I was at the Hermitage recently and I felt that the main instrument in the Russian Monarchy was the Harp. I think Courtiers used the Harp to tune their voices. In fact, I think it may have been the Harp that was used to tune the orchestra's for a very long time. It makes sense because it is at the crossroads in the lumbering of trees. For example, it is the crux of the fork of the tree. So they would have erred on the side of naturalism and opted for the Harp when tuning other instruments. The Piano is relatively recent and relied on the development of fine metal strings that can only occur after the invention of pin moulds by Adam Smith in the early 18th Century. No extrusion machines back in those days. Here's a video where I describe a visit to the Hermitage and perform a tune titled, 'The Measure of Kindness' (2023) in the Gold Room of the Hermitage.
