I have decided to leave out the photo settings in the video, but for those who are interested you can find them all on my website here: espenhelland.com/project/snow-bunting-photo-settings/
Glad to find your site. I saw my first snow buntings last year in the countryside of the upper peninsula of Michigan USA. They were hard to capture with the camera but were so magical to watch and listen to. Today I sketched a photo of yours with colored pencil.
I climbed Ben Macdui 2 days ago and was greeted by one singing on the trig point. There were a pair up there. Also seen a lone one on Lochnagar summit in March
Hi Espen, exactly what we got when we were up there with the Bird Watching Magazine team at the Hotel in Grantown on Spey a couple of years ago, like you we saw them as soon as we arrived at that car park!. I got out of the car and grabbed my camera as quickly as I could and walked along towards the visitor centre hoping they would come a bit closer. When I got to that set of steps up to the picnic area one of them proceeded to hop all the way down the parapet towards me! - closer and closer - I could hardly believe it!. I even had to wind my 400mm zoom lens in to keep it in the frame!. So very nice to see you getting the same treatment in the same place!. Cheers, Richard.
Personally I am obsessed about buntings. Seen 3 species of them so far out of 7 available in my country. All of them are rarities as Grasslands are being destroyed the most. So I clicked on this video right away. Some nice photos there Espen.
Absolutely delightful to watch, Espen. I bought a Peterson filed guide in October of 1990, which I still use today, and have always recorded bird sightings.. on the snow bunting page, I wrote "whole flock January 27'08". No, I wasn't into bird photography back then, but sill have a nice memory of that day. Thanks for all your vids!
Thank you Jann :) I like having reminder memories like that. I drove away from a birding spot once and left my very well used Collins bird book on the roof of the car 🙄Use an app now which is handy for always having it with me, but not quite the same.
Beautiful images Espen!. We had a snow bunting down in the Costa del Sol last winter for a good two weeks. Shocking to see it along with house sparrows in the Marina with a splendorous sun.
Espen Helland loads buddy, some nice remote bungalows around there I’m looking an hour and a half ish circle around from inverness airport working out whether to keep and rent out my place or to just sell up and go 🤔
Great vlog Espen, really captures the atmosphere of the day and your enthusiasm. My photography has reached the point where I can pretty reliably capture acceptable portraits of birds, I came back from a trip yesterday, processed the pictures, sat back and realised that if I was to keep my enthusiasm I needed to think about the image as a whole, perhaps getting it to tell a story and / or looking good to a non birder. .... and then I saw this! High key, birds small in the frame, birds flying against the wind, just what I needed for further inspiration, thank you. My only ‘criticism’ would be that I’d love you to hold the stills for a bit longer so that I could really appreciate them. Very few vloggers do that, is there a reason? Looking forward to the hares.
Thank you very much Roger, that's great to hear that it was inspiring :) Hard to estimate how long is too long to leave images up, I might try for a bit longer, thanks :)

Very nice Richard! Great experience :) I never knew how much goes on at the Hotel in Grantown, must be at least 2 wildlife talks a week!
Hi Espen glad yo enjoyed your day and that you got some images of the snow buntings that you wanted so much. Until next time take care my friend.
Thank you very much Clive :)

Some nice photos there Espen.
They are cool! The buntings are definitely a bit more interesting than most of the warblers we get in the UK :)

Thank you David :)
Makes me cold watching....lol
You really got some spectacular shots, Epson! I have the same Thermos Morton Hilmer has, btw. LOL.
Thanks Larry :)
Another great video Espen. We regularly get Snow Buntings around Ottawa, Ontario every winter.
Thank you Stephen :) You guys must get some great stuff there!
Beautiful images Espen!. We had a snow bunting down in the Costa del Sol last winter for a good two weeks. Shocking to see it along with house sparrows in the Marina with a splendorous sun.
Thank you Marcos! I bet! Always something interesting showing up down your way :)
Amazing video Espen. Loved watching it and you made some fantastic shots. Brilliant!
Thank you very much :)
Great video Espen!
Excellent photos, it worked out great with the over exposed background!
Thanks Andy :) Yes, that's probably my favourite of the day.
Some of the best photos 50 yards from the car? You can see why in those conditions, well done just for getting up there, lovely shots
Thank you very much :) It was nice to get up there, it was pouring down rain at the bottom of the hill!
brilliant work
Thank you :)
Just looking at houses there lol 😂.... superb vlog and pictures buddy . Buntings are such fab birds👌🤙😉
Thanks man! Find anything?

Oh! Now I feel silly, just discovered your website, images I can take in and your post about ‘quantity v quality’ is just what I needed, ‘doh!’
Thank you very much Roger, that's great to hear that it was inspiring :) Hard to estimate how long is too long to leave images up, I might try for a bit longer, thanks :)
Beautiful shots. I need to get up to the Cairngorms, it's not far for me but I'm a new driver so don't fancy the conditions you had!
Thank you! May is a good time to go, the breeding season has started, easier drive and not too bad for midges!
Great moment ! Why not use a Hokki hide set up ? Thanks
.hanks Vincent! I guess it could have kept me out of the elements, but no need to hide with these birds.
great picture that you won't freeze what ?
Nice video Espen♥
Thank you :)
was cafe shut.
It was open, but had lunch with me :)
Lol I was about to ask that lol
Gutted, didnt know these little birds were here. I was there last weekend and had my camera 😡
