a good EPO regiment also really helps on the climbs

The Pirate proved cocaine can be as beneficial as EPO and his death from a heart attack showed it is better to inject performance enhancing drugs then snort them. Just ask Lance Armstrong, he might tell you.

Also, in crits, one trick I use is to pedal while sitting, at high cadence out of the corner, then as we're almost up to full speed on the long straight, stand and sprint past a good chunk of the pack.

The best advice for the local lad when climbing is to have patience. If you are not going to fly up the hill, settle in and ride up it. Find the comfortable gear and spin up the hill. Divide it into sections and ride up it. The difference between going up at the right pace, and going up to hard is always to the negative.

by pushing out your stomach it flattens the diaphragm which makes more 'space' in the thoracic cavity i.e. it "opens" up the lungs more. watch your stomach when your relaxed and you will be able to see the same thing, it allows for deeper breathing (more oxygen into the lungs). hope this help :)

Excellent video! These tips help a lot
I'm terrible at climbing, and I'm gonna be doing a charity ride soon that had a 3 or 4 mile hill with an average grade of about 6%. That's probably nothing for pro cyclists, but it's a bit of a challenge for someone with little to no climbing experience. I'll utilize all these tips when I do it. :)

@voodou6 When he says "push out your stomach" he's talking about breathing with your diaphragm, which is healthier and more natural than breathing with your chest. However, the large majority of people have been breathing with their chest for most of their lives, so it takes training and practice to use the diaphragm to its full potential.

2:50 That's true, heavier riders are not as well suited to standing. Firstly, we're taller (usually) so we have more leverage to bend the frame, the bars, and the tires and wheels laterally which wastes energy (similar to the effect of bouncing front suspension on an MTB when you stand). Particularly in race situations when the required power outputs are higher. I'm 6'4 (194cm) and 183 lb. (83 kg). I stand when I train but rarely in races.

This would have been in the 90's.
One of the riders is Marco Pantani, he is the bald rider in the pink jersey, in my opinion one of the best climbers ever. Sadly he died in 2004.

When you push out your stomach it your diaphragm is more effective and you can pull in more oxygen. Much needed on the climbs.

... if you stand you might need more Oxygen but you can also bring more energy on your pedals and musculary relax your "seat-Position" !!! Especially your light-weight-riders quite often also using a standing Position in an uphill is always a good choice - it s just a question of the right mix and the steepness

If Marco Pantani were still alive, I'd like to see him and Alberto Contador go at it on a climb.

Climbing is the most difficult part of riding. If you are heavy (or a sprinter) then you are never going to be good at it. You simply need to do your best. Start deep breathing earlier and work in short bursts. I use eight and twelve punches, followed by a second free-wheel. Look at the old riders like Gino Bartali. The skill is judging patterns so you can get to the top within your sets.

Match your breathing somewhat to your cadence. And pushing your stomach out as you inhale I guess would activate more of your core.

He may have been as mad as a hatter, and yes I know he overdosed on coke, and yes I know he doped........ The tour is well known for it, but all this aside, you cannot take away his natural talent which was merely enhanced by the drugs. The man was a natural. Amazing. A legend. Always.

Pantani was sadly doped to the gills, and died of a cocaine od in a out of season hotel room, where he'd barricaded himself in and dissassembled all the electrical appliances in the room.
A fortune in the bank nad crazy as the mad hatter. He was making racecars out of his poop.

Good old LeMond clunking away up the hill.. looked awful but geez, he was good...before STI shifting, a lot of pros rode with a much lower cadence, we all remember what downtube shifters were like, don't we...? ...anyone....damn, I'm not hat old..
