As a Landscape painter I am always on the lookout for new inspiration and environments. Something that has been on my mind for a long time is Ancient untouched forests.
I always want to paint a landscapes that do not have any sign of human intervention but as I paint from imagination and not from photos the problem has been that my impressions and memories are all from forests that have been used extensively over the millennia as have almost all forest (say over 99% here in Europe).
Now though we actually live in an area where there actually are exist of the last ancient forests in Europe, ancient untouched places where mountain pine forests still live. This because of some quite special ice age remnants that have made these areas all but unpassable for machines and horses alike.
So this summer I have spent a lot of time exploring these forests and also made the last theme of our online shop Ancient Forests, so everything that I have painted the last three months has this theme. In this video I take you along into one of these forests on a 10 hour hike deep into the Norwegian wilderness, exploring one of the last ancient forests in all of Europe.

Hi Joachim, Thank you for sharing this hike with us. I have never seen before trees over 500 years old with twisting bark, white moss, and wildflowers that flourish in the autumn. I am from the eastern U.S. where trees live only 50 years, we have only green moss, and flowers only grow in the spring and summer. Your ancient forest is a special place and I hope Norway protects it, so it is never destroyed.
Hi, I am so glad you enjoyed it ! Yes I really think these places are very special, thankfully these places I show in the video are all protected, I don’t think I would dare fall in love with them otherwise, there are so few places like them left.

I feel so happy in my soul to see this video! Your awe, your gratefulness and joy to be with these ancient trees that I felt through the screen! I live in Sweden and care much about old forests and try to save them from clearcutting (which is happening so much in Sweden now as you may know). It was very fascinating to walk with you through the landscape and the world of these ancient personalities. Also a very educating video if you want to learn about the difference between an old an young pine forest. Thank you so very much for taking us with you and creating this experience, together with the trees.
