Beepberry! Tiny Pi-based Blackberry cyberdeck

- Опубліковано 13 чер 2023
- The Beepberry is a tiny portable Blackberry-esque cyberdeck powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero W (I'm using a Zero 2 W in mine).
I bought this back when it was announced, but right now it's sold out; sign up to be notified when it's back at shop.sqfmi.com/products/beepb...

They had the perfect opportunity to call it a Blackberry Pi
They mightve gotten in trouble for that, but it would've been such a good name...
"They", huh?
@@Marc42 Yeah?
Just make it raspberry π
@@Epsicronicsconsidering they've already renamed to Beepy, I'd say that's the case
Careful with this device.. Neither lsusb, nor lspci, nor dmsg recognize the rubber band and there are no drivers available for it. Caveat Emptor :D.
The rubber band is the driver. You'll find that out if you stretch it too far! 😅
A stretched rubber band has a service life. The variables that affect the service life is ambient temperature, humidity and average oxygen levels in the air. Other adverse external factors include: salts, oils and acids from sweaty hands.
If I were to take a risk-averse approach I would take out insurance on the rubber band, or I would print out a case from ABS plastic.
Damn proprietary lock-in with these rubber bands, this is why we need open-source firmware
😂
We need the rubber drivers, waiting for Elon musk to release them
I don't understand ANY of this as much as a frog understands quantum physics, but it sure looks cool
My esteemed colleague Professor Ribbit of Oxford Lakes University is offended by your flippancy Sir
Very tiny Linux computer.
You HAVE to use the rubber band. It`s DRMed and its the only battery holder that it will reckonize.
Lmao a serial number locked rubber band 😂
@@DellSnoozeApple would clearly do it
@@nocontext211they absolutely would haha

@@Nefariously_ignorant do you also speak 3 languages and sometimes mess up? Thought so.
its exceptional seeing people reuse old device components for fun tinker projects like this, those blackberry keyboards were too nice to end up in a dump.
Not reusing old equipment is just lack of imagination.
Some of these may be surplus replacement parts as well, which depending on the model of BlackBerry they're supposed to go into, may actually outnumber the # of working models.
This is all new parts, it's like expensive cool DIY hacker gadget fashion accessory, for those that want to work in "tech" but don't know a gpio from their armpit
@@Username-qx9gkHonestly I think you're right
@@deepsleep7822 But maybe they have some space part left, it is saving trash
Please make a long video about this. Thank you!
Agreed.
There’s a few on here.
My God I miss that keyboard with a passion. That phone was the first phone I had that could multitask like a champion
If really wish more phone manufacturers would make phones that have physical keyboards again. I miss this kind of stuff. Way easier to type on than a touchscreen.
there is a lot of that. you just have to search up
@@user-fx8cz9dh7tCan you recommend any examples?
If you mean touch screen smartphone with keyboard, yes please. I've seen maybe a handful of brand new phones that are like that.
Well, Nokia had done that recently. It sold for the first month, and people stopped buying
Android swiping keyboard and the new iOS swiping keyboard are often preferable for me and for simple sentences I often type faster with swiping than I do on a mechanical keyboard even.
This is the exact thing I have wanted literally for years.
So it will be interesting to see how well it Actually works while I hope and wait that they sell these again.
😭 ikr, i really needed this exact thing
i keep checking out their website hoping for new stock😢
What exactly can you do with this?
@@Yiffboy what can't you do with it? It's a linux box in hand.....,
All the things, including batterykit is together so don't need to worry about finding a monitor and a keyboard when a damn pi disconncets from network so you don't have to shut it down, a local nas when you are going someware and don't wanted keeps thing running in home to access servives running in server.... there are a lot
@@Yiffboy Run Taskwarrior (a program that helps sort, schedule, and track human tasks) in your pocket. That's what I'd do with it anyway.
(The Android Taskwarrior package doesn't work very well. I have no idea if anybody ever got it working with iOS.)
Everything with a blackberry keyboard is an awesome product already
Ive been holding on to my key 1 for years. I use it to this day. This is the happiest moment of my doom scrolling. I cannot wait to get this bought, put together and programmed.
What would you use this for?- practical or fidget or… just wondering.
@@phantiesim wondering too, any use ?
Imagine using this as your daily driver. 😄
Instant conversation piece.
omg I really miss Blackberry! The Q20 Classic keyboard was so cool. I find it easier than on a touch screen in some ways, and the way you can use the keyboard itself as a mousepad was dope. I picked one off eBay a couple years ago, sadly for only $30.
I now have a use for my old blackberry 😮
This clip made me chuckle hard.
Engineers never size to amaze and motivate me
Those tangible keys were so nice before touchscreens.
I miss my HTC Dream 😢
And partnered with them. Imagine typing something but not losing half your screen to the "keyboard" or being able to type quickly and accurately in a moving vehicle. As someone with some hand mobility issues, my Blackberrys have been my best communication tool for nearly 20 years. I still have a KEY² I use for a lot of writing.
Nice! Blackberry keyboard was awesome
Keep up the great work Jeff! Don't forget to keep your health steady too! ❤
Never unpeel that sticker til it's damaged!
Yeah, if it's not obstructing the view, or touch sensitivity(if that's what you're messin' with), there's no reason to expose that screen. I've forgotten these were on a few devices I've had, and was pleasantly surprised with a fresh screen right when I was thinking about buying new equipment (oscilloscope=$$$$, guitar tuner=🤏$😅).🍀
Sometimes, the screen protectors are of high quality and well worth keeping on the screen, unless they eventually start separating on their own.
Да : о их отрывают зачем та .. держутся нармально .. 🪔😭
I wanted one of these! They’re so rad! But sold out, guess many others thought similarly!
Yeah, I hope after the first batch finishes shipping in August or September, they'll order up a larger second batch! I'm also hoping they make a really nice case for it, the 3D printed one is functional, but not perfect.
@@JeffGeerling Here's to hoping! And did not expect a reply, it was a passing thought, but truly thank you for all your insight and content. I admire all your work!
Also congratulations on 500K subscribers!
@@C_PRTCL Thank you!
Damn I miss BlackBerrys!
Why?
@@CBrasil1966 I'm holding my old curve from like 2011.. It still turns on and holds a charge. The OS is butterysmooth and as a 27 year old who hasn't touched a video game on their phone in like 3 years, I'd pay to get this Curve working at 4-5g speeds. You have to hold one to understand the genius behind blackberrys engineers and their security is and was on another level. Apple still has nothing on them.
@@CBrasil1966 i had one recently, china one. it was cool to type on a keyboard. the feedback is fun
@@CBrasil1966 Blackberrirys were THE best phones to have for a long time if you were a Professional. It was way ahead of everyone else and highly respected and expensive. When Android phones came out they were quickly adopted but like PC's running Linux or Windows...you had endless vendors coming out with mobile phones sporting Android OS. Price points and features beat out all the other phones.
@@waverazorWhat do you mean "China one"? Do you mean a Unihertz Titan, Titan Pocket, or Titan Slim?
OMG....I have a Pi Zero W just sitting around waiting for something like this! I am So sold. THANK YOU for making this video!

I hope this turns out better than the Pocket CHIP I have which is gathering dust because it is now impossible to update (the screen driver repository seems to be gone).
So far it seems the devs behind this board are invested in it pretty deeply (everything on it works and is at least minimally documented).
@@JeffGeerling The big problem with the Pocket CHIP has been that the company that bought The Next Thing Company when they went bankrupt immediately removed its Github repositories (GPL requirements be damned). It doesn't matter what the Devs intentions are if they can't stay out of bankruptcy.
@@DrewNorthup Is it possible to find forks? Or did they DMCA and nuke the entire thing?
@@Jeff-ss6qt There were at one point a couple of purported forks, but I didn't have a chance to investigate / clone at the time. I'd have to make another archeological expedition to find out.
I seriously hate UA-cam's comment filtering sometimes.
I didn't think there'd be a project that would combine a Raspberry Pi Zero with a Playdate display and BlackBerry Classic keyboard. I'm impressed.
That’s what I was thinking it was a play date display
FINALLY someone made something like this, I think I have to buy this to remake the blackberry UI ❤
You’r voice make my anexiety go away, im subscribing! (:
My brain went on Aeroplane mode watching this video..
Heheheheheh looking forward for the full video already ❤
Damn the loop was really smooth
I love tiny tech like this so much
I think blackberry trackpad is the best they could offer on their device
Reminds me of the PocketCHIP but with a nicer screen that will be less usable and a better keyboard!
Waao that blackberry keyboard brings me back memories 🙏🏼😂😂😂
Oh i remember my old BlackBerrys, i loved them so much
Please make a full video.
Please make a long video showcasing how to do it. I'm a noob but very anxious about making something like this.
I've been thinking of something similar for at least 2 years. so glad they've made it !
Love these mini projects people come up with. 😎👍
I had my eye on this! I'm very tempted. A cool mod would be a little Gameboy style controller.
Yeah it would be epic as long as it costs less than a playdate
I say we riot in the streets till they bring back phones with real buttons.
Need hot thundery weather for that... ;-P
just get any of the Unihertz Titan series
Count me in bruh
I actually was looking for something exactly like this just the other day... Thanks Jeff!
Holyshit
amazing, thank you for showing this to me and changing my life jeff.
Do you make a full video on this?
Looks like a device I could like.
What I wouldn't give for a Pi Zero 2 right now. C'mon, Eben!
End of the year, he said... but I believe that when I see it 😔... similar to his 'we'll soon get the Pi 4's back in stock' back, what, about a year or so ago? Yeah, right...
The flipper can create rogue access points btw. Also this is good to buy if you have or want to learn soldering skills, you can get blank boards and some equipment and build your own modules for various things. If it’s good enough you can patent and sell it.
I need this thing ASAP, I never had a blackberry and always wanted one, all I had was an HP48G+
I like the part where you say what it does.
He sctually did my man, is a freaking screen, baterry and keyboard por a raspberry pi zero w
linux based computer.
This is perfect, though I'm not a fan of the screen, which seems inconvenient. Does anyone know where/how they sourced the blackberry keypad? I wouldn't even know how to go about that.
I believe it's based on the BB Q20: www.tindie.com/products/arturo182/bb-q20-keyboard-with-trackpad-usbi2cpmod/
@@JeffGeerling wait, you're saying those are not keyboards of NOS Blackberry manufacture? Somebody is building the design as a new stock part?
About 5 years ago I actually posted on a forum regarding making a blackberry into a Pi device. And here we are!
Hey it’s Jeff! You’re just all over the internet. Love running into your stuff.
Thats amazing! Can it make calls?
Not this version, except maybe if you hacked it with WiFi + Bluetooth. It doesn't have built-in cellular.
Yet another neat, but unobtainium, product.
🤓 beep berry guys, my new favorite cyber deck 🤓
I love this guys voice, the way he talks is very smooth
Ohh if I could put a 4 or 5g sim in it I’d be all over this
That's an obvious next step, but for this version, you'd have to dangle a USB a cellular modem off the top!
@@JeffGeerlingI need that version!
@@JeffGeerling dangle a dongle?
@@JeffGeerlingYou could hook the dongle into the battery band, I guess.
If they sell a case for it, I'd be mighty tempted!
Such a cute little thingy
The satisfaction of pressing those old-school buttons, takes me back.
This is gonna make me sound old AF but I really miss those blackberry keyboards
What would the usecases for it be?
Playing around, fooling around, and screwing around. Not necessarily in that order.
learning?
I need this in my life!
This is so cool!
Wow! How cute it is! :)
I'm so inlove with these phone up until now..
Thanks for the share, this is dope
Now you just need to turn it into a cell phone. Seriously, I know a few Blackberry fans who would love that!
Beautiful
You make it look easy.
"What kind of hardware are you using?"
"Rubber band."
Never thought this would show up on my feed. Seeing beeper delve into something so cool is nice (not that matrix bridging multiple services onto one app isnt cool enough)
Calebs hollister comment had me rolling!
That’s really amazing!
blackberry keyboards are awesome. someone should make a device like this that replaces the q10 main board cause those q10 were awesome size wise.
The q10 was the perfect smartphone.
I’m liking these little devices . I might try making
I haven't been this excited about a pi accessory since the pigrrl!
Love it! 🎉❤
Oh I want one, that's awesome
Ooh nice, looking forward to the full vid!
I still love the WIDE screen of blackberry 🧡
You made me want it, and I was very disappointed to see it was sold out. Something handheld with a decent keyboard and GPIO support is exactly what I need for your everyday tight-space electronics stuff you encounter on the daily when doing home automation.
If that had a decent screen, I'd buy one right away.
when you watched a blackberry movie yesterday 😂😂😂
Incredible ❤
That's soooooo cool!
It’d be so cool to have something like this as a dedicated Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup device 😮
That’s Awesome 🤩
Wow that's honestly really neat and I think with some tiny mods to the pi 0 for more interfaces you could turn it into a basically all in 1 handy dandy pocket it device.
This is my love for this summer 🤩😍🥰😍🤩
⸸
Super! Awesome!
This concept in a laptop form factor would be perfect for me
something I'm actually going to buy omg i love it
I love products like this, reusing old ewaste that gives it an extended life.
Unfortunately it’s not reusing old parts. It’s a brand new keyboard designed to _look_ like a Blackberry keyboard. Completely new design from Solder Party.
This is really cool
Very nice
Yeahhhhhhhh. My pal would love a BlackBerry again.
That's so cool!
I have an iPhone. I bought it from a shop. It works without me having to do any of the stuff you did. Good day
“Can I ping it?”
“Yes you can!”
i have an old blackberry, i would love to learn how to build something like this from scratch
