Our latest Bleach Character Analysis focuses on the hard-working everyman Vice-Captain of the 9th Division, Shuhei Hisagi! A breakout character of the Arrancar Arc, Hisagi has gone on to become a fan-favourite, though his treatment in TYBW leaves a lot to be desired. The term Mu can be read as 6. A good shounen example of this is the GoMu GoMu no mi from One piece.(the term Gomu means Rubber but Go and Mu can also be read as 5 and 6).
I haven't read Can't fear your own world yet, but.. So far, it's his fight against Findorr. I'm sooo glad that Kubo made him get more attention compared to most Lieutenants of Gotei 13. His fight with Findorr felt way more important and special amoung the other fights that were happening during his fight. He's absoultly a favorite character!
I feel renji was In the same POSITION, though more important. He stepped up in the final saga. Learned his zans true name and honestly, rose and kensei got completely upstaged BY Renji.

Please,, I really would love to see a video on Shuei's appearance in the light novels.
I love how shuhei has the appearance of a punk bad boy, but ironically has the noble boy scout kind of personality. Also I like how shuhei has a healthy interest in rangiku , you guys notice this thing in anime where the guy is either a creepy pervert or a near aroace type that is nearly incapable of having feelings of love or lust . Shuhei is a beautiful mixture if badass and dorky .
How can you be a creep that's incapable of love or lust? Sanji can be considered creepy because he loves and lust after women. Also, to be incapable of love or lust would mean you have no interest in someone, period.

Hisagi vs Findor is still one of my favorite fights in the anime

I need that scene of Chad teaching Shuhei the guitar. I feel Bleach’s filler did a great job of making the Shinigami and humans appear more like allies and friends.
Yes but at a few times, it makes their barrier seems lesser in gravity than what is in the manga.
Like Kubo implies it that oh this is the second time Chad and Orihime had been in SS. In the anime due to too much filler it make it seems like it s a walk in the park that they can crossover to SS.
I love Shunei Hisagi. He takes his job as a lieutenant very seriously. However, he’s also hilarious. Like he’s a total goofball in some filler episodes. I also love the relationship he has with Kensei and Kira. Especially Kira because they’re legitimately bros.

He's a paragon in his own. He really got to shine in CFYOW, be it bravely stopping Hikone and Zaraki's battle and having them stand down or getting to the truth of the Spirit King and the origins of the worlds. This is exceptionally risky since the information is forbidden and Yoruichi really wanted to wipe his memory to prevent him from publicly publishing parts of the truth, her menacing tone even unnerving Kisuke. Shuhei is what Shinigami should be.

In end of CFYOW Zaraki want to fight Hisagi so he is deffinitley Strong.

Shuhei suffered from the same thing many of the Bleach characters suffered from. Not having enough time for Kubo to do what he wanted with them. In my opinion Ukitake got the worst of it. I'm glad Shuhei got the respect he deserves in CFYW. I'm hoping Ahsido makes an appearance in a novel.
For those who likely don't recognize that name i don't blame you. He was only in a filler ep in the Hueco Mundo arc. He was really interesting and his design was great too. Kubo wanted to do more with him but he kept getting rushed.
Which is a shame cause Ashido flies solo in hueco Mundo fighting off high level hollows from Menos to Adjuchas all without even knowing the name of his zanpakuto. And plus he wears of cape with the masks of hollows he's killed on it. Come oooon, that is so badass...
Ashido Kanō was supposed to become a Canon character. Kubo said he wanted him in the manga but he couldn't due to time issues. In THE Spirits Are Forever With You light novel it's revealed Kanō was a member of Squad 11 under Kenpachi Kuruyashiki, and Kurayishiki and Kyouraku still believed he was alive in Hueco Mundo around 250 years before the events of Bleach.
The only man who could've taken Shunsui's place and nobody would've complained.
He kinda locked himself into Squad 9 with that number tattoo.

I always thought it was interesting how Hisagi and Kira seemed to have parallel journeys throughout the story. Kira gets a lot of focus in the SS arc, while Hisagi gets his big moment in the FKT arc. Both are Vice-Captains of two of the traitor Captains, but while Hisagi looks up to his new Vizard Captain, Kira seemingly has no real opinon on his new Captain.
Both get very harsh treatment in the TYBW arc, but while with Hisagi it gets to the point of being played for laughs in the end, Kira is actually killed and then gets a genuinely badass reintroduction.
And, they would both be chosen as the main character for a light novel, which gave them crucial character development, as well as serving to flesh out the lore of the series.
It kinda feels like within the manga, that Kira actually ended up being more of that edgy, grim, depressing character archetype that people thought Hisagi was going to be.
I do like Hisagi, and I am happy that he got his time to shine in the CFYOW novels. I do hope they get animated, after the TYBW is finished. A video on his character journey in those books would be nice. Great video as always!
Hisagi being a punching bag for all of TYBW gotta be one of the most unfortunate yet hilarious decisions made in the TYBW arc

I thought the 69 tattoo was a reference to the 69th Rukongai District. Doesn't Kubo make it a point to mention that before Kensei saves him? I thought it was a moment for Hisagi to see that Kendei was from the same Rukongai District as he was
Shunsui is one of the many characters that need more focus.
Indeed. His interview with Kisuke in CFYOW was interesting to say the least. Urahara standing up for him when Yoruichi wanted brainwash him and keep the truth of the world's origins hidden was heartwarming in it's own way while reminding us that Yoruichi is an assassin beneath her usual pleasantness as was Kisuke.

Shuhei is one of those characters that fit the gritty angst drippiness vibe that is Bleach perfectly.
Hisagi is my Top 3 Character in Bleach.
It’s funny because except FKT in every arc he was beaten by anyone.
And now we know he is so op,Top2 Lieutenant and One of the best written Character.

I just realised, the hollow that gives Hisagi his scar looks a hell of a lot like a tardigrade. Neat.
Shuhei Hisagi was always one of the supporting characters I had an interest in since the academy chapters. Kubo gave him more and more development and I felt it was too good to be true, I really invested in him. Then he was repeatedly the punching bag of the Quincy arc, and I felt so bad. Then he was further reduced to comic relief. Like come on, Hisagi is supposed to be the badass mature senpai. I still look forward to read CFYOW once I find vol 1.
This is my favorite quote from Hisagi "Have you learned to fear yet? It looks like we're finally evenly-matched." Hisagi vs Findor shows that the 9th division knows the price of battle and war, The Fake Kakura Town arc has issues but Hisagi steals the show. His and Konomoras fight with Tosen are some of my favorite moments in Bleach.
I always enjoyed Hisagi. Cool design, straight-forward personality, seemed well-rounded in fighting abilities and level-headed. When there are monsters like Kenpachi around, it’s important to keep in mind that Lieutenants in bleach are still more powerful than 99% of soul reapers. He’s the sort of character that seems carved out to be on the captain path.
Bro…if you ONLY watched the fights and content he shows up for, you’d think he was one of the most amazing lieutenants in the series. He just gets so little spotlight to be awesome, but when he does, it’s incredibly good
He had one solid fight in the main and that's it.
@@PrinceRevolver I’m not limiting this to canon episodes. But also, you’re forgetting his fight with komamura vs tousen. That fight was amazing as well.
I’m a big fan of Hisagi, I found his character journey to be super interesting and his abilities to be awesome. I’m also a sucker to cheesy badass lines, so a lot of the scenes with him in the FKT arc are personal favorites of mine.
Out of all the lieutenants who lost a captain, whether through death or betrayal, Shuhei definitely got the best character treatment.
He actually gets an arc directly linked to the loss of his captain that allows for some interesting character growth.
Are we count Isane for losing a Captain?

@@CaptainKotetsu Isane simply never got character moments in the first place. I think Kira is the one who got the worst treatment because he was relatively popular, had some panel time, interesting if not amazing fights, and an actual personality. Yet his character goes nowhere and he's essentially discarded in the TYBW as fodder.
I really hope that Hisagi's bankai gets a spotlight in the TYBW anime

After the way Kubo has been treating him during the Thousand year blood war arc, especially that arc. Like jesus it was visord level done dirty. He definitely needed the spotlight in CFROW. And he was able to use his bankai. Wonder if the anime will show his bankai like Shinji

Hisagi deserves a captaincy role more than Renji because he can actually use kido as shown with his fight with Findorr.
Hisagi is still one of my favorite characters and has one of the cooler designs in Bleach
I wish we had gotten more interactions between Shuhei and Kensei. From what we got, it really seemed like a “never meet your heroes” relationship.
Like, Shuhei idolized Kensei for so long, then when he finally gets to work with him, Kensei is the antithesis of everything he had come to believe in, and honestly, kind of a prick.
Shuhei probably imagined Kensei as someone heroic, someone thoughtful and introspective like Tosen, someone who embodied the values of the ninth division Shuhei knows, and realizing Kensei is actually a callous meathead would’ve been a massive shock.
I think that's unfair on Kensei. He is a very strict guy and very demanding. I feel that he is more of a military sergeant than the idea of what we have of a Gotei 13 captain. You need guys like that in every organization to keep people from slacking.
Tosen was a more introspective guy, sure, but also betrayed the values he taught Hisagi. Kensei, on the other hand, has always been loyal, to the point of coming back to the Gotei 13 after being exiled by them, and cared enough for Hisagi's development during the war.
I do like that they are different and clash. And I would have loved to see more of them as a duo as well.

Yeah, Hisagi is one of my top characters in Bleach. And while it's probably the common answer, yeah it was the fight with Findor. It jus changed the game for me as a Bleach fan and really beheld me to his character.
Shuhei should've been promoted after Tosen defected. He is stronger than Kensei and more deserving especially when he gets a bankai. He also takes out his former Captain with Kommamura and has been doing the duties of the Captain even when Kensei was in charge. He has the mindset of a Captain and deserves way more shine, and doesn't deserve to be shafted the way he is in the series. I believe this is why Kubo focused on Shuhei in the CFYOW novels, especially since he gets done dirty (along with Shinji) in the TYBW arc
his bankai is the ultimate equalizer in a stalemate-specific way but he's not stronger than Kensei just bc of it lol. & in CFYOW Shunsui called him a capt candidate now & Shuuhei fretted at the mere idea of that & said no thx so he has no desire to be one either

Shuuheu in cfyow is also still very deferential to Kensei & even in that lil poem notes he doesn't have the courage of him. plus Mashirou whilst unmasked is already called relative to current Shuuhei too in cfyow. she trained tenaciously during the 101 yr hiatus it was noted so masked up she's a major prob
@@Crunchysopa52Yeah people are calling him strong but imo he's the opposite of that. He can't really beat anyone that is equal to him or stronger with his Bankai all he can do is stalemate and hope he has backup to clean up, then if he's stronger than the guy he's fighting his Bankai is useless.
He's not exactly "strong" but he's a good teammate to have though.

I was so happy seeing hisagi gaining bankai I mean well reading and seeing that image in CANT fear your world if they animate that in an anime that would be an unforgettable moment and something else if kubo allows it it should give the lieutenants a motivation to actually step up to the plate too honestly fushyo kojyo is one of my favorite bankai now
OK so in defense of shuhei's bullshit dialogue where he says that kensei has no right to badmouth tousen . I'm positive that shuhei is unaware of what tousen did to kensei and only knows of tousens betrayal when he was tousen's vice captain .

I love the way you make videos and how passionate to talk about bleach. Hisagi is my favorite character ❤ thank you for making this review. When are you planning to talk about high school Ichigo's friends? I think Asano and Tatsuki should have a bigger roll in the history. 🎉
I think his shikai does need that extra ability. A shikai is usually a new shape and one ability. Without revealing some ability it feels incomplete to me. I would like it better if it wasn't just pure healing, I think I'd rather have it be that it chains together his body so he can't be cut down. Something that only works on external cuts or piercing so it makes it a little weaker and more fitting for a shikai.
I love and am stealing Hisagi's schpiel about fearing your own ability to cause death for an NPC in a DnD game I run.
Basically there's a character who always starts shaking and runs whenever a fight starts to break out, and the player characters have insulted her for it. Later it will be revealed that she isn't afraid of being killed, but rather having to kill someone else again.
I love the scene with Aoga, it's such a down-to-earth and human moment for a big and bombastic Shonen manga. It reminds me a lot of Doctor Knox's scene with his family in Fullmetal Alchemist.
Always thought he would look cool with real long straight black hair to fit the motorcycle and guitar look

My favourite moment from him has to be stabing Tosen on the head. I wish the upcoming second season of TYBW anime gives him a little more of a fighting chance.
Hisagi like a lot of characters unfortunately have a cool factor yet we rarely get to see other elements to them.
We actually get to see a lot of Hisagi's thoughts, flaws, and insecurities. Such as his fear to fight, his issues with his Zanpakuto, and the feeling of betrayal he went through with Tosen.
Completely unrelated note, I’ve always wondered why Omaeda was the lieutenant of squad 2
He doesn’t really showcase anything that would be worthy of him being the second to the highest ranking in his squad
His zanpakuto Gegetsuburi literally shattered when Ichigo punched it back in the Soul Society arc

His dad was the former Vice Captain (and was actually capable) as well as being very rich, so he basically bought his sons way in 😅
I loved Hisagis design from the get go, his weapons specifically reminded me of one used during Ruroni Kenshin’s opening song animation and we never got to see them in the show so when I got them in Bleach it was like a 90s wish being fulfilled.
I wish Gin would get a Light Novel where we got to hear his thoughts and him playing 4D chess with Aizen to get his/Rangiku's get back. I think it's one of the most badass things anybody does in the manga and it deserves his perspective. Even if he didn't succeed, how much self control and knowing exactly what to do so even Aizen for nearly a century is like idk what this guy's deal is just seems so cool to me.
Hisagi versus Findorr's fight in the anime is just perfect, one of the best fights in the series.
If you're not afraid of your own power, if you don't understand that you can hurt/kill, and that there's a part of you that can and will kill if you let it, you aren't a whole person, in my opinion.
EDIT: Oh yeah... that fight with Tousen is a major gut punch.

Definitely the episode I was looking forward for your reaction the most. I feel like this is how the Almighty manifests in Ichigo specifically. Aren’t Reio’s eyes vertical and horizontal rather than diagonal?
I believe a lot of his popularity comes from the amazing treatment of his fight against findorr. Which is hilarious since if i recall correctly in the anime his first scene replaced him with a random schmuck who was easier to draw because i assume the anime team thought he was a background npc. So the anime went from completely removing him from a scene to giving his inconsequential nobody fight better treatment than ichigo vs aizen the most climactic fight of the whole series. There are a lot of things to hate the old anime for.

Maybe it's just me but Hisagi's design looks like the singer Adam Ant. It looks really consistent to me. Especially the face paint. Damn someone comfirm this please this theory consumes me😀
Remember hisagi hasn’t mastered ban Kia so we haven’t seen him at his peak with his ability.

Character analysis for Shuhei in the light novel Cant Fear Your Own World would be great
Honestly when I started Bleach I didn't pay much attention to him (though to be fair it was 2006 and I was 10 so I didn't really pay attention to the side characters). But as the first part of the anime was coming to an end I was a teenager so I paid more attention to characters like Hisagi. After I saw his fight against Findor I realized he was a character that was more interesting than I originally thought. Now he's one of my favorite characters in Bleach to the point where I was willing to read CFYOW which says a lot as I never really read light novels.
There is a need to zanpakutos having passive abilities and not just an exterior output abilities.
Like Ichigo's speed boost with Tensa. Or Oni mode for Zaraki on bankai, and Shuhei having a passive chain healing is cool too.
I do think he's a tiniy bit overdesigned, but his take on battles and fighting is fascinating and really elevates him above many others in my eyes.
I really came to like his character after reading Can't Fear Your Own World.
Something I'd love to see as a what-if is what if the captains that went to hueco mundo were swapped? So instead of mayuri, byakuya and kenpachi going, it was soi-fon, toshiro, and kyoraku or ukitake perhaps (assuming unohana goes either way)
To me, Tommy, Mr.Tommo- (😅 ima tomtoo) the two most alike of zanpakuo, in their Bankais are Shuhei and Koryaku's. Nightmarish stories that have prologue, crescendo, climax and resolution. Shuhei and Hisagi realase bankai regretfully, ruefully. A win, possible, a nightmare's price for victory. 🎉
