There is always sunshine when Sina takes on the cream of the crop!
THE SONG - "Sunshine of Your Love" was written by Cream's guitarist Eric Clapton and bassist Jack Bruce with lyrics by poet-songwriter Pete Brown. It's the second track on their second album 'Disraeli Gears'. The US distributor was Atlantic Records run by Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler so the song and album were recorded at Atlantic Studios, on 60th Street in NYC. Recording engineer Tom Dowd had designed the studio himself, in 1959, with an Ampex 8-track machine and a $12,000 (1959 dollars!) console.
The recording history is a bit unclear. It's known that Cream's work visas were expiring within a few days so the album is said to have been made within 3-1/2 days. It's also been stated that Cream's manager Robert Stigwood arranged for the recording session and it was to start on April 3, 1967 so recording could not have continued into May 1967 as reported by some sources. Perhaps knowing the precise dates is expecting too much. We do know the release and chart histories.
'Disraeli Gears' was released on Nov 2, 1967. "Sunshine of Your Love", the second single, was released in Dec 1967 (Sep 1968 in the UK). 'Disraeli Gears' peaked at #4 on Billboard 200 on June 29, 1968 after 30 weeks on the chart. It spent a total of 83 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. "Sunshine of Your Love", one of their most popular and commercially successful songs, entered Billboard's Hot 100 at #74 on Jan 13, 1968 and peaked at #5 on Aug 31, 1968 after 23 weeks. It was last seen at #25 on Sep 21,1968 after a total of 26 weeks on the chart.
The songwriting process was described by Pete Brown in a SongFacts interview, "Did you hear the riff for "Sunshine of Your Love" when you wrote the words to it?"
"Pete: Yes. We had been working all night and had gotten some stuff done. We had very little time to write for Cream, but we happened to have some spare time and Jack came up with the riff. He was playing a stand-up - he still had his stand-up bass, because he'd been a jazz musician. He was playing stand-up bass, and he said, "What about this then?" and played the famous riff. I looked out the window and wrote down, "It's getting near dawn." That's how it happened. It's actually all true, really, all real stuff."
THE DRUM TRACK - The band was having trouble getting the feel and cohesion right for "Sunshine". Baker originally had used a faster groove that just wasn't working. Tom Dowd claimed "I said, 'Have you ever seen an American Western where the Indian beat - the downbeat - is the beat? Why don't you play that one. Ginger went inside and they started to run the song again. When they started playing that way, all of the parts came together and they were elated." Baker later refuted that claim and said it was his idea.
Drum Magazine wrote, "Baker plays a cool variation on the Motown groove, with quarter-notes on the snare and bass drum notes that punctuate the guitar riff, while opening the hi-hat on the & of 4."
THE DRUMMER - According to Drummerworld, "Baker bought his first drum kit at the age of 15. At the age of 16 he left home, and spent a year on the road." Then "he decided to make his own drum kit, "I got this great idea for using Perspex," recalls Ginger. "It was like wood to work on, but it was smooth, and it would save painting the inside of the drum shell with gloss paint. So I bent the shells and shaped them over a gas stove." Ginger made the kit in 1961 and used it until 1966, when he bought his first Ludwig set. Sadly, it was this home-made set that Jack Bruce would demolish with his upright bass in an on-stage brawl with Baker during the Graham Bond days. Bruce later recalled that the kit sounded spectacular -- like no other kit he'd heard before."
Baker always considered himself to be a jazzer. His inspirations were Phil Seamen, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Max Roach. He got to play with them all and considered them his friends. In the early 60s, he got a gig that required reading, which he couldn't, so he faked it and taught himself to read. He also mastered the rudiments. Although he inspired young heavy metal drummers, in 2012, he told Music Radar unequivocally, "I hate heavy metal."
THE DRUM COVER - Rosanna had a chance to chat with Sina about "Sunshine of Your Love" -
RO: This is your first Cream / Ginger Baker cover. Were you aware of him as a young drummer or did you come to know him later on?
SINA: To be honest, I wasn't really aware of him. I never heard a lot of Cream. But I recently watched the very interesting 'Beware of Mr Baker' documentary and I thought now it's time to do a cover.
RO: When did you become aware of him and was his drumming interesting or inspirational?
SINA: We already talked about Ginger Baker in Drummers Institute. We even briefly talked about "Sunshine of Your Love" and how unusual this groove is. That's when I first really became aware of him.
RO: He apparently did try playing "Sunshine..." in the early days with an entirely different groove at a faster tempo. He eventually settled on this unusual groove that emphasizes the 1 and 3 and the snare only comes in during the chorus and some fills. As a drummer, how would you describe his style and this groove?
SINA: This song really shows the influence of African music that Ginger Baker listened to in his freetime. The groove is technically very basic, but to come up with such a basic and 'easy' (not talking about the fills here) groove is not that easy. I am really impressed with Ginger's creativity.
RO: Baker has a strong jazz background. Do you hear any jazz elements in his playing or does he seem more like a rock drummer?
SINA: In this particular song, his jazz roots are not that obvious. But you can hear where he comes from in other songs he played on. In this song you can clearly hear that he listened a lot to African music and African drumming.
RO: You made an effort to really nail the drum part. Considering its unusual nature, was it difficult to do?
SINA: Technically, this is not very hard to play, except for the fast fills at the end. But it's quite hard to get used to this kind of groove. It's especially hard not to hit a cymbal after every fill...
So, as they say, make hay while the sun shines! See y'all next week! :D

I came looking for Sunshine of Your Love because nobody should ever sequence a really Tom-driven rock beat without revisiting it. This is one of the clearest audiovisual guides out there.
Beginner to intermediante drummers looking to get better should watch this.
Drummers who are already at least this good, but looking to get even better than that, should watch this.
People doing sequencing and programming who have no understanding whatsoever of how a real-life kit works should also watch this.

Ms. Doering: THANK YOU. This is one of my all-time faves, from my 60's days as a Vietnam Veteran and 30+ years as a hippie, rockin' out to so many fantastic musicians. I know that Mr. Baker is smiling down from Heaven ["out of the way, you harps!!"], hearing and watching your generation really doing justice to Rock Classics. It was that tribal drum theme that made this one of ny faves, and if I may respectfully say so, you make us proud to know that great music is still alive because of you and other youths, including the Taiwanese and other girl/lady 'street drummers' of Asia who "represent," each in their own very special way. You have a gift, Sina, and Thank You for sharing. Rock on! Love and respect from San Francisco.

      Allow me to add:
      3. The recording technology available even at a reasonable enough cost to be affordable for home studios today is far superior to what even existed in the late 60''s at any price.
      4. Sina has had exposure to and training in far more styles of drumming. Back when this was released it simply wasn't possible to carry your music with you and listen on the go, and repeated listening is the first stage of learning.

@@TStorms005 actually George Baker (no relation to Peter "Ginger" Baker) is very much alive, he is from the Netherlands (just like my ancestry, Germans marrying Dutch was common a couple of centuries ago?). Ginger was English. Little Green Bag was a 45 rpm I used to own!!! :)

I came back from Germany in 67 to find this thing on the air and played every 5 minutes on the radio.
I was an instant fan. Spent the summer in Roxbury on the beach [Bottom of Long Island]. Seems 5 lifetimes ago. How cool was this song.
    So...Playing along to Ginger Baker...
We did this song a jillion times in our band.
Nothing like setting you standards at the top. Good job lil lady...

Great cover, Sina, this old guy thanks you for giving the old songs new life with your passion. This song, along with "Badge" from "Goodbye" are my favorite Cream songs. I was a DJ on college radio when this was on the charts, and I loved playing it LOUD in the studio.
The one thing I really appreciate about you Sina, is the honesty you give every cover. You always place your drum part right where it belongs in the song - whether way in the background where the vocal or another instrument is prominent, or in a song like this one, where the drum part drives the song. Your skill at knowing how best to play these parts is simply unmatched. Kudos!!

In 1968 Cream became my go to band and Ginger Baker was the greatest drummer anywhere, until now. I was 17 years old then and listened to so much awesome music from that era. Sina is the only drummer that has worked on ginger Bakers style and pulled it off. I have seen many interviews with Ginger where he talked about going to tribal areas in Africa to enhance his style which is based on the skills of the tribes. Sina is a great student which makes her an awesome master of her craft.

When I left my teen years, there were two AM radio hits that had been so overplayed, I swore I'd never listen to them again: "Light My Fire" by The Doors, and "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream. But clearly -- it being you, Sina -- I had to make an exception. I'm glad I did. 👍
This is an excellent recreation of what was, back then, a revolutionary drum track, with its 1/3 time signature and "tribal" tom rhythm, which elevated the song beyond traditional blues to classic rock status. You really captured Ginger Baker's spindly style, which always seemed "loose" but was precisely calculated to put every beat where it would have the greatest impact -- in effect, creating an almost continuous fill.
Also: I KNEW you weren't going to go with a second bass drum, so I was curious what the modifications would be for your kit. They were perfectly orchestrated, of course, with the double bass kick providing the anchor. (I had to research what you probably already knew: Baker didn't use the second bass drum for the studio recording of this tune.) I WAS surprised, though, to see that you barely used the high hat except as an extra crash symbol. So, the mystery: what was Sina's left foot doing for nearly 5 minutes? Just keeping time? 😀
Splendidly entertaining and, again, great camera angles & cutting so that we could see every hit. Thank you, Sina. 👏
