    Finally, a harness racing comment section with absolutely no Karens to say this is abusive.

    Perhaps 20 years ago, Brandywine Raceway tried an experiment for the spring meet. They took away driving whips and replaced them w/ jockey's bats (this was before modified sulkies, you sat closer to the rump). Results? Percentage of winning and losing favorites showed no change, percentage of longshot winners was unchanged, average time per heat was unchanged. No difference. For the fall meet driving whips were back...not because the horsemen lobbied for them, but because the *fans* complained that the horses weren't being driven to their limit!
    The takeaway? Horsemen can't win, they're damned if they do & damned if they don't.!
    I started with trotters in 1969, so I've seen a lot. IMO, this horse was driven properly and wasn't abused in any way.

      I too am an old Brandywine guy. Miss it so much, Marv, trackmans kitchen, opening the windows. Roy Shudt announcing, later Gene Hart. Eating at the "Charcoal Pit" on 202. Dover with $800 purses, Harrington the same. Herve driving at Dover to pad his wins, Luc Oullette getting his ass kicked lol... Vern Crank getting hit- killed on 202 chasing his dog. I loved Brandywine

      I been in the business a very long time. There was no abuse of this horse. He raced strong coming First over from last.

      I wish it was easier to inform the public with the whip isn’t used abusively we get fined big money if that happens.
      Honestly here in Alberta we as horsemen own train and drive most of our own horses, most are like a family dog or cat. We care for them immensely. I have openly cried when my horse got hurt.

      Would have been hard because the horse already seemed pretty pumped up due to him popping the plugs. I think he drove good from that position.

    A whip is a safety device not just a prod. I would have been killed many times over without a whip racing County Fairs. A horse gets spooky and you touch them with the whip to pay attention to me and not from what there spooky with.

      @ChappellRacing  Рік тому

      I couldn’t have said it better myself, the whip has saved me and many of my friends from certain injuries and most importantly the horses. I will add since making major changes to whipping rules (less use of the whip) horses are going faster then ever before!

    Are those Thoroughbreds or American Standardbreds?

      Standardbreds

    • @kath5201
      @kath5201 2 роки тому +2

      Standardbreds are always used for trotting or pacing racing, pulling the Sulkys (carts) Thoroughbreds are used for saddle racing. No carts. Thats how I remember it.

      @@ChappellRacing When a horse is pulling and the grips are digging into my hands cutting of circulation, are they too far ahead or too far back. I can't figure it out. It was my first season learning to train and I didn't want to ask a question and find out I'm just out of shape.

    • @shanefaulkner8586

      @@Joe-ng9ny imo it at all depends on the horse. If you have a horse that' wants to go, cracking it with the whip isn't going to help much. I train one of the most honest race mares you can find she gives you 2.03 week in and week out. She's not the fastest but you don't have to ask her much to go.
