I have used diatomaceous earth in areas they breed; so like in their manure or low areas or anytime you have say a lot of rain the diatomaceous earth will be really really good on any of their bedding to kill fleas and ticks for any animal; it's not just horses. Y 4:34 ou can get pretty big amounts for cheap online it has to be food grade diatomaceous earth not the swimming pool stuff!
Try adding dragonfly decoy clip-ons to the halter. You can try and weave the stem through the unused buckle holes or punch in extra holes in a good spots.
At the barn I board at we use apple cider vinegar, citronella, skin so soft and a little commercial concentrate fly spray. I also make an all natural swat formula that works awesome and smells great.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I am hoping it will work without the citronella oil as I have one horse that is allergic to it and another thing to note is that I’ve had a couple of vets tell me do not spray Falls or any parts of their mother with an oil based spray, it can cause the falls to sunburn, no matter what color they are, and also be careful with using it on more light skinned horses for the same reason other than that this sounds like a really great spray and I can always leave the citronella oil out and as I only have one full, I guess I can just buy some different
Neem oil is the best carrier oil for pest repellent as it repels on its own too. Geranium oil, citronella, clove seems to be best for me in East Tennessee. I add old brown type listerine to mine too. I feed a mix of ACV, water and garlic cloves over hay pellets daily too. 1/2-1 cup depending on amount of feed. I use a gallon jug. I have minimum of 15 horses here. The ACV and garlic don't keep every pest away, but sure cuts down on biting. Fly masks and shoo fly boots really help. You can also try Avon skin so soft original oil on fleece part of fly masks in poll area. For riding, you can use sss on fleece and wrap browband and crown of headstall helps some. Gain dryer sheets help some too on bridle.
I've tried so many essential oils/homemade sprays. Seems like they only worked for 10-15 minutes. Could you tell me....with your combination....how long did the Flies actually stay off of Chance once you sprayed him? (Thank you)
She’s using some oils that could irritate the eyes (like citronella and peppermint) so do NOT use near the FACE since it could mix with their sweat and burn the eyes. BUT the oil she’s using thats most concerning is the CLOVE oil because that can actually cause BLINDNESS !

Thank you for this! I'm determined to prove one of the coaches at the barn wrong, and show her you don't have to buy fly spray. 😂
It does work! (Especially a fresh batch) Good luck with your coach 👍

Try eucalyptus instead! Adding baby oil will help it last too
We are also in NC 30 miles from the coast. The flies are horrible. We have tried so many different things, hoping this helps our herd!
I hope so! Mixing with palm or baby oil will make it last longer
Thank you!!!

I've had it work for about an hour when it's freshly made, as long as any other store spray I've tried
What size is your spray container ? i.e., a smaller or larger container would make the solution stronger or weaker.
32 oz I think? Regular fly spray container size??
Does it work for people??
😄 haven't tried!
How many ounces of water are you adding to oils to?
About 30 oz or so, most of a regular fly spray bottle

Who's spraying flyspray at the face??
What size bottle?
32 oz
I used it and it lasted 10 minutes
Try adding baby oil to extend. The longest I've had it or any other spray last was 1hr
