I've never been to Berlin, but the Brandenburg Gate is my image of the city. I think it's a fabulous monument and very happy that it wasn't destroyed in the war.

One of my favourite human traits is forgiveness. I can say with all my heart I forgive Germany, not the SS or Hitler, but the *German people* who had no choice. My great grandfather was a German POW captured by the British and lived the rest of hus oife happily in England. He loved it here even more than back home, and be raised my Grandma here. I'm german. My grandfather was POW in England, in Brighton i think. He showed me pictures from the harbour and with the english girl he dated. Some irish fanatics wanted to recruit him and his comrades and after that they were send to the USA.
Spent my 30th birthday in the gorgeous dingy smoke hole hidden away in the graffiti alley..really friendly staff. They overheard my wife saying it was my birthday when the clock stuck midnight and they gave us a free round. Always enjoy visits to Berlin.
You go to Germany and drink mostly Czech and Irish beer. Lots of great beers in Germany. Be adventurous. Berliner kindl is good and cheap. I lived in berlin and know the best places.

Worked in munich,then went to east Germany near dresden .was like going into a time warp ..from auto barn moterways to cobble streets and run down houses stayed in an old hotel,apparently stalin stayed there many years ago.east germany has had millions spent on it.the joke was in them days if we had lost the war at least we would be drinking decent beer now.had some mad sessions over there .love to come back with the wife.

I live half a year at a time in Germany and drink all over it . Berlin is not good . Get to Dusseldorf,cologne , Hamburg but I love Munich . For anyone wondering I am in Nuremberg. Stunning city with great beers also .can't beat Franconian and Bavarian beers .
Check you out on the Vinorhandsky. Lovely stuff. I love German, I can fully recommend Munich. Just got back from Gdansk (Poland). Poland is one of the few places that you will find that is nicely cheaper than the UK. Good beer too.

Was in Berlin like 10 years ago i was speaking to some Italian girls and they were getting a flat to rent and was €450 a month for 2 bed quite central to the city like zone 2/3 etc .... probs gone up since but most germans rent and dont buy there homes ...

In Bavaria you ger mostly ales In dortmund different ales again then you find Hellas and pils in different areas.

Many of the craft or smaller brewers in the UK are turning out very acceptable lagers, hellas, & pils The ale scene in the UK is good obviously, but even that is becoming somewhat disappointing in like the lagers you see the ABV dropping to levels that affect flavour adversely & when you factor-in the ever increasing prices to me it`s an unacceptable way the industry going. The UK has the ability to produce great lager but chooses not to, thats why I buy German, Czech, & Belgian instead.

I'm in Australia now and the beers here are very expensive due to high tax, so the breweries are dropping the abv to keep the cost to the consumer down. They don't make proper lager here really it's either ale or pseudo lagers using lager yeast but short time brewed.
@honestplaces I'm from Manchester and have lived in Berlin for nearly 10 years. I lived in northern Germany when I was in the Army and also lived there as a child when my dad was in the RAF. So I have a bit more experience of Germany than just Berlin. Trains are usually on time around Berlin, like all capital cities, it has good public transport. Although The train network has become less reliable in the last few years. If you go into the towns and cities in former East Germany, you might not find them appealing. Slightly sketchy is lots of places.

German cities also don't sell separate tickets for bus and rail. Even a single is usually valid on everything in the city for 90 minutes, while in most of the UK, it's only valid on the first bus you board. To use all local and regional bus and rail in Germany costs €49/month. I don't think you can even get a monthly ticket for all local and regional bus and rail in the UK.

Love Germany although the trains can be a nightmare in Germany too. Went to Berlin in 2022 by Eurostar via Brussels and had issues with the ICE on the way out and back. Berlin is definitely a lot more grittier and edgy than some other German cities but bloody great fun though, especially Kreuzburg.

With the Deutschlandticket (subscription 49€ per month) you can travel throughout Germany, except for express trains.

German cities also don't sell separate tickets for bus and rail. Even a single is usually valid on everything in the city for 90 minutes, while in most of the UK, it's only valid on the first bus you board. To use all local and regional bus and rail in Germany costs €49/month. I don't think you can even get a monthly ticket for all local and regional bus and rail in the UK.

Went to Berlin in 2022 by Eurostar via Brussels and had issues with the ICE on the way out and back.
Berlin is definitely a lot more grittier and edgy than some other German cities but bloody great fun though, especially Kreuzburg.
