Wait just one minute. That play in the OSU-Rutgers game was a fake punt with Ohio State leading by 39? I only played through HS, but my coach would be supremely pissed if one of us did not hammer that runner when he ran out of bounds. Back in those days this was not "old school", it was how the game was played. When I was a HS senior we were playing a team whose head coach was a teacher and JV coach the previous year at our school. This guy played pro ball with the 49ers in the very early days of their existence. Back then, HE was old school and had the most funny stories about his time in the NFL. Anyhow, in the game in question we blew out his team 69-0. By the middle of the 3rd quarter our coach had pulled our starters and our second teams still ran amok. In the fourth quarter we kicked off after another touchdown and our kicker's plant foot lost it's grip on the grass just as he kicked the ball and it created the most perfect onside kick in history. We recovered the ball and scored again. After the game, our head coach, to his everlasting credit, made our kicker break protocol and take off his helmet for the post game handshake. He then made him explain and apologize to Coach Lee for the "onside kick". Coach Lee KNEW that our head coach would have never ordered the onside kick and he waited for the apology that he knew would be forthcoming. Today? There is a sad lacking of respect for the game and it's traditions.
