#Chaliyam, a small hamlet in #Kozhikode, Kerala, has a centuries-old connection with the Arabian peninsula. Traders used to come to buy the ships that were built here. Hundreds of years later, Chaliyum has carefully preserved the secret of this shipbuilding tradition. And, at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the world will once again witness this fine
craftsmanship.

The current boat craftsmen at Chaliyam may not be aware of it, but the craft of building a nail-less boat is likely to be more than 4000-year-old tradition.
We must remember that Indian spices and cotton cloth was found even with the mummies of Egypt - indicating that the Indian Ocean trade was active even 4,000 years ago, obviously using such boats.
While some boats were built on Indian shores, some were built as far away as Red Sea shores - using Indian wood and most likely the coconut fibre from India.
Such boats were distinctly different from the boats of the Mediterranean Sea which were built using nails.
These nail-less boats plying the Indian Ocean had a distinct advantage: if they hit a rock, they still remained in one piece, and thus offering a much greater chance of survival for the seamen.
