First wild pitch I put two holes in my pro2+, very windy, first caught sharp end of peg near door, tear, second I was tensioning the pole and it slipped with wind... the z-flick poles...nipple bit down... straight through mesh and then out of top of the tent! I've done a repair on both with durston dcf patches, after intial clear dcf repairs. Can't see the pole hole at all now, door one is slightly noticeable dur to its location on a big panel, but impressed how well it repaired in the field and more so that it held up in strong winds and heavy heavy rain through that night.
Oh man that's crazy! And on your first trip! Glad to hear it's so repairable though. I haven't had any further rips or tears since that first night out and the DCF tape I happened to have with me has stayed well stuck on.
I've used it a few more times since and I find at worst the walls get damp. Most times there's nothing, and never any running or dripping condensation. If I'm forced to pitch on a slope I put something at the end of my pad so I don't slide down into the wall because that's when your footbox will get damp.
Nice Overnight! came for the tent , to see how it handles but the trip report on the condensation was a bonus for sure . Currently just upgraded from the duplex to the Altraplex cause of my height and wanted to save a few ounces since my duplex was over 5 years old. Great Video!
Great follow up to your other tent comparison video. Another win for the Durston! I'm waiting for them to restock!🤞So sorry about that piece of metal tearing the DCF. I could feel your pain!😢
Thanks! Yes my heart was torn as well as the tent 💔. But thankfully I had some DCF tape and I've had the tent out several times since and it's holding up fine.
Nice vid. CCF under air mattress also makes a HUGE difference in the noise with the nylon floor of the xmid pro. Those thermarest and that floor only is really squeaky without.
You mean to tell me you made a hole the first woodlands pitch! What a bummer. Reminds of my first surf on a new board in Costa Rica. I paddled out behind a beginner who ditched his board and smashed into mine. Oh well these things happen.
Yeah :( that piece of metal was totally invisible and I pitched the tent without any problem then came back later in the dark and felt something hard and heavy move under my feet and heard a little tearing sound. I was just glad I had DCF tape and I think it's patched ok but still... Sorry about your surfboard getting smashed up too.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I tried some cheap brands from Amazon but eventually found these www.thermoworks.com/thermodrop/ which only seem to be sold direct. They don't have Bluetooth functionality but I don't need that, battery lasts forever, waterproof, very accurate. Only downside is because they are accurate they respond very quickly to body temperature so you can't hold them in your hand while reading them.
Cool video. Waiting on my Xmid pro 1. I started in the no longer available zpacks solplex. Last year I moved to a DupleXL for my AT hike. I Turns out I like the smaller tents more even though I’m 6’ tall. The DupleXL is so nice, but doesn’t pack down enough for me. Hoping the Xmid pro 1 will be (almost) perfect compromise. Enough room for my height but packs down like my solplex did.
Thanks! I'm also 6' tall and the X-Mid Pro 1 is perfect for me. I don't need the extra space of a 2-person tent and like you said they are just extra bulk even if they aren't that much extra weight.
Love it! Just got the regular X-Mid 1 and I love it, but I am strongly considering swapping it for the pro version… I am 6’3” and my main concern is with it being a single wall tent, I am worried about rubbing up against the condensation on the inner wall, especially the footbox of my quilt. Not sure how tall you are, but have you had this problem or known anyone that has? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! I am exactly 6` but my son is 6`3" and lying flat he doesn't touch either end wall. If you're pitched on an incline at all then you'll slide down and your footbox will end up touching the wall (as it would with any tent), but because there is so little condensation in comparison to other single wall tents the footbox may get damp but not soaked I haven't yet been down below freezing in the X-Mid Pro 1 (and it won't get down that cold again until next winter now) but mid 30s beside a creek was a pretty good test and there was no condensation running down the walls. Hope that helps!
My local mechanic who I reasonably trust said "rod knock" and that the repairs would be the same cost as installing a new engine. No idea why all of a sudden. It only had 160k miles on it and I've kept up with the maintenance. Sadly I ended up selling it for parts because it wasn't worth the expense of a rebuild or new engine :(
Thanks for your video on the durston pro 1. Got one, and despite very dry exposed ridgeline conditions, I have never had so much condensation! Everywhere, especially on my quilt. I pinched it low but both vents open. Have you used much now? Have you had much further testing & can report how much condensation you are getting? I bought this to update my zpacks but now regretting it a little🙄...
Really? That's so weird. Yes, I've been out again since this video. I recently did a long weekend in the Rampart Range in Colorado. The nights were wet and chilly, perfect conditions for condensation, but my experience was still that there was way less condensation than my Altaplex, and my quilt was bone dry. I carry a small towel and I wiped the inside walls in the morning. The towel did get wet so there was condensation, but with my Altaplex in those conditions it would have been running down the walls and dripping onto me. That was not the case with the Durston. I pitched it pretty low because it was raining, and opened the peak vents, same as you.
Yes I am. I like it very much for rain protection. There's a couple of things I don't like but the pros outweigh the cons. Would you be interested if I did a video review of it?
@@ozoutdoors Yes, I have the Shakedry in an Arcteryx running jacket but Arcteryx stopped carrying the Gore Shakedry product. Also, when I checked Gore Wear online it seemed that they missed the sleeve length - too short - if you can comment. Thanks Rick
@@rickguthrie7662 I found I had to size up. Normally I wear Medium but I had to use a Large, not because of the sleeves but the torso. I'm only a 40 inch chest but Medium was snug even without a mid-layer underneath. Sleeves come down to my first thumb joint. I dislike the elastic on the sleeves as it's just wet and cold against the skin unless you've got gloves tucked underneath.
Looking forward to hearing more about how the X-Mid pro handles condensation, do you think the tent is engineered to allow condensation to run rather than drop, what happens if condensation droplets start to run down the interior?
I have the 2p Pro... the walls are steeper than duplexes and should allow for the moisture to run down away from the bathtub. I move around a lot and on non-level ground, my paranoia has my rain jacket over or around my quilt's toebox. Like if I slide down and hit the wall.
After a few months I've now had the tent out in a lot of rain and down to just above freezing which would have resulted in significant dripping and my quilt being soaked in my Altaplex. In the Durston the walls get damp but I never get running or dripping condensation. If I slide down at night so that my footbox touches the end wall it will get wet so if I'm forced to pitch on a slope I use my backpack to prevent that. That's no different from any other tent though, and overall still much much better moisture handling than any single wall tent I've used before.
@@ozoutdoors Okay great, thanks so much for reporting your findings, from what you've said I'd also be comfortable with managing the condensation you've described. My only other concern is hail damage, we get a lot of huge storms in Western Canada which often produce hail, would my Durston be in taters after such an event ??
@@DirtRiderLifeThe ones on the Skurka trip last year were duplex'es with shallower wall angles. But overall if you're expecting crazy hail, then DCF might not be the way to go in general.
@@DirtRiderLife that's a hard one to answer because I haven't had it out in a hail storm. Don't mean to cause a scare, but when you showed the thermometer, I saw a brown streak on your thumb. If this was not caused by trauma, you may want to have your provider or a dermatologist take a look at it, as it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

Cool hike, especially the ridge portions. What a drag about the tent rip (and the van), but you still made the most of it.
Yeah those things were real bummers but overall the hike was really enjoyable and I learn things every time I'm out
I got the X Mid Pro 2. I like the extra space. I am also glad for the pockets in the 2023 version. I do wish they had some canopy loops.
