Sounds good, I have obsessed over playing every speaker with my superlead plexi s. I find my favorite are greenbacks at 25 watts. I like most checkered 4x12 but prefer basketweave. I had a 1966 pinstripe 4x12 and got offered 5K for it but that was the best. The 2x12 cabs always seemed like it was missing something. Not as much headroom as a 4x12 cab.
25 watt Greenbacks are my fave. I used to have 2 basket weave straight cabs, great cabs and you’re right, 2x12’s leave something to be desired. They’re close but not quite there.
You read my mind, brother. Lmao. Greenbacks are my favorite speakers, as they always have been, especially when it comes to playing them through plexi and modded plexi amps, both being my favorite kind of amps, when it comes to Friedman and Metropoulos Modded Plexi Amps. The Greenbacks also pair up well, in a 4x12 speaker cabinet, with 2 greenbacks on top, and 2 vintage 30's on the bottom, like the standard 4x12 speaker cabinets that Dave Friedman sells. I've mentioned the same to Jimmy that you just did, several times. Take Care, Brother.
Sounds awesome just like all of your other playing videos and aound demo videos always do. Sounds great with those Creambacks, but kinda sacreligious at the same time, witout your trusty, frequently used Greenbacks, these days! 😂❤...You're Da Man Brother.
I have the same amp. Bought 13 years ago. Still brand new not a scratch on it! Had it re-tubed once. Works like a charm! Thinking about having a mod done now. Don't know which one? cuz they all sound good! The Jose mod etc... I really like the sound you got here! I will look up Apache Amps to learn about the mod upgrades
Nice man! I've got a Plexi clone coming in and I was wondering how it would sound through a 2x12. Sounds fantastic. Even crunchier / gainier than what I was expecting.
As someone who has a 1987x aka 50watt one of these it really sounds like hes got something pushing it or those are real hot pickups because i know my JP LP has antquities and is not nearly as crunchy jumping channels and diming em both..i have ppimv too
Dazed and Confused :^D. You have your amp dialed with Bass 0 Middle Treble 10? I have an SLP and I have the Bass at 9 and the Mid and Treble at 3-4. Is there a science behind this?
Don't no about a science to it but having the treble and mids up does add gain.. At the time I made this vid the amp had the Larmar MV, it sounded flubby with the bass up. This amp now has the Friedman BE Mod.
hey cool tone by the way ....do you really max out treble mids and presence with no bass at all ...and plug into bright channel ??!! theres something i dont get here...its normally bright as hell if you only max the presence is there a jumper cable inside your inputs ??thanks
steeve thomas Hi Steve, Thanks for watching. I used to play stock Super Leads with everything dimed and variac'd to 90 volts. At those volumes there's plenty of low end. This amp has since been modified by Dave Friedman, and I don't need to run the tone controls like that anymore. Old habits die hard, I guess. Cheers!
Great tone! Was this straight out of the amp or did you use any boost/distortion pedal? I bought a YJM100 earlier this summer and haven't achived such a hot sound as yours, maybe I'm just not eq:ing it right?
So my response is 5 years late, but you know with a "plexi" style amp you gotta crank the volume way up to get the saturation you want, right? That's the whole purpose of this guy's master volume mod: so he can get that cranked sound without destroying his hearing or having the police show up at his door.
great playing and great sound!!! there's a boost pedal in front or is only the Marshall? is a Master volume pre PI or is a kind or Power Scaling? thanx
Hi elswan64, There is an Apache Boost on the floor but it's not on for this video. I used it with this amp in my latest video you can see on my video page. The master is a ppimv, no Power Scaling. Glad you liked it! Jim
I see that on your videos the Marshall bass knob is always on 0 but you have ever bass enough ;) also on Germino 45 clip,,,,I can't use the Marshall without bass.... The volume II is active also without the patch cable from I and II ? thanx
Yeah, it cuts better that way for me. If I'm using a strat I'll raise the bass up more. This particular Marshall has plenty of low end. Volume II does influence the bright channel even without a patch, it's not as prominent but it's there. Cheers, Jim
Hey Jimmy! Great playing as usual. Enjoy watching all of your videos. How do you compare the Manlius Hot Rod 59's to the Motor City 2nd Degree's. I love my 2nd degree but thought about trying the Manlius Hot Rod 59's in a upcoming build. Thanks!
Thanks Ryan! I think the MCP's are a little more chewy on the attack ( if that makes sense). They both use A5's. I had my HR59's switched to A2's because I wanted more early VH at the time. The A2's gave them a softer attack, then I went with the MCP's (I'm from the Motor City). I'm still using the HR59's in the neck positions of my LP's.
Hi! awesome demo! could you please do a similar demo with this exact setup but with a drop tuning, like heavy rock riffing and soloing in Drop C? (Not Metal! ;P i mean more like 70s heavy rock in drop C) im so eager to know how a plexi with master sounds with that kind of music style. I have searched all over for a plexi w. master demo that does NOT play EVH or AC/DC covers, but more of a heavy style of rock =) Cheers!
Hi Jim, A great, great tone there. Can I ask how 'loud' this amp was in the room when you recorded it? The opening shot of the MV knob on the rear panel suggests it was notched around '9 o'clock'? Sounds amazing!
Jim Burkard Thanks for the reply, Jim. Can I please ask you to refer me to a good web page detailing the nature of a PPIMV mod (which I assume this is)? I just obtained a stock 1997 SLP, and would like to achieve the kind of tone you're getting here at the volume level you described. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)
Sweet! Have a look a the Metro Amps Forum and search there for ppimv or Larmar and you'll find what you need. Lots of knowledgeable guys there with great info.
Hi, Jimmy... I´m new to all this... I bought a 1959 slp year 2003... what should I do to play at home volume level (low) and do not lose tone? Thanks. Greetings from Argentina, my friend!
Hi, I would have a PPIMV installed by a good tech. That helps a lot, it's not the same as cranking it up but it'll get you good low volume tone. That's the simple answer. You could also get a load box/attenuator, power amp or load box with speaker impulse responses (digital speakers). Salu!
Thanks for the quick response, Jimmy!! I was told that with a Master Volume I won`t lose so much tone, than with an attenuator... but, as I said... I am not sure about anything... which of the two, would you recommend? By the way... my name is Felipe.
I have owned Marshalls and Les Paul and always chased that tone. I love listening to Jimmy page/Led Zep. But after owning the stuff I realized it's not the gear or the tone, I don't think it sounds that good. It's all his playing and choice of notes for melodies that does it for me :)
Nope, the gear absolutely helps! Marshall had the rare fortune of making the right gear at the right time and it's a testament to their versatility, longevity that they are still highly revered and played to this day.
@@eyedunno8462 I totally agree, right time right place. But that was half a century ago or more. Today there are many options that sound just as good or even better. But only Jimmy Page can play like Jimmy Page. That was my main point :)

None taken brother, I don’t care for the tone here. At this time it had a ppimv, not great with this circuit. It’s been modified by Friedman for some time now,

I don’t know anyone who plays with a Plexi’s Treble on 0. The tone of any Marshall doesn’t come out unless Treble and Mids are dialed in enough. They sound boomy and sledgy without them. He could maybe dial out a tad Presence but that’s all subjective.
The best amplifier ever made.
