The Hydromatic transmission (back-in-the day) was a 4-speed. It doesn't stay in 1st very long! Also note that if the car is in 'S' (Super), the transmission shift pattern is 1,2,3. If you're in 'D' (Drive) and floor the accelorator the car shifts back to 'S' (Super). I've owned two Oldsmobiles in my lifetime - a '54 and a '59. Awesome cars!
I think senior would be happy to see it back on the road, hopefully in the hands of a good caretaker. Premium gas and fuel stabilizer every time. Cheap way to preserve the entire fuel system.
I’m seeing this 9 months after the repairs, but that Olds 98 is awesome! 324 4bbl 240 horse and a “Jetaway Hydramatic” which is a 4 speed. S for passing, Lo for steep grades. 98’s were loaded with options. Always nice cars back in the day!
That's a beautiful car. Love the cowl spotlights. And the dash looks spectacular. Power windows too!! An incredible old cruiser. Be safe and stay well.
The "S" on the the shift indicator stands for "SUPER"...and I'm not kidding. Saw it in an Oldsmobile owners manual quite a few years back.
@gordonborsboom7460 interesting!

I remember seeing fifties Oldsmobiles parked outside of Softies. I think it was red and white though. He must have had others as well?

Compression must have improved with a couple of heat cycles loosening up the rings. Cool car.

I was born in 1956 like that car. Had all kinds of cars in 67 years. And motorcycles. Wish I was as healthy as that car seems. lol

Low super drive that's what it means
Such a cool car, nothing like a 50s car. Brakes are for quitters
