ichigo. So i think Hisagi's bankai ignores the level of reiatsu of his opponents. Heck, I think it was designed for Hisagi to be able to take on far stronger opponents.
@@extonjonas6820 It's not a matter of them ignoring it, the Bankai is automatic, as in it ensnares them when Shuhei activates it and throws them in the 'ring'
They are immediatly thrown to Shuhei's level in terms of power, because sharing is caring :)
I always assumed Izuru Kira would also have a Bankai- when we last saw him he seemed to almost be half dead about to fight one of the Quincy and we never got a resolution.
If he had a bankai, I'd imagine it would reflect damage and/or abilities back to the opponent since Kira's shikai sorta points back at himself
He gets patched back together by Mayuri using the remnant souls of the shinigami that died in the 1st invasion. Hes physically alot stronger now and he takes out Shaz Dominoe before he can kill all of the central 46
Kubo said that Kira has a bankai and that its "disgusting to look at". I imagine he was supposed to use it against Lillie when he landed in SS, but Kubo had no time left.

Kazeshini is the name. Fushi is one of its abilities
Yes, it can affect multiple. Yes it divides spiritual energy so they would run out at the same time. No notable loops holes in the novel. Even destroying the Bankai doesn't work as it just pull spiritual energy from the affected parties to restore itself.
It doesn't seem to have any weaknesses, only restrictions.

It would be a great ability for fighting someone strong in the presence of allies, but terrible in just about any other context. Imagine fighting someone fanatical who would rather kill themselves then let the enemy themselves survive. Even against someone like Tosen during the FK arc, Aizen or anyone else would still not have hesitated to kill an alley in that position right alongside Hisagi.
Now if it could affect multiple people, I think that would change things significantly.
It's implied that it an affect multiple people. Also he can de-activate it whenever he wants so there's not really a worry about dying on accident.
@@samuelcooper3664 I mean, I remember it having some sort of vibe for those around watching, but it was never outright stated he can grab several people, right? I assume it probably can, but we don't see it do that, so it's hard to know for sure (from what I recall).
And sure, he could deactivate it and maybe get a slight heal buff from sharing their power. But, at that point, what would have been the purpose in using it at all? This seems like it's better for specific narrative moments than it does general usage to me. Which is great (I love this bankai for Hisagi), but I do think it kills the hype a bit (unless I'm just not as creative as Kubo).

It’s a nice nod to it/foreshadowing.
Along with his other face paint reflecting yin & yang, life & death or whatever balance of two ideas that you want to use.
Perfect example of form reflecting function.
What I find even more amazing is that we have all seen something very much like hisagi's bankai before, it doesn't really do anything new at all. Hearing it described caused me to flash back to the Hell verse movie and how the denizens of hell were also both eternally chained and couldn't die, All be it with an eventual limit. His bankai mirrors hell in bleach wich I was hoping for as it fits the confliction of his pacifist views and his constant connection to killing and death as a job. As well, just like hell sided with Ichigo seemingly in part due to his insurance on purity of task. Hisagi's zanpactou granting him some form of amnesty from death makes total sense. If it was any other personality, such a power may be seen as both unfair and undeserved possibly both in universe as much as out but given his convictions, fears, personal desires, and even self hate, Hisagi's power can only be such a fitting mirror of the in universe's depiction of death, rebirth, and even to an extent hell. Once more, his shikai having such a power and going totally unnoticed would make complete sense given his character as he would be the last person on the battlefield to be seriously injured with his caution.
I'm not sure if this was mentioned before but his shikai's true nature was hinted in the same arc it was revealed. Hisagi takes multiple beatings and attacks that if would not outright kill him should at least put him down for the count. Ayon crushes his body (though kira was healing his focus was mostly on rangiku), Tosen slashes him, and later skewers him. Each time he gets back up and appears to fight later.
Magna’s ability that he used against Dante in BC is very VERY similar to Shuhei’s Bankai, I guess Tabata must’ve gotten inspiration from the CFYOW novels.
Was gonna comment about the similarities of both abilities. Where both fighters are on equal power and the one with the strongest will/physical power or other factor would be the winner

Weirdly, Hisagi’s Bankai could also potentially be used to protect his friends or preserve his allies before aid can reach them.
If he has an ally who has been heavily injured, he could use his Bankai to share reiatsu with them to heal them, or use his Bankai on say, Ichigo, while the latter is fighting to keep him fighting while Hisagi tries to keep out of danger
Actually, no on the first part - it was stated in the novel that his bankai does not heal injuries sustained prior to its activation.

So Shuhei ended up being the quintessential shinigami? His power represents them more than any other that I can think of when explained this way. The cycle of life and death.
Rukia's shikai, was also slightly retconned during her fight with As Nodt, it went from straight ice manipulation to Cold manioulation which isn't exacly the same in case you were wondering.
Thats probably because she trained in the royal palace and her abilities grew more towards her actual zanpaktou spirit rather than an extension of them.

For all of Bleach’s faults, Kubo is really knocks what he does out of the park.
He deserves more respect. It’s frustrating that so many Bankai were hyped up but we never saw, is better then coming out with a subpar painting.
You clearly never read the manga when it was still coming out Kubo got hate for wasting an entire page on things like a foot,hand,ect really weird.
without the anime making bleach popular it would have been cancelled one of the only times that anime did better than manga and last arc of bleach got rushed at the end as well the hollows should have joined in the fight 3rd espada was forgotten as well.

Hisagi was my favorite character since he was introduced in Hinamoris flashback. When he was merely still in the academy.
The respectably professional and serious soul reaper he has always been.
You could tell he mattered even more with Kensei being obviously related to his backstory.
I wouldn't say he's necessarily entirely fearful of battle and killing.
He disdains it. But his bravery and focus has him completely quell and retain the fear.
He is able to fight perfectly while having fear in general. But I think he had surpassed that fear for duty a long time before obtaining his shikai.
Ofcourse he lives by the ideal to fear your own blade.
But I think he is fearful of death in the sense that most people are of the great unknown in passing.

I think what Kensei said made sense if I'm not mistaken aren't all people who had their bankai stolen had the bankai information recorded by the Quincy which is why they could steal. If we had new bankais there would be no record of them for the Quincy to steal them.
That was just Yamamoto's theory. Yhwach crushes that by stating it's not the case and the only reason Royd didn't even try to steal Zanka no Tachi was because he wasn't strong enough to handle it. Only the real Yhwach could do it.
@@corruptangel6793 but. Talking terms of it not being strong but the fact that it's a new bankai. I means when the captain hollowfied their Bankai yeah it's poisonous to the Quincy but it they receive them back as it's now new version of their Bankai compared to before?
@@obrians-brown1307 no, the Captains got their bankai back because the Quincies couldn't hold onto them after they were tainted by Hollow reiatsu. I don't think you realize just how toxic Hollow reiatsu is to Quincies.
The stolen Bankai don't change in anyway beyond adding that drop of Hollow reiatsu

Hisagi and Kira are two of my favorite vice captains. I like Hisagi's design and Kira's abilities in shikai. Also they're both criminally underused in both the manga and anime. I'd have loved to see all the vc's bankai animated
I like that theme of soul searching and his want of becoming a true Shinigami. Still him enduring that brutal training is commendable while his actions in CFYOW only add to it, even if it brought him dangerously close to being 'silenced' by Yoruichi for digging into the truth about the war and the Spirit King. Hisagi is someone to trust on the battlefield and an all around badass.
Shuhei is just a bloody good guy. I will be so happy if he makes captain after Hell Arc

The fear of Hisagi's Bankai is existantial. Fundamental. It isn't violent, it isn't grotesque or twisted. It's pure in essence. The primal fear of inevitability, of un-death, of eternal nothingness, of imprisonment in oblivion. It's very similar to the scene with Dr. Strange and Dormammu. Dormammu kills Strange over and over and over again but it accomplishes nothing. He's still prisoner. He's still frozen in that one moment. Thus, fighting Hisagi's bankai is absolutely terrifying, even more so if you're on a schedule. He can just do it forever, potentially.

It's so very strange how similar his journey is to Ichigo's, barring the obvious. His relationship with his zanpakuto is an awful lot like how Ichigo viewed White, though while White wanted to push Ichigo to be stronger so he can protect himself and those he cherishes, Kazeshini wants to push Shuhei to realizing the purpose of his will and his zanpakuto so he can truly embody the meaning of a Shinigami and Bleach as a whole. And it also falls in line with his want to not have to end a fight with death. Basically the ultimate similarly between both zanpakuto spirits is that they want to give their user what they desire even if they don't consciously realize it. To attain one's Bankai their Zanpakuto spirit must submit to them, and since the blade is the Shinigami as well, they are submitting to themselves, A revelation if you will. The conscious and the subconscious merge into one, and this is probably the case for all other Shinigami except for Aizen who probably rejects his zanpakuto spirit for believing it doesn't understand him, who's to say if he learned acceptance after his fight with Ichigo. Thus it may very well be unlikely he has a Bankai, but I digress.
I thought when we saw kira beating Lillie that Hisagi would came against Gerarld and use his bankai, and knowing what his bankai does it could’ve been the perfect lock of none of them being able to ever die

Would gerard's schrift work if say he refused to surrender? Hisagi's bankai works by giving them a pool of riatsu between them and if the opponent surrenders then they live if not they die. So if say Gerard refused to surrender and he was "killed" would his miracle activate and save him?
Kubo might've had something like that planned but probably ran out of time and gave the popular captain's more screen time instead.
Not sure how that would work because stuff like Gerad are pretty unique.. Litth Gerad Pendera Hasthwalth and askain were pretty much "gods warriors " by all means... Being stupidly powerful specifically with Gerad who was the heart of the soul king.. I doubt hisgai with bankei can do anything... .I mean the power difference is just too damm high

"Reap, Kazeshini". HIsagi releasing his shikai impressed everyone on the battlefield, even the captains were smirking. I then immediately knew the guy was special really.

When Hisagi is damaged/cut by an enemy, the chains absorb the enemy’s reiatsu to heal Hisagi.
When the enemy is damaged/cut by Hisagi (or by someone else) the chains absorb Hisagi’s reiatsu to heal the enemy. Hikone realizes that after his attacks are getting weaker, he’s running out of reiatsu after cutting him around 27 times plus all the reiatsu he used in the previous fights. Hikone knew he was screwed.

Hisagi’s shikai is my favorite it just looks so sick and menacing
I think it suits him because he is the "everyman's vice-captain". It levels the playingfield no matter how much of an underdog he is. And I'm sure there are limits and weaknesses to his bankai's ability, like with everyone else.
And, as with many of these "random add-ons" to the established lore, I think this fits in well with Hisagi from the manga. It explains why he is able to come back twice after being mortally wounded by Tousen in the fake Karakura town-arc, as well as how he is so effective even after being injured in other fights. He's always been one to "shrug off" damage. His zanpaktou's ability not being explained earlier I think also is suitable, as Hisagi at that point probably didn't understand his zanpaktou well enough to realize this either. I think his line "It looks like it's meant to reap life" actually sets up the reveal of its actual abilities quite well.
My favorite Lieutenant! And his shinigami is also my favorite. Even though he has a thirst for killing, he did realized a lot of thing. Especially the episode where he found a baby. It was a cute bond between him and the baby even though he doesn't like the baby. He never know what's the meaning how to protect and what to protect until he met the baby.

I think the Bankai represents this deep, instinctual fear of change. It’s the fear of letting go, symbolised by literally being chained together. It’s a state of neither life, nor death, a state of preservation
