Thank you for the wisdom in this video. I too have bought "quiet" horses only to have them become wild maniacs 2 or 3 weeks later. I never thought of a drug test but I will from now on. Thank you!
Great video! My first horse changed personalities after a month but it was because of the temp dropping... she's consistently relaxed when it's 80+ out, but hot and spooky in cool weather. We've been working on it but now we are also in the market for a second, calmer horse that my mother can ride confidently
Rae Rose I know that.... my horse is always in a very bad mood when it's rainy😂 if he could talk he would probably complain all the time😂 and as soon as it gets warm he is suddenly in a great mood and very motivated
Great advice, esp. about the bloodwork. Super smart about bringing a horse up to 100mph, then seeing how long it takes the horse to settle itself back down. 🐴👍❤
Thanks for the tips you talk about physical issues how about behavior issue or lake of training their are a lot issues you should consider when you going to buy new hors the best to have experience person with you thanks
My friend who generously takes me riding on her 20 year old Arabian mare bought this mare's mother sight unseen. When the mare arrived she was gorgeous and initially quite calm, then about a week later she began to deteriorate until she appeared literally insane. After that first week was never handleable let alone rideable- and she was pregnant with Raven which was NOT part of the mare's description. She was, however, stunningly gorgeous. My friend figured the mare had been drugged and I think it's likely she's right. My friend kept the mare for a year, sold her on to another person with full disclosure of the poor creature's mental state, and kept the filly. Raven is nothing like her mother except in beauty, and is a real treasure.
Always VET CHECK IT!! And use your own vet not one they use or recommend. You never know if there is a deal between the two of them. ALWAYS USE YOUR OWN VET !!! I've done it and refused the sale just because of vets drawing blood. Stay Safe Everyone!! 💖 A former Paramedic in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 💖 🇨🇦
I always tell people, if I can't go with them to look at the horse, is use your own vet as well. Not any vet the seller wants you to use. I always ask the vet for a Coggins Test to be run, even if they have paperwork showing the horse had one in the past six months, and a second vial. When the seller sees the second vial, I say that that vial is for another Coggins and Drug Screen if I find it necessary. But ALWAYS use a vet of your choosing, not one that the seller recommends.
Do you have any advice on getting your horse less bendy, yes I said it my horse has to much bend, doesn't have a good stop, and is a hot head?? What can I do? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
I’m a 10 year old bout to turn 11 and I have LOTS of riding experience in my life! I go to lessons I have fallen off before like 2 times I know how to canter all that stuff. We are planning on getting me this horse that’s an 7-8 year old and I get to test ride it. Would it still be okay for a almost 11 year old to test ride Roo? (He is a gelding and is a Rocky Mountain trial horse)
Yep good advice with the drug test, bought a horse from a ridding center at auction, they were selling because of "drought"... Well they rode it bareback quiet as,,,. Got it home , a week latter got it in to ride it could not even get the saddle on its back .
stephenie muller maybe they rode it bareback because it had spinal issues and couldn’t tolerate a saddle... in this case, I would suggest a call to the vet /equine chiropractor. Some horse’s issues are simply due to discomfort
Mr Warwick I was wondering if you were unconfortable sitting in that saddle? Ants in the pants maybe? **GRINS** Awesome video as always. Cheers from a fellow Aussie.
I wish I'd watched this before buying a Fjord cross mare three weeks ago. Good age (4), good cross for my purpose, pretty green which I was okay with. What was definitely not okay was the sheer degree of ferocity new horse unleashed on my steady, calm twenty year old mare. Beat the shit outbof her one morning just before dawn, and killed her. This new mare had a complete PPE with an equine vet in Oregon. And radiographs of her hind legs. Absolutely no signs of trouble, nicely behaved mare. She traveled well, acclimated to the chilly weather here in Maine, had no problems with the change of hay and feed. But two days after coming here there was my Belgian X dead in the snow. PM fine by me and my Amish neighbors who came to cut up and remove the carcass showed broken ribs, huge contusions, busted innards. The Fjord cross took to eating the bloody snow after the body was cut up and removed, even though she has a mineral and salt lick with added selenium since we're in a deficient area. Wish I'd thought to ask the vet to do that drug screen. I still have the Fjord cross, couldn't sell her at a huge loss because of what happened. I couldn't live with myself if I rehomed her and she mangled somebody else's horse.
Buyers who are inexperienced with horses, and cause problems in a previously well-behaved horse happens much more often than sellers drugging horses. Horses are very perceptive, they can change fast around people who don't know what they're doing
Either the saddle doesn't fit, or the girth is too loose. Or both. About buying a horse the advice is great, draw some blood. We bought one at auction back in the 80's that seemed quiet, but the next morning it leaped out from under the saddle blanket! Vet said he could blood test it but advised no pathology company would deal with it for fear of getting involved in lengthy litigation. Hah! I sold it as dog meat a year later, not because it was dog meat, but because I simply didn't want it on my reputation, and openly said so. It was very bad on the ground and getting worse, had some big syndrome going, although it was quite safe to ride. I made sure the dealer who'd brought it to the local sale-yard never did so again, he'd sold a truckload of hidden issues at auction that day; I'd found out over time they all had problems. (Later that same day I topped the auction with one of my own 4 y olds.) The doggers recognised the mare from the previous year, and she went back into the system, sold to some other poor sucker, I was later told. To be moved on, and on, and on! The very best horses are rarely sold. They are our "keepers".
I'm absolutely appalled by your story and how terrible you handled that situation. You bought the horse, it's YOUR responsibility to help the horse. You failed him. You decided to murder him instead of being a good horse owner. Not only that, but you openly admit to doing this like you're proud, and you attend auctions with bad intentions. People like you are the ones who give true horse people bad names, and you should never own a horse again. Sorry not sorry. I'm 21 years old and am proud to know that I'm never going to be like you when I'm your age, miss ma'am! Get some education please. You're doing a horrible disservice to the horse world. And judging from your profiles information section, you seem to have mental issues. I hope you seek help soon. Best of luck.😭
just a little tip, im sure you already know but maybe unaware while youre focusing on something else. you were a bit off balance and the horse (seemed) to keep repositioning for comfort. Great horse! and a great trainer. But in some videos when you arent working the horse and youre just sitting, you are a bit wiggily :) never a bad thing! tests the horses patience
And sometimes they box it in and changes its food and doesn't understand why the horse changes. They have ill-fitting tack and don't really know what they are doing. And then it's the horses fault, and the one who sold it. Or it's like you said, fake seller..
That comment should say "PM done by me and two Amish helpers." The vet said a Granulosa theca cell tumor would make a mare constantly angry but this mare is a big goof for people.
It needs to do all they say it can in front of you with little prior notice if possable and with a on the spot blood or urine test done if it’s for a child always get drug screening done because your kids are more important than mone
This happened to me. Beautiful palomino mare was so calm in the barn. Got her home and I think the drugs had worn off by then. Crazy, bitchy horse. Only kept her for a year. $4,000 gone!
And if the vendor tells you a vet check isn’t needed, the horse is sound, GET ONE!
Lol, 1971, parents buy 5th old green broke mare for 11yr old ( who has survived 3yrs riding horrible bolting Welsh pony) the results? Magic!

Thanks for the tips Warwick! Awesome video.
I love these video's and that horse is absolutely stunning!!

Is your cinch too loose? Does that saddle not fit? What's going on?
Great advise BTW.
That's what I thought, too! :D
The horse is relaxing one hind foot and changes the side all the time. It seems to have a hard time to stand on both hind legs

Very important to get vet to X-ray feet, legs, respiratory system.

I am totally blind, how can I buy a miniature horse, on low income, to train or to be trained as a guide animal for me?
Told my mom we will ALWAYS need a vet check. They aren’t cheap but when I’m looking at a horse that was raced for 4 years, we’re gonna need one
Do you have any advice on getting your horse less bendy, yes I said it my horse has to much bend, doesn't have a good stop, and is a hot head?? What can I do? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
Try using outside rein and make sure your horse moves its shoulders off outside rein. Best wishes.
+luckysteerroper OK Thank you!!!
He has lovely huge brown eyes so now I own him. Who cares that he was unhandled at 6. Damn do I love my horse!

The horse doesn't look comfortable shifting legs and Mr Warwick shifting the saddle often. Good advise.
You might want to gain some knowledge before criticizing.
Mr Warwick I was wondering if you were unconfortable sitting in that saddle? Ants in the pants maybe? **GRINS** Awesome video as always. Cheers from a fellow Aussie.
It looks to me like the girth may be a little loose. The saddle doesn't seem to be sitting securely.
The horse has to keep adjusting too. But they both seem pretty casual about it :D
Does look like he could use a breastcollar. He's pretty round.
I see Reiner's do this all the time. Drives me nuts. I don't get it. Do the saddles fit badly or the cinches loose? Must bug the horse too.
I wish I'd watched this before buying a Fjord cross mare three weeks ago.

Whatever happened to Tom?? I’ve seen Petey, Bundy, Rey, Sherlock, even Albert, but haven’t seen Tom 🧐
Ok we get all that , now tighten your girth , Warwick LOL
