I have changed my mind about wave pools. Build them everywhere. I have been surfing since 1968 and have surfed all over California, Hawaii and Indonesia. I grew up just north of SF, where historically the surf has been less crowded than further south. I surfed this SoCal spot in the late '70s with eight or nine guys out, and it was almost this good. I rarely surf anymore - mainly because of ridiculous crowds, even north of SF. (Admittedly, if i went further north, i would find some great empty waves.) So now I say: Build wavepools. Make them all world class. Keep them open 24/7/366. Charge $1 for an all day pass. Build them all around the edges of San Francisco Bay, wherever there are former shipyards and industrial sites. Build them on inland ship channels on the East Coast and along the Gulf Coast, as well as in the Great Lakes, and basically anywhere that humans industrialized during the 20th century. Revitalize these dead industrial zones with wave pools. Make use of existing bodies of water and only build on shoreline landscapes that have already been brutalized by man. Build top quality wave pools every few miles in these messed up places. In big rivers that flow through big cities, build excellent standing waves, dozens of them. Make surfing as popular as baseball or football. Popularize it to the extreme. In 10 years, 100 million young people will be surfing better than Kelly, Felipe, Gabriel or any of today's top cats. Lopez, MR, Shaun and Simon will be a distant memory. And maybe the wild, unpredictable, mysterious ocean waves will be less clogged up.
The problem is with the crowd is when sandspit starts to get big it means anything far North just gets too scary to surf so everyone comes to Santa Barbara.
I love watching the rides at this point. It's so random unless you ride it all of the time I guess. All I would say is, pick a ride and stay with it to the end. I did just sub and pushed the bell so I want to see more BUT I want to see complete rides.
For those that are complaining on crowds... Well if the world keeps populating like it is, what do you expect? This is growth, economic growth, like the government needs....just like your current president and the president before him, and the president before him has wanted to aim for. Economic growth = more people. Your country has approx. 330 million people, my country which is around the same size has approx. 25 million. Unfortunately your country has a big influence on mine. I hope life plays out fair (i.e. Trump not re-alected, Morrison NOT re-elected).
Just you and 150 of your closest friends!
such an amazing wave such a bummer 80% of the ride is just dodging people.

Im so glad you dont surf anymore, because you talk wayyyy to long
Lineups everywhere suck
They'd go broke charging $1 a day, but I get your point.
DaddiesPimpHandIsStrong Enjoy 8th grade.
Anyone who doesn't twitter, is ok in my book. Have a good day.
This place always looks like the most chaotic line-up ever!
no wave is worth that kind of crowd.
ever seen snapper rocks in gold coast?
I was thinking the same thing! Geeez
That crowd makes me anxious -- I had to turn off the video after 4 minutes.
U ever hooked in to a grinder at spit?
Nothing better than a fun waves with a couple of friends
Looks like an Obstacle Course Competition! Some people need a crash course at the School of Hard Knocks on how to stay the F¥€% out of the way.
That crowd makes the backwash look enticing
I love the guy in tge florescent green on the inside picking up on all the scraps...lol
He’s got a great poop-stance!
I think I would find an semi uncrowded beachie elsewhere on that swell.
With all these guys in the water, I wonder if the freeway is less crowded?
Fun looking Spit. Like Dora said in the 60's when Asked how he deals with the crowds in the lineup at Malibu. "I Don't see anybody out there" Just Go.
🤣🤣🤣 just speed bumps
LOL, reminds me of that interview in Surfers 2
Joe Dirt And where's Tubesteak when you need him...(RIP)
I'm not used to seeing spit without nonstop dredging barrels. Big swell for sure
next swell i'm paddling my SUP cant wait looks so fun
My buddy from thousand oaks just got a sick skidoo. We plan to tow this place next significant swell.
Hah hah!
So did I miss the massive waves ??? To many kooks out to be massive.🌊🌊
This IS pretty massive for Sand Spit tbh. But the tide is too high
Clickbait 🎣
The problem is with the crowd is when sandspit starts to get big it means anything far North just gets too scary to surf so everyone comes to Santa Barbara.
This is slalom all the way!
This hurts my eyes to watch. Where's a shark when you need it 😂

I might live where it getting overhead is 20% of what we get, but feeling pretty fucken lucky I do when most days its acrowd of 3. 🤙
Zoorama. Just imagine the hassling. It would be the epitome of soul less surfing.
Great wave courtesy of Mother Nature .....surfers courtesy of overcrowded kalifornika....brutal
Wave courtesy of coastal engineers who built the breakwater.
Where do that many surfers even find parking?WTF!!
we all crawl out of the woodwork... LoL the SB harbor parking lot is pretty big.
Epic 🤙
Need to send in the snake catcher on that inside section 🐍
Looks like a good place to avoid lol. I wonder how the other SB spots were on this day...
LOOKS LIKE THE REAL LINE UP IS ON THE BEACH !!! THIS IS... CRA CRA
such a nice wave....
Longer and hollowed than
Rincon, (when it works)!
It usually barrels all the way through so the swell direction is not right. Still fun as hell.
Similar set up to snapper Rocks, not as fast but just as crowded
Cool awesome
When was this
There are a lot of good man made waves. I wish they could build more, replicate the way this wave works.
There's this spot and the SC harbor mouth, but where else are there "a lot of good man made waves"?
@@joeblow1942 A harbor in South Carolina?
Tom Curren at 24'23" :) with his #sw500orange fins
Yeeew!
Welcome to my nightmare....fun waves, too many hoomans.
that crowd is so fricken big though
Look at that pack!
When was
that inside section looks so fun. too bad its 100 surfers to 1 wave ratio
I get so frustrated with thick crowds like this....people's etiquette often goes out the window, and I'm Canadian/too polite to burn people
Andrew Hill don’t ever change 🇨🇦
point.... ?? what point is it ?
No crowd is worth that kind of wave
Dodge....rail to rail....Dodge n dodge.
Top wave althoug
good thing it isn't crowded
looks like a seal colony...
20 foot backwash doesn’t make head high waves massive.
well it takes a massive swell for that place to break
Massive crowd on a small wave.
Its a damn full parking lot
Looks like fun, but that crowd makes me sad.
massive swell?? drop by(or in) the Sandspit in Morro Bay...no crowd either
@24'23" Tom Curren
Hectic.
Wear a MASK!!!
So many kooks!
Ah so crowded
It seems surfing nowadays is about running over people and not giving a shit!
Soooo many other surfers! Ughhh. Hard to even ride a wave. It's just dodging people.
F' dat shit!
Waaaaay to crowded
That water looks disgusting
Run off with who knows what in the stew
It look a fat wave at high tide
Must have been wrong swell direction for that famous barrel to work. Totally not worth risking getting scalped by some kook for this day.
For those that are complaining on crowds...

Infested by humans :(
Or the tide is wrong.
Nope too cold, not wearing all that crap
Looks fun dodging ...and not surfing.
are these people lonely?
Wave’s not worth the crowd.
Not at all massive. Barely head high
a joke
