One of those films that I know I've watched, but can't remember anything from, other than a massive Ferris wheel coming off its foundation and rolling over the city at the end.

It's honestly one of the most baffling films I've ever watched. Completely incoherent but somehow still has a charm of sorts. And yes, the Ferris Wheel rolls off down the pier and into the ocean at the end of the film.

Mostly a lot of screaming, which was the primary focus of the trailer.

The biggest problem with 1941 is that there are no likable or relatable characters. Everybody is some combination of obnoxious, annoying, amoral, psychotic, insane, stupid, and generally lacking in humanity. Near the end of the movie I wanted everybody to simply die. The most redeeming quality of the movie is the camera direction and staging. It is a visually brilliant movie, which could probably be more greatly appreciated with the sound turned off - except during the USO dance/fight scene.

You said it perfectly. It's such a frustrating film cause you can see the potential for a classic action-comedy but it just misses all the marks. You can really see after this why Spielberg pretty much steered clear from comedies for the rest of his career. Pure comedy is not in his DNA.

@@kiksta Not entirely...the Indiana Jones series is full of comedy. Its that those movies were expertly written and they cared enough about the narrative to set everything up properly for the jokes. Temple of Doom strayed slightly into 1941 territory, and got a bit crazy, but he expertly redeemed himself with Last Crusade.

@@aliensoup2420 Yes, I was gonna say, he's masterful at integrating light-hearted humour into his action/adventure films, but in terms of pursuing comedy as the main genre, he never attempted again. And I think for good reason.
As much humour as the indy films and others have, they were never burst out loud laughing type of funny.
I think for making comedies, the director needs to be able to let their hair down a little, in order to let the film breathe and generate the laughs authentically.
Where as i think Spielberg is so technically gifted and meticulous behind the camera, that i don't think he'd ever loosen his leash enough to let pure comedy flow.
      i hope that makes sense...
