  • A 356 tonne generator is transported by heavy hauliers along a major trunk road in Suffolk, escorted by police and highways maintenance teams. Traffic is disrupted as a result.
Allelys transported the Siemens Energy generator, weighing 356 tonnes and at 81 metres in length, from the Port of Ipswich to the Eye Synchronous Condenser Plant (read more: conradenergy.c...) in Yaxley, Suffolk on Sunday, 18th August.
Suffolk & Norfolk Police Roads & Armed Policing Team (RAPT) escorted the abnormal load from Ipswich to Yaxley. Several police cars and motorcycles closed the A14 eastbound side to allow the wide load to pass on the opposite side of the road, using lights and sirens to warn traffic. A Tesla police vehicle led the escort.
Suffolk County Council, road maintenance teams, and utility companies assisted with the movement of the oversized load. Street furniture had to be moved, a temporary bridge was built and roads closed. Traffic was disrupted as a result.
More videos of key moments will be shared soon.

Allelys transported the Siemens Energy generator, weighing 356 tonnes, from the Port of Ipswich to the Eye Synchronous Condenser Plant (read more: conradenergy.co.uk/energy-generation/grid-stability/yaxley-synchronous-condenser/ ) in Yaxley, Suffolk
The heavy load took an unusual route to avoid as many bridges as possible, to reduce the risk of damage. This is with the exception of one point on the route where a temporary over-bridge had to be built, as seen in this video: ua-cam.com/video/UYk5N92YJxM/v-deo.html
It also had to avoid an awkward junction that meant it couldn't go down the 'correct' side of the A14.

There is a maximum axle weight of 16.5t on UK roads that all vehicles have to abide by hence mobile cranes with 5 or 6 axles. This is to spread the load and not damage the road surface, this probably has less ground pressure than a normal lorry.

Nice! A synchronous condenser is basically an electrical flywheel, needed because we connect Renewable Energy (which doesn't have much rotating mass to stabilise mains AC) like wind and solar direct to loads. Most of our Variable RE should be dumped into storing e-NG (renewable natural gas) and then we can mostly rely on gas power stations (which would be NetZero because e-NG is) for grid stability, fixing intermittency (sun not shining, wind not blowing) at the same time. We need these while we're still 'doing VRE wrong'!

Who got stuck in traffic on the A14? with the person trying to jump off the Orwell bridge or something (idk if it was a person trying to jump off. I just heard that) I was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half, 4 ambulances drove past , 2 police and a fire truck AND what made it even worse was we were stuck on the onramp for the A14 so it was one lane so it was REALLY tight AND the was a lorry so it was even tighter

From a Canadian perspective it looks like they have sent regular traffic down the wrong way so the load would be on its own on the right side of the road. Really thrilled to see the Lancaster. As a young child they flew over my home along with Mustangs, Spitfires, Hurricanes and Harvard trainers almost every day. I even remember the individual sounds of the engines. The convoy went on the wrong side of the A14 for two reasons - 1) the bridge over the A14 at the Whitehouse Interchange would not withstand the weight of the generator. 2) It would not have been possible for this behemoth to negotiate the roundabout at the bottom of the A140 turning right, but would be relatively easy to turn right onto the A140 from the wrong side of the A14. The disruption is necessary if we want to enjoy an electricity supply 😊

Found the Karen. This operation would have been months, if not years in planning. There would have been plenty of notice to drivers months in advance about the road closure.
But no, there has to people who are entitled and find something to complain about because their Starbucks run has been disrupted.

And not a single person in the whole arrangement of this had the smarts to move it in the early hours of the morning when it wouldn't inconvenience shedloads of paying road users....No? smh.

You are not allowed to move that at night.
Believe it or not when doing jobs like this you need to be able to see what you are doing.
There have been several of these type of movements through Ipswich port recently and they actually go very smoothly, Suffolk police have been very good at keeping traffic moving (there are traffic management companies with temporary lights at some junctions) once the police get there and take over the bikers direct traffic and keep it moving until the very last minute and realise it as soon as possible. The journey takes time but is effectively done in lots of short sections so no is inconvenienced for long.
