The Mexican-American War in 5 Minutes

- Soon after Mexico's Independence from its colonizer, Spain, it went to war with the U.S. This war would lead to the loss of the modern day states of California, Arizona and New Mexico. While the Mexican-American War was hardly justifiable by the U.S., the fact remains, our country would be vastly different than it is today if the U.S. had never pursued its aggressive expansionist period in the 1800s.

It wasn’t that long ago that the United States went to war with its neighboring country, Mexico. Most wars in American history have not been popular amongst the American public and the Mexican-American war was no exception.
Years before war broke out between the two countries, Mexico had fought its own war of independence against the Spaniards. It was in 1812 that Mexico freed itself from its colonizers. At the time the new country spanned from current day northern Oregon to the modern country of Guatemala. Its northern territory was sparsely populated and because of this the government supported plans to welcome settlers from the United States in the hopes of further developing the region. It was through this program that the majority of the population in Texas became American - by the time of the Texas Revolution nearly 10,000 of the 14,000 people living in Texas were American settlers. The only condition that the Mexican government placed on its foreign population in Texas were that they pledge loyalty to Mexico, convert to Catholicism, and live on the land they purchased for at least 10 years - Mexico also didn’t allow slavery in its country. This proved hard for the American settlers to follow because they were mostly protestant, loyal to the U.S. and proslavery. It wasn’t long before Texas erupted in rebellion and fought a revolution of its own against the Mexican government.
After Texas won its independence from Mexico it tried to become part of the United States two times. However, the U.S. Congress rejected its application because many Congressmen didn’t want to antagonize the Mexican government. Additionally some Congressmen from the free north eastern states did not want to add another slave state to the country.
In 1844 President James K. Polk was elected president who was an avid supporter of Manifest Destiny, or the belief that God has meant for the United States to conquer the land from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. Polk’s eye was not just on Texas - but veered all the way to California.
When Polk became president, Congress voted to annex Texas into the United States. It was in 1845 when the president sent troops under the command of General Zachary Taylor into an area between the Nueces River - which was the traditional southern border of the Mexican state of Texas - and the Rio Grande - which marks the current border between Texas and Mexico. At the same time Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City to try and purchase California. Both of these acts angered the Mexican Government and because of this Slidell was sent back to the U.S.
Polk, who felt that the Mexican government mistreated Slidell, seized the opportunity and when he was told that on May 9, 1846, Mexican soldiers had fired upon American soldiers between Rio Grande and the Nueces River Polk declared that “We have tried every effort at reconciliation. The cup of forbearance had been exhausted even before the recent information from the frontier of the Del Norte. But now, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” With this Polk declared war on Mexico.
However, Mexicans thought of this act as one of banditry because of course, the shots that were fired upon American soldiers, were in Mexico’s eyes still in Mexico - south of the traditional Texas state border - the Nueces River. In fact a Mexican article written just days after war was announced in the paper El Tiempo declared that “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler.” There were even U.S. Congressmen that declared the war an act unjustifiable. Senator Charles Sumner stated that “Certainly Mexico might justly charge our citizens with disgraceful robbery, while, in seeking extension of slavery, [our own citizens denied the great truths of American freedom…”

Perfect example of not letting people into your country too fast. Learn from history
The Mexican-American War, also known as the Mexican War, the U.S.-Mexican War or the Invasion of Mexico, was an armed conflict between the United States of America and the United Mexican States from 1846 to 1848.
It followed in the wake of the 1845 US annexation of Texas, which Mexico considered part of its territory, despite the 1836 Texas Revolution.
After its independence in 1821 and brief experiment with monarchy, Mexico became a republic in 1824, characterized by considerable instability, so that when war broke out in 1846, Mexico was ill-prepared for this conflict.
The war with the United States followed in the wake of decades of Indian raids in the sparsely settled north of Mexico, which prompted the Mexican government to sponsor American migration to the Mexican province of Texas to act as a buffer.
Americans and some Mexicans revolted against the Mexican government in the 1836 Texas Revolution, creating a republic not recognized by Mexico, which still claimed it as its national territory.
The 1845 expansion of US territory with its annexation of Texas escalated the dispute between the United States and Mexico to open war.
In 1844 James K. Polk, the newly-elected president, made a proposition to the Mexican government to purchase the disputed lands between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande.
When that offer was rejected, troops from the United States commanded by Major General Zachary Taylor were moved into the disputed territory of Coahuila.
These troops were then attacked by Mexican troops, killing 12 American troops and taking 52 prisoners.
These same Mexican troops later laid siege to a US fort along the Rio Grande.
This would lead to the conflict that resulted in the loss of much of Mexico's northern territory.
US forces quickly occupied Santa Fe de Nuevo México and Alta California Territory, then invaded parts of Northeastern Mexico and Northwest Mexico; meanwhile, the Pacific Squadron conducted a blockade, and took control of several garrisons on the Pacific coast farther south in Baja California Territory.
Another American army, under the command of Major General Winfield Scott, captured the capital Mexico City, marching from the port of Veracruz.
The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended and specified the major consequence of the war: the Mexican Cession of the territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo México to the United States.
The US agreed to pay $15 million to pay the physical damage of war.
In addition, the United States assumed $3.25 million of debt owed by the Mexican government to US citizens.
Mexico recognized the loss of Texas and thereafter cited the Rio Grande as its national border with the United States.
American territorial expansion to the Pacific coast had been the goal of US President James K. Polk, the leader of the Democratic Party.
The war was highly controversial in the United States, with the Whig Party, anti-imperialists and anti-slavery elements strongly opposed.
Critics in the United States pointed to heavy casualties of the US forces and high monetary cost of the conflict.
The war intensified the slavery issue in the United States, leading to bitter debates that culminated in the bloody American Civil War.
In Mexico, the war came in the middle of political turmoil, which increased into chaos during the conflict.
The military defeat and loss of territory was a disastrous blow, causing Mexico to enter "a period of self-examination ... as its leaders sought to identify and address the reasons that had led to such a debacle."
In the immediate aftermath of the war, some prominent Mexicans wrote that the war resulted in "the state of degradation and ruin" in Mexico, and saw for "the true origin of the war, it is sufficient to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it."
The shift in the Mexico-U.S. border left many Mexican citizens separated from their national government.
For the indigenous peoples who had never accepted Mexican rule, the change in border meant conflicts with a new outside power.
Sooner or later we will recover our lands; mexican lands forever !! Doesnt matter what the U.S. do, we have the sacred right to recover texas, california, colorado, nuevo mexico, arizona !! Why not ? Viva mexico ! Vivan los mexicanos !!

As time passes, the US/Mexican war is viewed increasingly as a land grab pure and simple, but there were other issues involved including British designs on Oregon and California and chronic political instability in Mexico which made a negotiated settlement (a $ deal) very difficult to achieve. Militarily, the US was lucky to do as well in the conflict as what it did, a fact which was not lost on subsequent American leaders who were more inclined to deal with their neighbor more carefully.............till now, that is.
So your saying the US doesn’t respect Mexico as much anymore military wise ?
@@dark8893 The attitude of the Trump administration towards Mexico can only be described as bizarre, and much of it seems to be based on plain ignorance.
A bad relationship with Mexico is about as profitable for the US as a bad relationship with Canada (and he seems to have that in mind as well)
President Polk's Mexican adventure may not have turned out so favorably for the United States if the British had chosen to take military issue over the Oregon dispute. For Polk personally, there was little glory to bask in. He died soon after completing his term as President, aged only 53.
russell brown thank you for the information and for educating me a little more on this topic
@@dark8893 Possibly the worst legacy of the Mexican War was that it firmly implanted the idea in the collective American military mind that all you really had to do to win battles was to turn up in overwhelming force and attack vigorously. These tactics seemed to have worked well in every engagement during the Mexican War but failed disastrously, and delivered enormous casualty lists on just about every occasion when Americans tried to use the same formula against one another.
@@russellbrown7028 They were considerably outnumbered in a lot of the battles against the Mexican army though, it was a little more complicated than you say in reality.

In February 1847, in Angostura, Santa Anna ordered the withdrawal of the Mexican Army when Taylor was clearly in disadvantage. Many historians agree that if any experienced and truly patriotic General captures Taylor and his 4500 men, this event would force a negotiation, and very likely the war ended. Lol maybe because it was taken from us?
The limits of Texas in 1836 was the Nueces River, lots of documents say that, but in that time president Polk wanted more territory, and start the war, (here in Mexico we say that is an invasion). The justification for the US government is that Mexicans were bad, cruel and despiados, limiting the development of Texans, when the American military saw the conditions in which they lived Mexicans, many commented how unfair this war era. The president Ulysses S. Grant said "Generally, the officers of the army indifferent Were Whether the annexation was consummated or not, but not so all of them For myself, I was bitterly Opposed to the measure, and to this day regard the war. , Which Resulted, as one of The most unjust ever waged by a stronger Against a weaker nation. Mexico gained its independence in 1821....
+Sara Rosenberry Aug. 24th to be exact. However that was when Spain accepted Mexico's independence. The Mexican war of Independence started a decade before.
Yeah, it started on September 15th, 1810. 1812 is the wrong year either way.
+Victor Marquez yeah I think Miguel Hidalgo was killed in 1812 in fact the only rebel leaders that survived were Guadalupe Victoria and I forgot the name of the other one but he was the third president of Mexico and Guadalupe was the first
This wasn't even about the war. You talked about like the first battle.
ARE THERE ANY GOOD BOOKS ABOUT THIS!?
Although the mexican war of independence began in 1810, independence was gained in 1821, not 1812 as stated in the video
I enjoyed the video, so thanks for the post. However, I do have to say that your pronunciation of three words (_annex_ 2:12, _reconciliation_ 3:01 and _while_ 3:59) kind of freaked me out.
After re-watching to try and figure out what you mean, I still don't really understand. They seem slightly overemphasized, but nothing to dramatic. Care to elaborate?
Before I elaborate, a few caveats: I'm not a linguist, or any other kind of expert on the English language. And although I've traveled around the US quite a bit, I haven't been everywhere, and I certainly can't be sure of how every word is pronounced everywhere in the US, much less in every other dialect of English. Also, I should state that I find nothing wrong with your pronunciation of those words - I understood what you meant when you said them, and that's the only really important thing when it comes to language. So that said...
_Annex_ - I've never before heard the stress coming in the second syllable. I've definitely heard the vowel sound spoken differently, ranging from an 'uh' to an 'an,' but I've always heard the first syllable stressed over the second syllable. Interestingly (at least to me) a quick check of dictionary.com (for whatever that's worth) does show alternative pronuncuations, with both the first and second syllable being stressed.
_Reconciliation_ - Here it's the changing of the vowel sound in the first syllable that threw me off. You used a hard E in the first syllable, so that 're-' rhymed with the word 'we,' and I've never heard that word spoken by an American using a hard E. I have heard Aussies and Kiwis pronounce it that way, but since you speak with an American accent it sounds odd. In American English, I've always heard that spoken with a softer E, so that it rhymes with 'wreck.'
_While_ - This is the one that really threw me for a loop, as somehow 'while' (normally rhymes with 'bile' or 'Nile') came out sounding like something closer to the word 'wow.'
Again, I enjoyed your video and thank you for posting it. Hopefully you take these criticisms (for lack of a better word) in the spirit in which they are intended.
Thanks

It sounded fine to me... I have no idea what these guys are going on about, I'm from Canada is that matters at all.

You left out restrictions on the Texans at the time.
The Mexican government became alarmed at the rate of immigration to Texas. At first, Mexico cut back the number of immigrants allowed to enter the territory and then later, finally closed the door entirely. Texas settlers became angry because friends and relatives were now prevented from entering Texas. Fearing that it was losing control in Texas, the Mexican government placed further restrictions on the Texan-Americans, including import taxes on anything they brought into Texas from the United States. Since most of the Texan-Americans received their goods from the United States, they objected to this additional taxation.
Not only that, but the United States paid for the Texan land they annexed, and for all of Mexico's war debts.
While the American- did pay the Mexicans, the Mexican war actually increased Mexico's war debt. Since Mexico couldn't pay its debt it was invaded by France.
And the US helped the Mexican Republic defeat and push out the "Second Mexican Empire" puppet state of Maximilian I. While the "confederate" rebellion was occurring in the US, nonetheless.
It was called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Guadalupe_Hidalgo
We had no claim on Mexico. Texas had no claim beyond the
Nueces River, and yet we pushed on to the Rio Grande and crossed it. I
am always ashamed of my country when I think of that invasion.”

Soon someday California will be Mexico's
Juan Mendoza The United States military would decimate Mexico's army in days. The Texas National Guard would be enough to tackle Mexico head on. The Culture war would be irrelevant in the US. Mexico would be in no position to take back California. There's a reason why Mexican citizens flock to the US. Out govt. is vastly superior to yours. Mexico by definition still a 3rd world country. If the US wanted it we would annex Mexico for the oil, crops and large minerals. All of which Mexico has done a shit job at taking full advantage of. Cali will stay American now and forever more.
MeanGreenLuigi No it won't I don't care I will do whatever it takes to get Mexico those states back.
JAJAJAJAJAJAJA!
let it go already
Juan Mendoza too bad so sad
Viva Mexico!
You guys are tough as hell but our technology is superior

Sorry, but the United States has already made several Mexicans suffer and just for having more territory 😔😔
Notice he didn't actually really talk about after the U.S. declared war on Mexico.

Why are comments on this page disappearing? What are you trying to silence?
Ask UA-cam.
I'd rather ask the only person on this channel with the power to remove comments. So, again, why are comments disappearing? That idiot +BloodySIRunit1 below doesn't have the ability to do it.
I am not the only one who has the power to remove comments. UA-cam automatically does this all the time. Read their community guidelines here: ua-cam.com/users/ytpolicyandsafety/communityguidelines.html
Thought Monkey Nonsense. My comments were not in violation of any community guideline. I know where the line is and I didn't cross it. You deleted them. He doesn't have the power to delete them. Only the owner of the channel and UA-cam staff can remove them, and those comments didn't cross the line. You're lying.

Eduardo Magsuci videos help me take all my tests that much better too 🙌
Nah more like “Texas history class in 5 minutes”
Propaganda piece right here...such BS!
This is the truth Mexico s land was stolen.
@Henry Son There is a Difference. Why because a Mexican is a vast mayority is a mixture of two main races Spaniards and natives. And once Hispanos citizens of the Viceroyalty of the new Spain declared their independence from Spain they named the whole territory the name of Mexico and inherited it's boundaries . And just like in the US of A in Mexico we have citizens of full European ancestry and then we have the Mestizos and the full indeginous.
@Henry Son you say the. Holy Roman Empire that was after the Roman Empire, But the Roman empire lasted for more than a thousand years
México is great and is going to be strong forever
But I

The visuals in this video are excellent...the audio is monotonous and the text is boring. This has such potential!! I recommend a redo with a rewrite and re-record...new writer, new voice talent. You could totally spruce this up!
Good feedback. I'll keep this in mind as I continue to make videos!

Mexico did not lose the war USA paid mexico for thoses lands so is a draw USA failed also to take al, of mexico like they wanted

Biggest population in what?
Well I would imagine, it's still rightful American clay though
1821 = Mexican Independence, (typo? 1812)
Just as a comment, the Mexican independence war started in 1810 and ended in 1821.
