I'm a British student currently studying in the US, and I fake an American accent SO MUCH. It's just easier to get through a brief interaction with no 'do I hear a British accent??!?' reactions.

One of my coworkers is from London but moved to the US with her mom when she was 14, she's in her late 20s now and sounds just like me. My friend's wife is from Kent and she's been here for like 6 or 7 years, but she sounds hardcore British and can't fake an American accent worth a damn hahaha

For over 30 years, I've always voted by mail, in WA state. Can't imagine how inconvenient going out to vote must be!

It depends where you live. I turned 30 in 2019, and before that I always voted in person. I live in a small town so no long lines but I can't imagine waiting in line for hours to cast a ballot.
I'm in the UK and vote by mail .our elections are held on Thursdays. I go to the pub on Thursdays

If it's organised in such a way that there are lots of polling places, distributed evenly to be close to where voters live, it's not very inconvenient.
But that's where election day means we have to vote for one person, or one group. In USA so many jobs are elected positions that you always seem to be voting for at least 27 races all at once, so of course it takes time, and it creates lines.
When show hosts are the guests of another show then you know its's always going to be a blast

I love the idea that there are people in America who met John Oliver out in the wild but did not notice because he spoke like slowed down John Wayne.

As an Australian who lived in the Midwest for a year, I found myself doing the same thing - especially when giving my name, which has an 'R' in it which we don't pronounce (i.e 'non-rhotic'). Spelling it didn't help, because when I said 'R' as 'ah', they asked '...eye???' They thought I was a Southerner.

I love Colbert as a British citizen and respect his views on what's happening in my country politically as well as his own over the pond. I really consider John Oliver a national treasure and consider a better UK rep then Corden was
I love how excited John got at the though of Liz Truss actually killing the queen.
The tried to pin the death of the Queen Mother on me when she kicked off. All I did was come home, turn the TV on, and they accused me, "If you've just turned your TV on, the Queen Mother has died."
Took me years to clean up the legal mess that left.

And I'm glad we were voting early so nothing can keep us from voting on election day & it'll be a bit easier for those voting today.

British people doing an American accent always crack me up. It never sounds exactly like how someone here sounds but more like something from a very old movie. Kind of like a vampire using cowboy films to pass as human.
Hugh Laurie has an amazing American accent. I had no idea he was British.
Oh yeah he was amazing, I was thinking more of like the Monty Python big corporation skit in "Meaning of Life", which doesn't quite sound American but is a spot-on satire of how I imagine we look to other countries...

@@Hair8Metal8Karen There's a hilarious clip somewhere on UA-cam of 2 real-life British MPs talking in Westminster. One is originally from NZ, and the other is Scottish. Even after the Scot had repeated himself thrice, the Kiwi didn't have the foggiest idea what he had said. Someone had to translate, and the Scot seemed mystified as to why.

I think John Oliver's accent has already shifted to a much more subtle British Accent after many years of living in the States. I didn't even really notice his accent when listening to his shows in Canada. But now that I'm in the UK, I've realized how difficult it can be to understand some people's British accents.
