A few things :)
GeistBLAST...not Blade. What's wrong with me?!?!
With Pack Guardian, I meant that the card itself doesn’t take advantage of madness, but
it doesn’t matter. Card is bonkers.
Erdwall Illuminator is really underrated, imo. I'm running 2 so far in My clue deck and want a playset. With only 2 on the field and Tamiyo's Journal, you can search your deck for any card FOR FREE EVERY TURN. And the value of 2 cost for 1/3 flying is great.
+TheManaSource Stitchwing Skaab won me my prerelease just from Madness enabling and coming back constantly.
I don't remember the card name but the 1/1 for one red with haste werewolf that flips into a 2/2 with menece is so good. it will usually get 5 damage in before it's dealt with. also wedge you forgot skin invasion. the 1 mana enchantment that makes the creature attack each turn and when the enchanted creature dies you get a 3/4 insect horror
+TheManaSource Nahiri's Machinations is ***king bonkers in draft. Make your squishiest guy indestructible and swing in care free. Wanna swing in more than one guy? That crazy second ability means that at worst, trades are almost always in your favor, if you cant just out right kill their creature before combat damage...
I'll tell you a fantastic common in Blue, Wedge: Ghostly Wings. Cracked three of them in Prerelease, and that literally made my UG Deck somewhat viable. It makes ANY Green fatty a bomb, protects it, and it even killed some Devil tokens while denying the death trigger. It's a hell of a gem.
All your notes again on all the spoilers got me 1st place again! thank you guys as always ! keep teaching us:)
+Alexander Payne !!!!!! :D
Nice
Ember Eye Wolf put in work at prerelease. Skin Invasion is definitely worth a mention as well. Rancid Rats also swung for quite a bit of damage early game and were extremely useful blockers. The only other card not mentioned that really put in work was Call the Bloodline which is amazing for the madness and delirium triggering.
Call the Bloodline was crazy strong with the Sanitarium Skeleton and Indulgent Aristocrat when I saw them in use together.
bound by moonsilver definitely put in work for me in the pre-release. Being able to move it later is pivotal. You don't feel all self-conscious casting it early on to disable a mildly annoying creature out of fear of something bigger coming later.
"Poops out clues like tic tacs" 😂😂
My girlfriend actually created a pretty busted clue/soldier/life gain cycle with the tireless tracker intro pack. The best part is: she's only been playing Magic for a couple months.
The coolest thing about Hermit of the Natterknolls (8:47) is that his wolf version also has a mighty beard!
aww no Univited Geist he's so good
(also putting invocation of Saint traft on the flipped side is hilarious)
+Ben Blitz I know, the Geist is sooo good
+Ben Blitz Uninvited Geist is GREAT. There really were just too many good blue uncommons I'm telling ya haha
+Ben Blitz
Uninvited Geist basically won me my games at Prerelease.
YOU BIG LIKE WHALE!
Dude, this video was insanely helpful. Thanks for much for this great analysis, Wedge. loved it.
Hey you know what would be great? If ever you made a text-version of your recommendations as well, just so I can have something to jog my memory before drafting. It's hard to remember everything :)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I'm drafting FNM Friday and was looking for a video. Great work, keep it up!
At the pre-release I bounced between two decks; a blue-white and a green-black. Those werewolves... The Pacifist and the Hunter were among the cards I pulled at the and they won me games in brutal fashion. I also can't complain about Just The Wind. I'd agree it's not a first pick, but I combined it with Stern Constable and completely locked people down. In a weird turn of events, also ended up with a single Snapper (the 6/6 blue turtle) a drew it every game I played the blue-white... It was odd. Not bad though, tapping one creature to discard and remove another meant that thing got to smash my opponents to death whenever he ended up on the battlefield.
Should've mentioned how amazing Purge is AMAZING to enable Delirium and how great it synergizes with White's tons of clue generators.
A really fun first pick would also be Liliana's Indignation and then SOLELY draft creatures and nothing else. It's absolutely ridiculous that way as a finisher.
I'm also really surprised that you didn't even mention Lambholt Pacifist as one of the green bombs. A 3/3 blocker for 2 is great already and a good stat line at any point. Combo it with any big creature or just buff the card itself to 4 power and its downside is gone.
+Zakading I think the Pacifist is a great card, I do, the problem is that I don't think it stands on its own two feet as well as any of the other uncommons I mentioned. Again, we're talking about the least useful of AMAZING cards so...still good, but I had to stop naming uncommons somewhere haha

+skeven0 and im actually bored drafting this set, doing it way to much (about 20 drafts so far)
You looked a little stoned today. The info you provide is always appreciated. keep em coming
Topplegeist seems super funny. Besides from that, Ulrich's Kindred, Skin Invasion/Shredder, Pyre Hound and Ember-Eye Wolf all look awesome, going deep red this Friday, LET THE BLOOD FLOW!
Hands down no question best green uncommon Ulvenwald Mysteries, 2G Enchantment, Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, investigate, and then Whenever you sacrifice a Clue, put a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token onto the battlefield. This card will give you so much control it's unreal
It's not a common or uncommon, but the new Odric is a super atomic-bomb in dradf/sealed. It was insane in prerelease!
Actually brewing a Commander deck around Captain Keyword and then flying indestructible doublestrike trample infect Blightsteel Colossus with lifelink is on its way to crush tables! :D
vessel of volatility and embed eye wolf are awesome commons in my opinion. Also a neglected heirloom would be a great first pick if you happened to get it
If you are in the red madness deck, then Insolent Neonate is such a bomb. It's a turn 1 drop that allows you to madness easily at any time, plus you get to draw a card with it. It was a power house in my sealed deck. Went 3-1 at pre-release.
being new to magic this was extremely helpful to help me build a good deck thanks
You missed Morkrut Necropod! Every time I drew it, I casted it, and every time I casted it, I won! Even when coming from far behind! It's bad for constructed, but most of the popular removal in the format couldn't deal with him, and the one time it got removed, I brought it back with macabre waltz (another totally first pickable card if you've already decided to go for madness creatures!)
Just from my prerelease experience, I can see myself first picking Tenacity, Moorland Drifters (Flying bears are an insane clock) and I probabley wouldn't be upset first picking a Gone Missing. My prerelease experience was Esper Delirium but these cards all put in serious work, Came 3rd overall thanks to going wide and having all the removal, plus some bonkers rares.
I'm a huge fan of Autumnal Gloom. 3 mana 4/4 with Hexproof and Trample is bonkers. It's SO easy to get that delirium enabled - I played it in a RG deck at prerelease and had no trouble at all. If I can go black with it, even better.
Didn't get to see Skin Invasion perform at the pre-release, but I imagine it's pretty good, albeit playing with fire (as red tends to do anyway). You could drop that on one of their early-game dorks, forcing it to ram its face into one of your guys, thus netting a 3/4. Or you could try putting it on something of yours with a sac mechanic, and likely have the ability to sac it right away.
Like I said, playing with fire.
Still seems like a fun card to play.
Pulled a playset of angelic purge in pre-release, gotta say it definitely won me some games
I'd firstpick a silverstrike. It's white removal that gains me life and was a beast at the prerelease.
I'm surprised Lambholt Pacifist didn't make the list.... it's sooo goood
Missed the prerelease, but I'm drafting Friday. So hyped, thx for the video
What about Stensia Masquerade? Giving all your creatures first strike is great and added bonus if you have vampires.
+Michael Batuigas The Masquerade is a fantastic card...in the right deck and it is situational on the board. Drawing it when you have an empty board? no bueno. Good card, but I don't think its where I want to be with my first pick. I could be wrong though.
Critique this deck for standard. x4 pieces of the puzzles, x4 wild-field scarecrow, x4 rise from the tides, x3 explosive vegetation, x1 behold the beyond, x4 languish , x4 Grasp of darkness, x2 painful truth, x2 Sphinx of the final word, x2 murderous compulsion, x2 Ruinous path, x1 pulse of murasa, x2 Nissa Pilgrimage, x2 risen executioner. Total non land card cost is $38. Now 24 lands, x3 evolving wilds, x4 yavimaya coast, x4 llanowar wastes, x5 forest, x4 submerge boneyard x2 islands, x2 swamp. Total land cost $12. Total deck cost $50. This doesn't include side board. This deck is a land ramp deck revolving around RISE FROM THE TIDES and RISEN EXECUTIONER. 1ST CREATED BY ME :p
Both the devil token producing spells proved to be a powerhouse in all 3 of my prereleases.
Stensia Masquerade was pretty gross. I took 2nd at my pre release and it was largely due to this card. All your creatures having first strike when they're attacking was back breaking. Growing the vampires that hit was nasty too.
that spider is soo good is like a constant fog, specially with the skinner
I totally agree about Harness the Storm. I got 2 of them in pre release and didn't do too well.
Shamble back is also a really powerful uncommon being that you can exile from any graveyard for 1, and then it spits out a 2/2 like its no joke. First pickable? Maybe, but it is effectively a 1 manna 2/2. Not bad
Morkrut Necropod is a actually a really good black uncommon, a 7/7 with menace for 6 mana, even if you have to sac a land or creature to attack or block. Definitely makes your opponent think twice before doing anything if they have no way to remove it.
Farborg Revenant did very very well for me at pre-release. It's basically extorting every turn.
Sacking clue tokens to Angelic Purge is just so easy in this set. Easily makes it more valuable than it looks.
Pack Guardian: "Wolf, attend me!"
Wolf: "Woof."
3:10 Insanity? I think you mean madness!
Forgot the rarity but prolly a rare when i think about it: skin invation is king. Play it sd protection to get a creature through or force their stuff into your blocker
Harness the Storm was my prerelease promo. Didn't play it as I could only use my two copies of clipped wings, yeah wasn't happening. Drafting around it might work better but I agree, if opened go to the uncommon
Haha most unexpecting combo that won every game it came out for me during the pre-release was Neglected Heirloom strapped onto any green werewolf, a 6/6 first strike on turn 4 is pretty mad XD.
thank you wedge for this! can u make a draft shadows video on the rares to avoid?
Not a first pick, but if you are playing blue you need to grab an "Essence Flux". It's like a Cloudshift for blue with spirit upside.
Omg that mad prophet is so good. I was draw lands. Discard land to accelerate my draws. So good help me win games in prerelease
Call of the Bloodline was STUPID good at the pre-release. In every case where i drew the card and wasn't pretty much dead on board, it just won the long game. Draw a late game land? nope, it was a linklink vampire all along. Have equipment for them? just win.
Wedge I think in videos like this, draft guides, you should also mention rares that AREN'T first pickable.
where is uninvited geist!
in the delirium deck Topplegeist is crazy. so much value for 1 mana.
I drafted U/W spirits the other day, and while I didn't fair terribly well, all my losses were very close games. In any case, Nearheath Chaplain was the CLEAR MVP.
Ember-Eye Wolf. 2 mana for a 1/2 common with haste hurt me quite a bit last weekend. Especially late game where it was buffed up to hell.
I couldn't go to pre-release so I prevordered a fatpack, I pulled a foil and non foil descend upon the sinful, I also pulled 2 declaration in stone
Grotesque mutation, super good common black, it won me games as a combat trick and getting me like 8 more life :3
morkrut necropod, the black 7/7 menace slug won more games than i expected at our prerelease! The sacrifice downside can easily be used as a delirium-triggering-upside and menace makes this thing annoying as hell
I wonder why Skin Invasion didn't even make it to the honorable mentions. I know that on first glance there seems to be nothing to recommend this card (you spend mana without getting anything right away). But I got to play this card in two drafts so far, both times in pretty much mono red decks, and it plays just great. It's a bit of removal, a bit of a cheap strong creature, even a bit of skulk. Hidden treasure.
Harness was my pre release promo :( but then I pulled avacyn and I was happy again :)
pack gaurdian saved me twice at the pre release by putting a 4/3 and 2/2 on the board at flash speed definite pick if anywhere near green.
You got Pack Guardian wrong. You cannot enable madness with it since you HAVE to discard a land according to the card text. Sorry if this was already pointed out.
Yeah....Ran into someone who had double Accursed Witch at the prerelease. She saw one each in games 1 and 2, somehow I squeaked the win out in 2, but then she found both of them in game 3, sat back and watched me bleed to death.
The blue prowess flyer is pretty good though. Maybe even better than just the wind if you dont have any discard
+Anders Kjøllesdal Hansen It worked wonders for me tonight. I had two games where I dropped Invocation of Saint Traft on it, and just took the game in 2-3 turns
Expose is not a first pick but might be a good 3rd. At pre-release it got me a won and saved me sometimes.
Nahiri's machinations was just broken when I got it out in prerelease. The activated ability is blah, but giving any of your creatures indestructible is insane
I also had that enchantment with Odric. At one point we had a clogged board, I play Odric that gave all my creatures indestructible, flying, trample and vigilance. Soo dank
is it wrong that im in love with this guys voice?
Hey wedge! Great video, but don't you have to discard a land to Pack Guardian?
Pore over the Pages synergises so well with Wierding Woods. Just saying.
I would add Voldaren Duelist to the mid-pack red common picks. Has that annoying ability that prevents a block along with haste. As well as Dance with Devils; devil tokens are deceptive and irritating to deal with.
+Andrew Rogers Yeah the Duelist is great. Deserves to be there for sure.
Macabre Waltz ? Seems pretty good but I can understand it not being as good as the others, thoughts on the parasite aura card makes creature attack each turn and when it dies flips to creature seems decent
I found Trail of evidence and Investigate to be pretty great, IMO.
The mist. Amazing card. The end.
My prerelease pool had two Harness the Storms -- TWO -- and a friggn' Seasons Past. What a waste of half my rare slots, lol
Got a bunch of red and green werewolves at the prerelease and Arlinn Kord as promo on top. Totally won, broken card (atl. in limited :P).
I think you forgot Ulvenwald Mysteries, it won me some games at the prerelease
This video would have been nice a week ago when I was still placing pre-orders trying to predict what will have a price jump.
Could it be that u completely forgot about Ulvenwald Mysteries ?
Perfect video for my birthday lol
I was in a sealed Draft for Shadows over innistrad last sunday - Drafted a Black/White Human Deck with avacyn, the deck was amazing but sadly i got rolled over because i was mana screwed in 3 games :(
ok, went to my draft night, went 3-0-1 (won three, tied once) with a deck whos only win conditions were triskaidekaphobia, and sin prodder. I won 6 games with triskaidekaphobia, and the rest with sin prodder. My deck was so removal and card hate heavy, with the main subject being madness triggers, that i either ran out of time to win or just destroyed and won turn 5! seriously, watch out for the phobia man, it's deadly.
Are you planning on doing a draft guide on Eldritch Moon as well?
Think this Real Quick lightning axe + fiery temper, 8 damage for 2 red, my Work here is done.
+Ankille r Nice, but the axe only hits creatures, whereas the temper can target creature OR player.
Surprised not to see any mention of artifacts. Do you have any thoughts there?
what archetypes do you think are good? cheers mate.
Poop clues like tic tacs some of the best things I have heard all day
I got Avacyn,Arlin and Jace.
+Willem Lemmer I don't believe you.
+Andrewmeda Galaxy Really i do not care what you believe, what really matter is the fact that i got those cards in my booster box and fat pack. Beware of jealousy it could corrupt ones mind. I hope you have awesome pulls ass well. Greetings from SA.
Willem Lemmer I misunderstood you. I thought you meant you pulled them all during a draft. Between a box and a fat pack I can see where that could happen.
+Andrewmeda Galaxy A guy at my pre-release pulled Avacyn and Jace from the same pack. Never doubt the outrageously crazy luck some people have! xD
That red enchantment that gives all your attacking creatures first strike was a huge problem for me to deal with in prerelease, just saying.
No Nahiri's Machinations or Gryff's Boon? The machinations puts your opponent on the backfoot basically all game, and the boon is relevant literally all game. Have you ever wanted to give that swoll werewolf a pair of wings, without accidentally flipping it? Frick yeah, every goddamn day. I would've lost to the boon in several games had my opponents forgotten then could just replay it from their yard; it's definitely worth a spot on this list.
+N. Lesser You've clearly never played with the Machinations then. It's an absolute blowout, forcing your opponent trade unfavourably. I was running it in a bant color strategy, without ever activating the "do a damage" activation, and it literally carried me all game, every time I played it.
+N. Lesser However its relevance isn't deterred by your opponent just having a 3/3. At worst, it forces a stalemate, and you win the damage race if they decide to turn sideways; they swing, no blocks: you swing, can't block, 4 > 3. Similarly it holds relevance all game. Being able to play this on turn 2 means until upwards of turn 5 or 6, you can effectively replace "indestructible" with "unblockable" since so much of the set is made of 2/x creatures and your opponent doesn't want to trade unfavourably. Early damage is really strong for help you get ahead.
In the late game, when board states are built up, it can help break the aforementioned stalemates by making something you don't particularly want dead, say something with an enchantment, indestructible /until the end of your turn/ meaning it also beats instant speed burn trying to deal with your creatures.
And all of this is on top of the fact it has an extra clause on the card, which is equally as good.
I'm not saying it's the best white uncommon in the set, however I am saying it should get the recognition it wholly deserves. Don't discount how ridiculous indestructible actually is.
+natoraishido Remember wedge is going over the 1st pick type of uncommon or common in the pack, if your rare just absolutely is no good for draft. Nahiri's is not good enough for 1st pick choice is what being said. not that it isn't good just the fact that you don't want to 1st pick the card. just like Gryff's boon you don't want to 1st pick that.
When are you going to be doing deck techs for Shadows Over Innistrad?
At pre-release I had two Murderous Compulsions in hand and my opponent played Always Watching. Sadface.
I opened 2 harness the storm on last weekends prerelease... I died a little inside but managed to go 3 wins 3 losses with the deck I ended up with (No, I did not play any of the harness the storms)
So should I pick these cards to prevent others from picking them, or should I actually build a deck around them while drafting? Won't I end up with a multi colored deck? I'm not that good at drafting.
Just the wind is good for just . The worst blue uncommon i played with was the abent research
What do you think of using Artifact Creatures to go 2 deep in delirium on one card? I found these helped me hit delirium fast in prerelease.
Hi wedge, I'm just curious on why LeafyIsHere is a featured channel on your channel? I think that is awesome, I'm just curious on when all that started.
Yeah that chaplian wreched me in my last match
for hate drafting which is better to take, sinister concoction or kindly stranger?
moonsilvered an avacyn, my prerelease fistpump.
what colors would you preferably run?
can you do a zombie deck made from innistrad and shadows please. Huge tribal fan.
Why not Village Messenger? Turn 2 2/2 with menace is s powerful.
I don't get it: why is Murderous Compulsion's ability worth it? Its madness cost is the same as its normal mana cost.
Madness is instant speed and it allows for value when you're discarding
For limited .I have faith in you wedge, until you failed to mention on caged fury. Literally the best red card in the set
