The live version, released as a single off of the "Evening with John Denver" live double album, was the version that actually hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. One of his 4 #1 hits; or 5, if you count "Leaving on a Jet Plane".
You should do "Calypso" next. It's about oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, his ship and crew. Cousteau had a popular TV show about his journeys in the '60s and '70s, and John Denver wrote a rousing and beautiful song about his ship, the Calypso.
Love JD.Saw him at Machester Apollo as a kid in the 70's.My seat at the back row was badly damaged so we end transferred right up at the front seeing John's sweet face peering down on us.All the hits-Annies Song,Sunshine,Calypso,Rocky Mountain high....even an airing of one of the best xmas songs i can tolerate-Aspen Glow.Just the right side of schmaltzy. He knew his way around a guitar so he did.
This was great ! My 7th grade home room teacher was a massive John Denver fan and I was in 7th grade when this album came out. It inspired me to learn how to play guitar. “Gramma’s Featherbed” and “Matthew” are some of my favs from this time period as well. Good job guys ! Thanks for covering this for us!🙂🙏
This is such a catchy song. I haven't heard it in years, and I still remember every word. The line "Well I got me a fine wife, I got me an old fiddle" is art imitating life. I don't think Nick has a fiddle, but he sure has a fine wife.
@@tombrearton3435 very good, correct answer, correct spelling .. I've worked there for 25 years😄 By the way home of Kraftwerk and Die Toten Hosen, Germany's most famous (former) Punk band, awesome performances also outside of Germany, you can for example anybody in Argentina ask, the will know 🤘
Along with John I can say, "Thank God, I'm a country boy!" I was born and raised country, and when I breathe my last, I will die country! Great song! There is a live version with John playing guitar, Glen Campbell on banjo, Roger Miller on fiddle, and Johnny Cash on guitar. Great video, great song!
I saw him live twice. The first time with my church youth group in a coffee house in Minneapolis before he changed his name and the other time at the Kennedy Center in DC
John Denver was also a member of the Wrecking Crew a group of studio musicians from the early 60's to the 70's that played on most of early Rock records.
Hi Guys, this was great. Love Joh Denver. His live tv shows were massive here in England in the 70's where the whole family could sit around the tv watching together. ... Groups using the washboard ... Did you know The Beatles ... before they became The Beatles were called The Quarrymen and used a washboard in the band ?.... It was known here in England as "Skiffle Music" started by a guy called "Lonnie Donegan" [ pronounced Don ee gan ] who was a famous songwriter musician here at the time with his records like " The Rock Island Line", which John Lennon loved. Lonnie was the King of Skiffle and he influenced many an artist of the 60's including The Beatles. Byeee Jim X
Rocky Mountain High really must be your next song by the great John Denver. It’s about Colorado! I was big into his music as a teen and saw him a few times in concert. My absolute favorite is The Eagle and the Hawk, it’s short but impactful. Calypso and Sunshine on my Shoulders would be great to hear as well.
My dad owned this album and played it often, so I am very familiar with it. Kind of cheesy, but lots of memorable songs. If you liked this one you should try "Grandma's Feather Bed".
This track was played regularly when I was a Kid. As-well as Annie's Song my Late Mothers Name. John was a great Singer. slapped my thigh & Tapped my feet from start to finish 🤠
Good reaction! If you want a kind of fun bonus, do a YT search for "ram truck thank god I'm a country boy". In 2019, Dodge Ram did a commercial with a band called the Tennessee Kids (Justin Timberlake's band?) covering this song. As someone who's been an enormous John Denver fan for nearly 50 years, I can say I was just delighted by the cover (it both has a contemporary edge and also leans very heavily country) and the commercial. I'm sure there have been a ton of covers, but I point to that because not only is it good, but it shows the staying power of John Denver's iconic music. Definitely do "Take Me Home, Country Roads" next!
Music my Mother played during my childhood. A sunny disposition and a benevolent sense of life. John Denver (obviously), Dr. Hook, Boney M and The Stylistics. What a mixture - thanks Mum.
This song has banjo in it. A good song to listen to to hear mandolin is a Loggins and Messina song that you covered in a recent marathon. The song title is "Be Free". Jim Messina plays mandolin and sings lead in that song.
People from the more mountainous parts of the UK moved into The Smokey Mountain regions of the US because it reminded them of home. They brought with them the every day instruments and music. The music would be called Bluegrass named after the Bluegrass of Kentucky but included the other states in this region.
Nick: I'm a guitarist too and I thought I would say how I differentiate between the sound of banjo and mandolin. The differences are subtle but as a guitarist, I'm sure it will resonate with you. The biggest thing I hear is that the mandolin has all the strings doubled up, kind of like a 12-string guitar. But it gives it a slightly different picked sound. The other thing is the resonance difference between the two. The banjo is like a drum with strings on it and the resonant qualities of the shell is different than the wooden quality of the mandolin.
What a great fun reaction. I'm so glad you have returned to John Denver. This is great. The guy on the fiddle is the great John Martin Sommers, who also wrote this.
I agree 100% with what you've just posted Colin....Nice one !!! Nick and Lex thanks guys!! It's a good idea to do reactions like this!!!really enjoyed it!!!! Thank you.
The live album, _"An Evening with John Denver",_ is probably his best. This is on that as well, although it wasn't written by him. The album was also a film recording of the show, shown on British TV in the '70s. My mother was a big fan, and that show convinced me that John Denver was not just a load of old pap. My favourites are: The Music Is You Farewell Andromeda Rocky Mountain High The Eagle and the Hawk The others are slow but beautiful: Summer Rhymes & Reasons Poems, Prayers and Promises This Old Guitar {:o:O:}
Does it have to be a hit song before you listen to it? Because he's had some good songs. And one of my favorites that wasn't on the radio but it is an absolutely beautiful song is Boy From The Country. The live version from Aspen is gorgeous. Look it up take a listen
I am a couuuuntry boiiiiiiiiii 😆 but I didn't recognize John Denver. The only country singers I would recognize are Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash .... oh, and Dolly Parton ... Fun reaction by the way 😂🤘
It is commendable that John had the forethought to name himself Denver, in preparation for this revelation. He could have become John Boulder or John Vail. Johnny Vail! Sounds positively '50s. The man was truly a goat, and by that, I mean Capricorn. And wasn't John Denver just radiant as Gilligan! Oh wait. What's that? It was Bob? Lemme rephrase: And wasn't John Bob just radiant as Gilligan! Amazing the things you learn around here.
Bluegrass and "country" music derive from Appalachian music that was made by predominantly Scottish and Irish and English early American immigrants. It has close ties to Celtic music and traditional English folk, but 200+ years of divergence and regional variation.
For yet another side of John Denver, check out his recitation of The Box by Kendrew Lascelles. I used to recite it before doing karaoke to One Tin Soldier. To me, they go hand in hand. #nickandlexrequest
This will probably make no sense unless you are a Baltimore Oriole baseball fan (which I'm guessing you aren't). This song is played during the 7th inning stretch at every home game. So, in baseball there are 9 innings and each team gets to bat (offense) and pitch (defense) against each other 9 times, with three outs per segment. (I never realized how complicated this is until now). So, when each team has three out opportunity then that is an inning. In the 7th inning, after the visiting team bats (offense) and they proceed to the field to play defense and await the home team to bat, the fans in the seats all stand up to "stretch". It's a tradition that goes back over 100 years. Every home team has some entertaining song they play. Many play, "God Bless America". But in Baltimore Maryland they play this song, and no one knows why. Well, they do, sort of...people love it. It's like a little party with everyone singing and clapping together. It's become a tradition. SO, as an avid Oriole fan, I have heard this song, seems like a gazillion times. And I smile because I love baseball. 🙂 banjo, Hi Marley!!
Check out Larkin Poe's little duet of this song. Looks like they recorded it in a bedroom. So good! Vocals and Rebecca Lovell on the mandolin. ua-cam.com/video/JO8Sc05FZa0/v-deo.html
John Denver wasn't Southern - this is Country, as the title implies. Bluegrass is a genre that has origins in Kentucky and is very popular straight from there to Canada's Yukon and Alaska. This is my favorite JD album.
Banjo might not seem hard… but a lot of the difficulty is in the right hand “rolls”. It is a bit confusing cuz it a G tuned instrument. I was able to play ukulele and mandolin but gave up on banjo… but I have one so I bet I’ll try again someday….just didn’t click with me.
Hi guys , im sorry im not a John Denver fan , i am a big Genesis , ELP, Yes , Pink Floyd fan tho and listen to your reactions to my favourite bands. Can i just recommend a band to you . I have recently been listening to a band of the seventies from Germany called Jane , My favs are ,Fire , water earth and air. Lady and together albums I just thought you may like , just saying . Lots of people play air guitar but few can play the air fiddle, haha! Good ear, country music originated with Celtic immigrants
The live version of this is the one you hear more often on the radio.

Need to see the song preformed LIVE !!!
John is spectacular. More please.
John had such a lovely voice...
*~ John Denver was HUGE in the 1970s. This was a #1 hit in the US and Canada. ~*
Rocky Mountain High would be another great John Dener song to react to. I think it's his best song. Great reaction guys!
John Denver was one of the most versatile and greatest singer songwriters of American music!

He gave us all many, many musical gems !!
RIP John🥲

Love seeing all the smiles and laughter. Blissful love!
This song is definitely a good representation of what they call bluegrass.
First of all in Country music it is a Fiddle, not a violin, and yes technically they are the same instrument but played very differently in the genres
“Country Road” … “Rocky Mountain High” … also “Grandma’s Feather Bed” by John Denver is another great lesser known song . 🎸🔥👍
John Denver was also a member of the Wrecking Crew a group of studio musicians from the early 60's to the 70's that played on most of early Rock records.
The live version of this song really gets the crowd going. It's on UA-cam.

Hope you review more of his music.
Love your reactions!!!!
To hear his versatility, check out:

“For You,” and
“The Wings That Fly Us Home”
I'm amazed you haven't reacted to Rocky Mountain High. You'll love it!

Hey you two - you have to listen to Calypso by John Denver - yet another side to him. Stay safe xx
Motion seconded!
Starwood in Aspen is an underrated song of his that I don't see get a lot of reactions. It's melancholic and beautiful.
The live version of this was played during the seventh inning stretch at Orioles games for years.
The live version is even better!
Great reaction!

This music might originally have been called Hillbilly music, as it came from the hill country like the Appalachian Mountains.
Song is played at every 7th inning stretch of every Baltimore Orioles game to this day since it was released in the 70s
Rhymes and reasons is a great JD song.
Double Air violin with Stank Face! A new standard. 😄

In country music, it's called a fiddle, not a violin.
