    I used to speak only English with my daughter when she was 3 months old, and when she started speaking, she would only speak in English. When she was 5, I enrolled her in daycare, and she had trouble communicating with her teachers and classmates. The teacher called me for a meeting and begged me to start talking to her only in Portuguese. I won't lie, that frustrated me a lot because I was really proud of that. She's now 7, and she did learn Portuguese, and now I speak to her in both languages. However, she mostly speaks only Portuguese, unless, of course, she wants something haha.

      Thanks for sharing. Yes, sometimes you do need to have a support from teachers and their readiness to help, not ask you to switch to Portuguese. Do you think you would choose differently now if you come back to that moment in life?

    If you are lucky enough to have a bilingual environment at home since childhood, you have a high percentage to be fluent in multiple languages. However, based on my experience, you can do it even in your adulthood, obtaining good results. I think as a single adult you are more consistent in your studies, learning a language might turn into a real passion to be proud of and of course, you are more exposed to travel and put into practice your linguistic repertoire even though I am a galaxy away to be considered exceptional at using the English language. "Never stop learning" is the mantra to repeat.

    I think that the best time to learn a second language is since I started to learn how to speak. A mean when they are little children. Thank so much for this strategics I am gonna apply with my brother cause he is now in the elementary school and his native language is Spanish. 😊

    We hadn't a true strategy with ou son but he is completly bilingue in french (we live in paris) and italian. We spent the first part of his life in Verona (north of italy). So we spoke and speak both languages during the day with our son. Tu summ up: we haven't a strategy but this "no-strategy" works pretty well. Our son speaks perfectly italian and french.

    I think that the best age for learning a second language is from the beginning of the school period, because the child is already learning to find and use new information, there is rivalry among classmates and I think this is the best time to learn a language. If one of the parents knows the necessary second language, then it's possible from an earlier age. Thank you for the video!

    Hey guys, this channel has lots of awesome content.
    I’m a Brazilian father of a 2y 5m boy in which I’ve been talking in English since my wife’s late pregnancy (silly or not, I did it).
    We decided to use the One Person One Language method with him. Nowadays, at least in my perception, he understands pretty much the same as other kids understand, but in Portuguese and English.
    Although his main language is Portuguese, every now and then he “drops” some words and phrases in English.
    It has been tremendously gratifying to me to talk with him, only in English, and he understands almost everything, whereas answering mostly in Portuguese.
    In my point of view, all that people say about delayed speech in every bilingual kid is a myth. It can happen, but in most cases, it will work.

    In my opinion the ideal age for someone to start learning a second language is from the 7th month. I have a 2 year old son myself and I’ve been applying the one parent one language method since he was 7 months old. I have also done some research on Stephen Krashen’s second language acquisition to complement the method.

    I think if you have the opportunity to arrange "exposure and immersion" for your child - then do it as early as possible. BUT it can be arranged only if you live in an English speaking country. So if you can't "immerse" I think the best age to start learning is 10 years old (it will be much faster than if you torture the child with English at 7 or 8).

    Hi, and thanks for your helpful content. I would like to ask a question here. I'm an English teacher based in Iran, and in our case, there are many families who would like to raise bilingual child but they're whether not fluent in English themselves or not confident enough to use it at home with their child. So, is it possible to raise a bilingual child without parents being involved and in a second, different, and specific environment? I mean, they would learn English pretty well, but is this experience still called bilingualism?

    • @RealLifeEnglish1
      @RealLifeEnglish1  Рік тому +1

      Sure, if let's say the child has continuous exposure to the second language out of home, that also counts. If a kid speaks 2 languages interchangeably, it doesn't matter if it were the parents who taught the second language to them or it came from another source - school, private teacher, English speaking groups. But this is something to start early on and keep it during a long period of time.

  • @Inkreadible
    @Inkreadible Рік тому +2

    I didn’t feel comfortable speaking English to my kid since this is my second language and now that she’s 5, it seems like it’s late. When I try to tell her instructions or whatever, she gets really frustrated that she won’t immediately understand. She’ll get mad and beg me to speak French instead. I think I should’ve started younger but I had a bad depression and I didn’t have the energy for it. I hope I can "make it right" now but that sounds complicated.

    • @RealLifeEnglish1
      @RealLifeEnglish1  Рік тому +3

      Take baby steps, and maybe make your instructions really simple and as obvious as possible (like in Casse's example when you show something to a kid and name it or name an action). 5 years isn't too old. Just be patient with your kid. You definitely don't wanna make her hate English, right? So maybe use it during play time?

    • @Inkreadible
      @Inkreadible Рік тому +2

      @@RealLifeEnglish1 Yes exactly, as soon as she gets frustrated I switch back to French of course and I never get angry with her for that reason. She’s starting to write and really wants to learn so sometimes I spell everyday life words in English, like one English word for 4 French words if that makes sense. I often use English to congratulate her too. 🤣

    My boy is 2. Time and place is really good because he knows to expect Hindi at snack time, at our friend's house, when we do sensory play, and when we are with others.
    He will actually get mad and cry if I randomly read another language. The same book he will cry but at snack time he asked me to read it 4 times.
    Time and place also prepares the brain. It's not so much about kids understanding the why, but maybe about the brain thing in that language
    I'm not strong enough to do my non native languages all the time (at home or out). I don't expect fluency but at 2 he is having small conversations with our Indian friends and he will do bilingual things with mixing ASL and spoken English. We sporadically do sign as I'm better at it.

    This is a difficult topic for me. As a mom of 3 children I can say that it depends on the child. My son can easily switch to one of the three languages he speaks, but my oldest daughter can't do it easily, she even refuses to speak our native languages at home (since we live in an English speaking country and she goes to school here). My youngest daughter, as mentioned in this podcast, has some speech problems due to multilingualism, and she mixes words from different languages. As parents, we try to keep our native languages, but it's so hard, even though we speak it at home every day
