  • Uncertain as to whether this is a true T. streptophylla or a hybrid, I'll have to wait for it to bloom. My guess is that even though it was purchased as a streptophylla, it's likely a T. streptophylla x T. intermedia or equivalent. Whatever the case, the care will be similar and it debuts as #352 of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.
    Featured plant:
    Tillandsia streptophylla

It is a true streptopylla, but the plant in your hand is a pup and it is "over hydrated", thats why the leaves look so stiff. A streptophylla pup typically does not achive that nice curly look a seedling would achive, unless you harvest the pup from the motherplant in a very early growth stage, by the way the same is true for Tillandsia xerographica and many more. Just reduce the water supply and your plant will curl up a little more. But be aware that it will never look as curly as a streptophylla seedling would do ;)

I think this is a true T. streptophylla! There are a few forms and interesting cultivars within this species. A hybrid with intermedia will have an elongated body like a tall fountain. (see T. 'Curly Slim'). Your streptophylla is very well-hydrated and taken care of, so the leaves are looking like it's waving! - explained by your dunking method of watering. I live in a very humid tropical country so misting is sufficient for me. I wouldn't quite grow it in full sun because I've had sunburn on my plant quite easily in those conditions, especially if water droplets are still on the leaves. Xeric species with even thicker trichomes like xerographica and harrisii would tolerate a lot of light but streptophylla might enjoy indirect sunlight with a bit of shade much better (close to phal's level)

Thank you for saying this, also watering less frequently will give you better curls, but it's fun to soak and watch it expand

I just got this one. She's so beautiful.. mine came so curly.. there are open varieties and more closed curler varieties, which yours seems to be. I'm so happy I finally purchased her.. I have the xerographica too and they are both so gorgeous.. It's important not to soak these guys too much because there bulb can rot.. It's a bit hollow from what I hear so water traps inside there and it gets overwatered if it's soaked too long and doesn't dry out quick enough.. Sprayings are mostly recommended.. but a good dunk, about every 2 weeks, for about 5 or 10 minutes is what I usually do.. with rain water.. Thanks for sharing such great info.. It's always such a pleasure to see you💕

I got my Tillandsia for free off of a neighborhood tree. 3 of them, all 3 different sizes and one is about to flower. Total awesome sauce!

I live in dry climate. And it was struggling until I moved it to bathroom. Indirect light ( quite hot and bright) and steam after shower are helping it to grow very well. I'm hoping it to bloom soon.

I love air plants and want to get some, but have heard they can be tricky with regard to watering. One day I just may have to purchase one and give it a try.
