Hi Sara, I'm so glad you enjoy these videos! The journals in this particular video were all bound the same way. The inside pages are folded and put in the cover then I ran the whole thing through my sewing machine a couple of times. I just use a straight stitch and usually I run it through twice, making 2 "seams" right next to each other in the crease of the pages. Super simple.
So many old videos are popping up in my list. I've never seen this one that I recall but I enjoyed it. I like your ideas about how much to keep or not keep. I am currently reorganizing my craft room and getting rid of stuff I have too much of. TFS
I guess you sorta have to be constantly purging especially when you're always getting new art stuff. Or else you'd be overrun with stuff. I know I am always trying to get rid of stuff especially if I've had it awhile and I have lost interest in using it. I decided not to do the big journal from Oklahoma (can't think of the name of it) so I just cut everything out of it that I had glued down, it just seemed a little overwhelming so I am going to do a Use it up or another junk journal.
"Magazines will take over your house if you keep them, worse than wire hangers". You crack me up. BTW we bring our dry cleaner wire hangers back to them & they reuse them. Have never been to Jerry's Artarama but just signed up for the email alerts / mailing list. Thanks.
YAY, I've finally caught up on all of your UA-cam videos! I am thrilled to have found you and thoroughly enjoy your creativeness. Thanks so much for sharing and I can't wait to see more. Best...Lujean
I am going through your older vids and I enjoyed this one a lot. One of my fav magazines to get is ELLE magazine, nearly every page is a beautiful model, jewelry, shoes, purses, etc. I get lots of mags at my library for free. They have a bin inside the doors that old mags go into, and people donate mags also, they also sell older books for .50 or 1.00. Hugs, Kathy
Great tutorial Shannon. I am going to watch the video you did on that book you showed. PS: I totally agree with magazine subscriptions. They would come to the house and sit... Then I would stress because they were not being read! Thanks again-b
Their prices are great and that's a rare thing to be able to say about an art supply store. Their Prismacolor pencils are $.99 each and Copic sketch markers are something like $5 each. I just love that about them :) Not to mention their nice glossy postcards!
I save that type of stuff too. =) I hope you will feel better soon. =) I also save things that I don't know WHY I'm keeping but just KNOW I will use them for something, one day. =) yes, I'm very sensitive to the perfume samples. I enjoyed this video. =) Thank you. =)
Gah - must go to that restaurant! I haven't seen any place with those postcard racks in a long time; the Kung Fu one was pretty cool. Great ideas about limiting stash of a certain type to one container; my crafty stuff is starting to take over my house. ;-)
My theory is that it's okay to be hoarder as long as you don't look like one so I disguise my hoarding by keeping it in neat bins. I'm sure there's something mental about that so I'm not going to think about it too hard :)
Shannon, I really like the junk journals you made. Do you have a tutorial on your channel that shows how to make the journal and how you stitched it and what kind of binding stitch? I would love to be able to do a journal like the ones you have. I do the pamplet journal and that is about it.
Thank you for the well-wishes, it will pass soon I'm sure! And, as usual, I really do appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos and leave a little comment now and then. It truly does make me feel appreciated!
I just realized I forgot to answer your other question about the address. Sometimes I cover it up, sometimes I don't. A little caution is always a good idea but anyone can find my home address in a phone book or by Googling, it's not a secret. And since I work from home people have to know my address. Sometimes my Mom or another friend will give me their junk mail and when they do I always make sure I cover their address by gluing something else over it...a sticker or a journaling tag etc.
Hi Shannon. First of all, I have to say that I really like your videos, you have such a cute accent and you are a very funny Lady, that makes me laugh.:) I am wondering if you put this junk mail in the junk journal, how do you cover your address? And how do you bing your journals, specifically how did you bind the journals that you are showing at the beginning of the video. Love, Sara
Are you typing on your phone? All of my 'ofs' come out as 'ifs' on my phone! YT won't let me post a link here but I'll tell you where to go to see what I use for my individual letters. Find the American & Science Surplus website. Once there, search for a product called Store-It-All. It's a black plastic box with yellow dividers and 26 compartments. I put a piece of cardboard in one of the 2 large compartments to hold all my alphabets then I toss all my numbers in the remaining large compartment.
"Worse than wire hangers, i swear to you". Oh that's for sure ;-) I am enjoying your videos so much! Can you sell these journals with the magazine images / and fonts from the catalog used if the pictures are altered?
I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks for watching! Can you sell artwork that contains altered copyrighted images? Yes. Is it copyright infringement? Yes. Will you be prosecuted? No. Whether or not the image is altered is irrelevant. If the image is recognizable, it is copyrighted therefore it is technically illegal to use it in your projects, whether you sell them or not. However, using copyrighted images (such as from a magazine) in your projects is very common especially in the areas of collage, mixed media, decoupage, etc. Since our projects are handmade in small numbers and are sold for low prices, we don't even register on the radar of mass produced magazine publishers. It's just not possible for a crafter to do any real damage to the copyright owner of those types of images. Therefore I use them blatantly and apologetically, knowing that it is technically wrong but it has zero negative effect on the copyright owner. Now, it's a completely different story when it comes to original artwork (not mass produced) or images that are copyrighted by independent artists. I won't touch those. Ever.
Great ideas but do you have any videos where you actually show us how to use this stuff b/c I throw 99% of that stuff away b/c I haven't seen anyone show me how to use it.

I definitely need to make some of these journals. Thanks for sharing some great ideas on what and how to use different types of junk mail!!

Aww man, you get much better junk mail than we do here in Australia! Lol 😄💚

Shannon I love your videos! Love this idea too!
I don't and several people have asked for one so I've put that on my list of 'videos to do'. I'll work on it!

I have a love/hate thing with magazines but our current arrangement seems to be working out well :)

Yes you can, yes you can!!!
you can always use the plastic credit cards to apply paint like a palette knife
That's something I do often, you'll see it in some of my painted paper videos.
(hand raised) sensitive to perfume here. instant headache. even with mild scents.
LittleWillie1000 I'm picturing you at the mall, running through Macy's cosmetic department wearing a gas mask. ;)
The only way I can visit it. Can't walk down the detergent isle in the grocery store either.
hey shannon. i do the same thing about collecting junk mail.. i have a bunch
THanks for watching!
Thanks for watching, Lujean!

Yay!!
Darn I'm over saving. Lol☕️😹😂
I need to do a video for that don't I? Okay, I'll put that on my to-do list.
Have you used Citrasol on heavy magazine pages?
Yes, I have some videos about it here: ua-cam.com/play/PLEBktQ6jtRkl_CizCyWq2DIklX9whDmwe.html
Great ideas but do you have any videos where you actually show us how to use this stuff b/c I throw 99% of that stuff away b/c I haven't seen anyone show me how to use it.
JellicleKat Look through the videos on my channel. There are dozens and dozens of them showing how I've used junk mail, book pages and other ephemera.
I must be reading the wrong kinds of magazines! Gee, I hate to discriminate against the men like that. I will have to work on making amends :)
🙂
I use my cards to spread glue. You r probably already doing this 😊
I do!
I love junk journals, I love to ‘save’ stuff/junk. Don’t use the ‘H’ word.
Thanks for watching Karen!
